Who Is Going To Win Australian Open?
Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Well...first slam of the year starts in a few days, draw ceremony is on Friday.
There will be no "Rusty" Hewitt but everyone else will...including Federer and Nadal who had a long break.
We have seen most players last week.
What can we conclude?
That we are most likely to see the same final as last year.
Still, nothing is set in stone and many things can happen in two weeks.
I hope Federer gets a kind draw as I am not sure if he will make 16 seeds.
I can't say I am excited about this AO, but let's at least hope we have some good matches.
A few week one upsets would be a great start.
Here is the Draw:

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Just not Raonic, pleeaaaase!
He is basically a Serb, but I can't stand him as a player. Just those enormous legs like a crane, big square top lip, desperate face, tongue stuck out...robotic tennis and shots drilled zilion times...
He looks as weird as Peter Crouch running on a football pitch.
Last Wimbledin's final - Raonic-Murray was such a bad matchup for me I went straight to club to play.
Zverev is a much better version of Raonic..or at least will be soon.
I hope Pouille can shine. A SF would be great!
Dimi...he may do it, I heard he's upped his fitness.
I know all players want to win it, but I wonder how many have the belief they can or will.
Stan will be dangerous, it's his favourite format, best of 5.
Don't know what to think of Fed. I suppose one day at a time.

I actually am not a fan of Zverev. He stands so far back....its ugly. ...but I am sure he will beat Djoko and Murray very soon. He is a better version of them. I am even pretty sure that Nadal cannot win against him any longer.
I think Djoko is more beatable than Murray atm.....but if both were in the final my money would be on Djoko....of course.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
I've gone someone else (Raonic and Federer! ), but it's likely going to be Djokovic or Murray.
I can't honestly believe it will be someone else in my mind. Let's do the %:
Murray 30%
Djokovic 30%
Wawrinka 20%
Raonic 10%
Kyrgios 10%
Of course, away from my personal % there's the truth... Federer does have a small chance. We can't be sure how much because we haven't seen him play in a Slam after the injury. But realistically, it's not going to be him. Nadal is an outside shot as well.

A confident inform Djokovic will win it. In the words of Blur "There is no other way"
I cling to the hope someone will stand up and be counted and have a breakthrough moment. Keep hoping Goffin or Thiem will do something.
Shame about Delpo because I think he would've shaken things up a bit.

Yes, however you think and turn it - it comes out like that...
Agree about Delpo. He is another "Stan", capable of big things. He must have reinjured himself during that Davis Cup final.
Hopefully, he'll be back for clay season.
Goffin and Thiem, I don't see them winnig anything outside 500 events.
Not sure if Goffin is able to improve his serve, that's his only chance.
Then again there are even better players - Mannarino for example, just not fit enough.
It's a two tier competition.

No. He is facing a silent life ban with occasional parole to be able to play some tournaments.

You don't have to win a tournament to be a doper.
Nadal hasn't won a tournament for ages and he stil dopes.
Most of them do.
But it's obviously beyond your comprehension, so no point wasting time in that conversation.
You'll remember all this one day when their names come out.

Good to see Pouille in the top 16.
Shame Federer missed out. At least he is seeded as 17...same as the number of slams he won.
If I have learnt anything during these years of "The Show", draw is more important than seeding.
Federer is here because of Wimbledon, I suppose.
Every little helps.
I can't believe the top three.
At least the next three are fun!
Didn't realise Ferrer had such a big tumble from the top.
Beginning of the end for the old guard....they did well do battle 10 years past their peak!

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Looking at that, Fed will obviously want to avoid Rafa in R3. He should comfortably handle the rest of the 9-16 seeds - although I suspect he'd prefer to avoid Kyrgios and Dimitrov.
Last 16, he will then be guaranteed to be seeded to face one of the top 4 seeds. Pretty obvious the order of preference there!

Ironically, in half of those clips he eventually lost the match. However, in terms of peak performances of Federer, the AO can't be overlooked. So sad this is the last time we'll see him here. But that's what we can say all year.
I would pick Djoko as favorite to win. Someone has to prove he's tougher to beat than Djoko, until that moment, this title is his to lose.
2017 could be a year of transistion, but for now i think the top 5 (and i would't rule Nadal out yet) seems quite steady.
The AO draw is interesting this year. The lower ranking of Nadal and Federer is spicing things up. In contrary to what Slippy says, i actually think Federer wants to meet the big names as soon as possible. He's playing for the glory now, not the titles.

I didn't know that!
Very interesting...
And I agree about Federer wanting to meet top 4 as early (i.e. fresh) as possible.
Same reason I thought Djokovic beat Nadal in RG in 2015, in straigjt sets!
It was the QF.
I wonder how Nadal would have fared that year if he had a different QF draw. He looked quite fierce in the first set.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
The draw is out!
Federer in Murray's quarter. Pouille in Murray's round of 16.
Tough draw for Federer - two qualifiers first, Berdych and Nishikori and then Murray/Pouille.
This time last year, he would beath them all, but now, I don't know what to expect.
Djokovic has Verdasco in round one!
Nadal on course to play Zverev after a few rounds,
Interesting first round matches:
Raonic- D. Brown
Dolgopolov-Coric
Fognini-F. Lopez
Paire-Tommy Haas (!!!)
Khachanov-Mannarino
Federer in Murray's quarter. Pouille in Murray's round of 16.

