I don't play but just noting my pick for title:

1. Zverev.  Imho he's favourite.  Fed's draw is loaded and I don't think Nadal has been spectacular on hard court for a long time.

2. Kyrgios. His draw is loaded, but there is reason for optimism. He's looking deadly.

3. Cilic.  He's been there and done it, and if he can perform like at Wimbledon, he has a great chance.

4. Dimitrov.  For me 4th favourite.  He's showing great form.

Basically the number beside the player means what seed they are for the tournament. 
If you are not a seed, you get 33 for the time being. 
The odds go up later in the tournament and you are rewarded for going for the underdog!

Commentators on sky saying Federer looked bad in practice, not using his back properly at all.

Always possible he's having to take a very careful approach to warming. We will see.

It's almost Federer o'clock.

1st game, Federer looked awful. I think he might be crocked you know. He's standing up tall in the backhand.

Yeah, Fed looking really poor.  Barely hitting some of the BHs.  Let's see how it goes.

Still down a break, but seems to be playing at a little more respectable level now.

Tiafoe will be serving for the set.  He is not even playing that great.  He is ok but no more than that.

Tiafoe takes the first set.  Fed looking very poor.  This is two weeks after Montreal.  If he has not gotten better since then, how likely is he to improve during the USO, even if he were to still win today.

I see Fed just took the second set.  I missed most of it, so don't know if he is getting better or Tiafoe is playing poorly. Hopefully Fed survives today.  I want him to at least reach Rd3 so I can see him Saturday  (unless he plays Saturday night, but hopefully he would get the day slot).

Fed much better now. Hitting over his BH far more, including a couple of impressive BH returns.

Tsonga vs Shapovalov the night match tomorrow. That could be good.

Cracking match this. Tiafoe coming up with some stunning shots to get the break back when Fed serving for it. 

Fed will still win but Tiafoe can really play.

Yep, shame for Tiafoe. Very poor final game and Fed edges through. Hopefully Tiafoe can really build on this - one of the most exciting youngsters.

It is a win. But five sets in the first round vs Tiafoe is not too encouraging. At least the match was quite quick for a five setter. It was shorter than Zverev's straight set win.

Fed will need to play much much better if he wants to go deep.

I am not holding my breath.

If he is not hurt too much the second round should be no more difficult than the first one. But sure I can't see him go much further.

I am looking back to Wimbledon 2012 and hoping it eases. I couldn't stay up but I imagine his standard must  have lifted after the beginning.

Didn't see any matches, but glad all the talented players are through: Pouille, Shap, Chung...

Credit to his lion's heart for not cancelling the tournament and playing with such hinderance.
