Re: Australian Open - 2020
Funny thing is Djokovic did nothing there... didn't even have good length. Thiem is just combusting.

In fairness, Djok cheated at the end of game 3 and was allowed to do it.

Nole was nervous in the last service game and Thiem unable to take advantage.

You missed the part Tenez where Djok went out for a dodgy break and was getting totally outplayed. When you made your spazzy comment, Theim was 2-1 up and outplaying Djok.
===
Yes I missed that part but Thiem is tired and Djoko is much less. And once again the fitter will win. A simple reality.

Thiem hanging by fingernails. I thought he was going to get broken again.
But it is all Nole now.

He will have a shot but I seriously doubt it. Your man will most likely equal Fed but will struggle to go one better.

Almost there. Just needs one of the next two games. Cannot see Thiem taking it from him, Nole would have to gift it to him.

Theim staying on Gen Worthless. Djok won't pass Fed's slams. And also Djok had a time out at end of 3rd that never should have been allowed. Theim was the better player.

Frustrating viewing. Thiem blew that. Djokovic totally gone by the 3rd set and Thiem let him back in. You can’t do that and expect to win.

Oh well. Well done Nole. #17 and counting. Congrats.
Thiem looked in good shape for a moment or two, but it was not to be.
What is it now? The last 8 slams shared between Rafa and Nole?

I don't think Nole was even that great today. Rafa or fully fit Fed could have both won. Thiem should have won, but choked so badly.

Re: Australian Open - 2020
Djokovic probably should have won in straights but bizarrely totally lost focus and confidence midway through the second. Pulled it back together towards the end of the third and was only going to be one winner after that.

Djokovic went on walkabout and lost the plot with those code violations, which I am sure many would’ve alluded to had Thiem won in 4. Djokovic did enough to get the job done. Even if his form wasn’t totally spectacular, it shows how badly Thiem waned in that match towards the end.

I'm not. You've got to be better than the old champs to lift big trophies. Poor lad is painfully 1d. No wonder Nole, Rafa and Fed are sill rocking and rolling. They are simply better. Infinitelly better atm.AceofDeath wrote:Sad for Thiem

What? You want me to deny what you and I have been saying for the last 12 years just because you suddenly reminded yourself you were Serb like Djoko? If Djoko was that good he d win in 3 or 4 sets. The fact he has the best 5set records shows how is fitness is so much better than everyone else... But unfortunately this is not what you want to see.

Re: Australian Open - 2020
Thiem was tired and unlucky to have to play Nadal and Zverev and have a day less rest. It made the difference again like it did in the FO.
He played poorly today still got into the match. I expect him to win the French.... With a bit more luck.

That's a sweeping and patronising statement. Not sure really what else to say to it.Tenez wrote:

wow...I suppose you've won a few brownie points there with a few posters. I could say it's funny, but it's not.Tenez wrote:This is a tennis forum made of a few knowledgeable posters whose sole interest is tennis and don't care much about the players' nationality.
And finally a comment about tennis from you.Tenez wrote:

Much to your malaise, Djoko IS that good. Which is why he beat Thiem today. Federer couldn't in their last three matches. And neither could Nadal in the semis. Since the beginning of the year, Nole has beaten Nadal, Federer, Thiem and Medvedev.
He is the best and he doesn't need to beat players in 3 or 4 sets to prove himself to you. If he beat Thiem in 3 sets today you would have probably found something else to dig at.
Imagine me saying if Federer was that good, he should have beaten Nadal in three sets in OZ 2017...or in Wimbledon 2007 etc etc...
The way I saw today's match - Thiem was 1D, kept bashing the ball with zero finesse, even at the net. It may work on clay and that's about it. Unlike Nadal, Nole is not a machine and he traditionally has a focus dip and gives sets away. He is playful.
There were one or two moments where he could have pulled the trigger and made his life easier but didn't...and it's not the end of the world.
He played some great tennis and shots and I enjoyed myself a lot.
As for the 5 set record, "your man" Federer could have easily won one last Wimbledon but didn't. 40:15, two match points squandered...are you going to blame Djokovic for that, too?
Anyway...I am glad Thiem lost because he simply isn't good enough to win on hard courts with his sweaty robotic tennis. I hope he is in Nadal's half in RG, but fat chance of that happening.

Agree with nitb. What is there to be sad about? He just was not good enough. Someone has to win, someone has to lose, and in the end Thiem was unable to match Nole.noleisthebest wrote:I'm not.AceofDeath wrote:Sad for Thiem […]

Re: Australian Open - 2020
As I mentioned earlier today, Stan is the only player who beat Rafa and Nole in the same slam (AO14). Thiem had a chance today but failed. I also checked who and when managed to beat any other combination of the Big 3 in the same slam.
First, nobody ever beat all three of them. There were nine occasions when someone beat two of them:
3x - Nadal: he beat Nole and Fed in each of RG 06/07/08 (even though, especially RG 06 was before Nole was part of any "Big 3")
2x - Wawrinka: in addition to AO14, he beat Fed/Nole in RG15
1x:
Del Potro: USO09 (Nadal/Fed)
Berdych: W10 (Fed/Nole - then lost to Rafa in the final)
Djokovic: USO11 he beat both Fed and Rafa
Technically, Safin beat both Nole and Fed at AO05, but that was well before Nole was in Big 3 - in fact it was Nole's very first slam appearance.
From among all these occasions, Berdych at W10 is the only one who did not win the title.
Federer never managed to beat both Nole and Rafa in the same slam. He came very close last year, but choked just before the finish line.

Good analysis.
Beating Djoko should only count starting 2011. Before that he was not in Fed/Nadal 's level at Slams.
But beating Fed after 2015 shouldn't even count as much coz he has slowly moved into the twilight of his career.

Australian Open organizers are planning to allow 50 percent of the seats to be filled by fans. This is subject to government clearance. They also plan on introducing relaxations on a lot of the quarantine restrictions the players had in Paris and New York.
