You're not giving me (as a non watcher) much here. Is it a draining match or is it a pull the trigger fest?

Something in between. Good attacking tennis from both. Could be draining for Fed's backhand if it goes to 5th.

Sorry!
Federer is playing better but so is Tsonga in that 4 set. Tsonga's FH he improving but so is Federer's timing. Now the question is can they keep it up. Great shots from both...which was not tyhe case in the first 3 sets.

For either winner this will be a physically taxing match.

Tsonga makes 3 UEs and gives the break back to Roger. ...but a lot of Tsonga shots which allowed to break Fed in the first place where close and those UEs were bound to happen. Fed starting to looks tired though.

What a break back game from Tsonga!
Rasheed has really improved his fitness. No sign of any fatigue. Or is it the adrenaline carrying him?

Yes well played from Tsonga. I want him to win now as I know Fed is a spent force for the rest of the week. Tsonga can at least recover quicker.

Fed wants this one badly!
I think whoever wins this one will beat Murray.

Wilander and his partner saying it's a better quality tennis than the Wawrinka/Djoko match....less drama but better shot quality. It's unfair on Stan as he was the only trying to pull shots.

Fed is hanging on Tsonga ropes. Jo has by 15 more winners and more total won balls than Fed at the beginning of the 5th set.. Whatever happens Jo is better player on this till 4th set. Jo, come on!

It's great match. Great shots but Tsonga has dropped a few nothches and shoudl have lost it 61 if Fed had not messed it up.
But what I noticed is that Fed moved better in the last 2 sets (despite losing the 4th) than in the first 3...and his timing seriously improved.

OH he was all over Tsonga in the 5th set in his full-on froward tennis he played against Murray in the 4th set at Wimbers.gallery play wrote:noleisthebest wrote:Federer is such a predator. I've never seen anything like it!

Had tons of time on ground strokes and pounced forward with the old-flame aggression non-stop.
Even his backhand was pacier than in the most of rest of the match!

HIs mouvement and timing improved as the game went on...as expected. This is what he said after Rao's match as well. Something like "after the 2nd set I knew I woudl play better".

I must say, the change was really strange. Why do you think it happened like that? Is it tactical or stg else?

Re: Australian Open 2013: Matches of the day : Day 10 23-Jan-2013
You do not notice the change in his mouvement (and you prefer to call that excuses) but it is clear he is moving more freely and times the ball better as he gets tired and loosens up. Unfortuantely he also gets tired and that is why it was important for him to break Tsonga as many times in the 5th. He is walking a thin line where he needs to win the first 2 sets despite being stiff and then loosens up and is ok for 3rd and 4th. But clearly at Wimbledon 10 and FO12 the back started to play up after the first sets...It;s something quite difficult to predict.
But he knows he cannot play too much nowadays and thsi is why not only he cut his schedule significantly but also chose to play on the fastest surfaces on th etour.
Q. Do you have any sense of why it's not that much on the women's side?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: You know, the girls, they are more unstable emotionally than us. I'm sure everybody will say it's true, even the girls (laughter). No? No, you don't think?
But, I mean, it's just about hormones and all this stuff. We don't have all these bad things, so we are physically in a good shape every time, and you are not. That's it.
Did you manage to watch it? It certainly was a very good match. Tsonga doesn't move that well but his shots are really powerful and his volleys excellent. It was certainly an improved version from previous years.
Good luck with your exams.

Re: Australian Open 2013: Matches of the day : Day 10 23-Jan-2013
Quite interesting stats from teh Fed / Match
http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/stats/day15/1504ms.html
Tsonga has 66 winners Fed 49. But as they count aces as winners (and even sometimes unreturned serves), they are pretty equal in teh winners department when not considering aces. But of course Federer has les UEs.
One interesting stat is the pace of teh second serve. Fed consistently beats tsonga on second serve speed despite Tsonga hitting faster the first serve.
Another half surprising stat is Fed volleying more than Tsonga and yet has a better winning ratio. However as pointed by GP Tsonga (not particularly known for his big point game) has won more BP conversions (5/9) despite having Fed's half number of BPs (4/18!!!).
This match was quite fun to watch but difficult to draw much conclusion besides what Fed says: "could have won in 3 or 4 but could have lost in 5 too".
