For some reasons Miami has often been less interesting.Lets see how the new courts plays.

It somehow escaped my attention that Miami has moved to a different venue this year. Main stadium is set up inside a football stadium. Odd.

Fed's returning in his last 2 matches (Thiem's and now Albot's) have been terrible. He simply can't be bothered running.

The grace has deserted federer in the last week or so. He was not playing that bad early IW.

I was obviously joking about Cilic.Tenez wrote:yeah. It can suddenly get to you.summerblues wrote:Old age?Tenez wrote:What happened to Cilic?
But, in all seriousness, I would say it depends on what you count as "old age". I would include under old age not just the gradual decline, but also some of the injuries. Players are more injury-prone as they get older - either due to general wear-and-tear, or just because they are older.
My back went one day - I was lifting some stuff just like I would millions of times - and pop it went. I suspect it would have been much less likely to happen when I was 10 years younger. Is what happened to me "old age" or not? I would say at least partly so.
So I would say yes, it is possible for old age to suddenly get to you.

This is one of the worst sets of tennis that Federer managed to win.

Yes we saw that for instance with Federer in 2013 (back injury) and Djoko 2 years ago (elbow)...and then afterwards they played as well as ever.
Sure more prone to injury but outside those injury period some progression/improvement can happen.
One thing for sure is Federer is declining fast!

In 2017 and more so in 2018 Federer had moments within a match where he could play nearly as bad as today but those were rather sporadic whereas nowadays he plays crap non stop.

But you guys have all been doom-and-gloom after his match vs Thiem. I do not see it that way. I thought his game vs Thiem was at least as good - or better - than vs Millman at the USO or vs Tsitsipas in Australia. Nowhere near as good as in 2017, but certainly no decline - maybe even slight improvement - over the last 6+ months.

Really? We clearly see things differently. One thing obvious in the last 7 days is that he simply can;t return or rather does not wish to be involved in a rally. he is going to concentrate one game for a break and then the rest is simply hit and hope, often snatching his shots, no bending of the knees, etc...I simply do not recognise the player I have watched for 19 years.
Did not see the Millman match but yes he must have been awful. However he has been up and down within a match quite a bit in particular (Final AO 18 and Wimby 18 v Anderson).

Re: Miami Open - 2019
My main worry is that Fed just does not seem to have the pop in his shots anymore. All these guys - Millman, Tsitsipas etc can stay with him in the rallies and in some cases they out-rally him.
It is sort of like back in 2013-15, when guys like Robredo were all of a sudden able to rally with him. In 2015, he "solved" it by playing super-aggressive (like say in 2015 USO final). That was quite watchable, but not quite good enough.
Then in 2017 he was all of a sudden (new racquet?) able to do damage from the baseline again, which made the world of difference. He could stay at the baseline more and pick his spots for attack - and in general he just had plenty of options and less pressure on his shots.
But now his baseline game has declined again. Injury? Old age? I don't know, but if it is terminal, he will have hard time winning big titles. Not impossible - if draw opens up for him, he can still do it even with his present form and that is why I think he should definitely play on. But it will be difficult.

Re: Miami Open - 2019
I am being reminded of what Tenez once said about Ferrer - something to the effect that he did not mind Ferrer's game because even though he did not have the firepower to really hurt his opponents, at least he was trying to hurt them as best he could.
It is rather embarrassing that Zverev allows Ferrer to dictate all the points, given the difference between the amount of firepower they possess.

Re: Miami Open - 2019
Ha Ha Ha. Ferrer wins.
And it was well deserved too. It was not a couple of lucky bounces that decided it - he was far and away the better player from when I started watching (midway through the 2nd set).
For Zverev's sake, I am hoping he either has some illness (there was talk of some flu or sth last week?) or he is carrying an injury. His performance was pathetic - if he is playing like this when in perfect health, he will be dropping plenty of points soon.

Pathetic. I have more hope for Shap and Thiem and esp Tsit than I do Zverev. He's going the Raonic route.

Glad Ferrer won, and what a win over that git who last week said I have made enough success in Tennis to be remembered in tennis history, wihout ever being into a GS SF, moron.
Kyrgios doing some good play, even managed to kick a dumb fan out of the match haahaha, nice.

That's true. His BH in particular has lost power but more importantly consistency. I really suspect the reason is his body feeling it.
After a 3 or 4 match run he probably needs 3 weeks or more to recover.

Fed needs an oversized racket now, a 115 inch one, some easy power, most shots just can't penetrate anymore!!

Krajinovic's shots are flying through the court.
He is making Fed run and look slow.

26 shots rallies....says it all. It's dead slow..and yes Fed can't hit through but frankly neither can Kraji.

Federer is not exactly pulling the trigger, is he...hence the long rally.Tenez wrote:noleisthebest wrote:I don't think so.Tenez wrote:The conds look pretty slow. Miami has not learnt its lesson.

This is not Sapras era. There is a lot more skill from the baseline.

Re: Miami Open - 2019
No he is not pulling the trigger cause he can't anymore and the court is slow. Very slow in fact. Kraji is not hitting hard either.
The rallies a much longer than in IW, it's pretty obvious.
Fed doesn;t even make UEs on returns so slow are the conds.

Dimi continues to be the disappointment of the decade, just so that he reminds us that he sucks, I swear Sharapova ruined his career for good for those months that he got abused by that drugged cow...
Andrescu gives up, tank empty from IW, but she is my fav girl for now, super power shots, slices, drop shots, she has the lot, not scared at all beating the shit out of Kerber twice in 5 days.
I have blacklisted Naomi Osaka, she is a rude uneducated can't even greet opponents properly full of shitty excuses GS winner, I thought she would have some Japanase humbleness and respect, she has 0, maybe Haiti genes killed all Japanese genes??? maybe No1 has confused her, but I don't care for her anymore, maybe in a couple of years she matures a little.

I like both Rub and Shapo's games even though they are very different. Shapo however gets on my nerve with his mojo sitting next to his mum. I keep saying but frankly it is so ridiculous.