The AO has been a non-starter for a Federer for ages, all that matters is a decent show and good fitness. More meaningful events lie later in the year.
That said, the whole thing us boring me.

Well, he reached the SF last year, lost to Djokovic.
Imagine if he was in Murray's half of the draw.
I am sure he came to Oz to win the title.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
A good reminder to all that the game gets tougher year in year out.
All players say that. More so those who have been at the very top.
Murray: “The reality is, in sport, things obviously keep moving on, the game will get better. I'll obviously get older, the young guys will continue to improve, and also Novak and Roger and Stan (Wawrinka) and Rafa (Nadal) and all the guys at the top are still going to be wanting to get there.
“So that's why having someone like Ivan (Lendl) on my team, who has been in that position before and knows what that's like, has been important.
“I need to continue to improve. I for sure need to keep working hard – I don't think necessarily working harder than I have in the past – but just having the mindset I need to keep getting better and try to improve my game. Any weaknesses that are in my game, to try to get rid of them.”

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Well, that is more than obvious, still some refuse to believe players decline after 25, 27...
Just because Nadal's game is passe doesn't mean he still isn't doping and as strong as in 2010.
Murray is playing better than ever even though he can't beat Federer now and could 8-9 years ago.
Against Djokovic in Doha, he played some excellemt dropshots and stop volleys he didn'use to play in their previous matches, amd it still wasn't enough.
Djokovic on the other hand, started playing FHDTL often and well...
So everyone is getting better, of course.
Even Nadal is.
Just that his best isn't good enough any more.

Still beatable, though Lu is a very good grinder.

Finally tennis is back. Hard to tell this early in the year who will be in what form, so hard to tell who the biggest threats to the top two will be.
The top two themselves are clearly the two favorites. Hopefully they will slip early though.

That's probably because you are looking at results.
Didn't he win Monte Carlo last year?
Nadal is playing a meter closer to the baseline than before, that is a mammoth improvement.
His FH is faster and has lower net clearance.
He is even trying to shorten points.

Hey SB,
I know you are big into safety, numbers and statistics, but when are you going to say something bold and crazy!
I too hope 1&2 (though much more 1 than 2) get knocked out.
Maybe Rublev beats Murray in round 2.
I wouldn't stress if Verdasco takes out Nole, either.
Though ideally, Fed schools Murray like in good old days...

I have decided to lead by example!
I voted for Federer to win AO.
That's it!
All I need to do now is to tune in with RF frequency and find a song in my heart.
WOW!
It doesn't get crazier than that...fasten the seatbelts oh ye scattered madmen around the galaxies!
No more crystal ball.
Disco ball time.
I can hear tam-tam starting its wild call.
Hey, and crickets zeezing in warm summer night.
So that's where it all comes from, Roger...
Nice!

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Some years I at least have hunches one way or another but this year I am particularly confused. It is all jumbled up - players with the best form are not necessarily the best players.NITB wrote:when are you going to say something bold and crazy!
Andy has been the form player even though Nole has been far superior in the longer run. So who to pick? I would probably go with Andy but I am sort of like Tenez on this - I think Nole's form is still too suspect so I think he is more likely to lose before the final but if they both make it, I would expect that Nole would win there. I did not see their match in Doha. If Andy had won there I would be leaning quite strongly towards him.
I am actually more interested in some of the smaller names this year. Zverev vs Nadal could be interesting. My guess is that Zverev will be strong enough to beat Nadal if they meet, but I am not too sure as I have not seen him play in a while (I mean Zverev).
How will Stan do? My guess is that this will be a bad slam for him. Do not really know why, just a random hunch.
What about Dimitrov? I used to believe in him for so long and last year I have finally started giving up, but now he all of a sudden starts the year with a promising result. Was it a one-off, or will he come back to life? My guess is that it was a one-off and that he will do little here, but hopefully I am wrong.
How about the young Aussies - esp Kyrgios? I find Kyrgios's game to be one of the most entertaining DHBHs around so I hope he will do well. I think he has a lot of potential (more so than some others believe). I think he, by some distance, has the most raw potential of his generation.
What about Thiem? TBH, I am not a big fan of his game but I largely forgive him because of his SHBH so I hope he will do well. But again, not really expecting it.
Raonic I think attained his limit already. I do not see him getting better than he is. He is I think doing quite well given his size and given his natural abilities. But I do not see him doing much better than what he has done so far.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
I think Dimi will soon be in the top 10 and for good. But I don;t see him having the nerves to win slams. Maybe late in his career a la Stan when he will realise he has nothing to lose.
He has a slams winning game for sure....just not the mind.

I still think Nole is a superior player than Murray, but Murray is fitter.summerblues wrote:Some years I at least have hunches one way or another but this year I am particularly confused. In their match in Doha, Nole was attacking, Murray retreiving, it was hard to put the ball past him.
Best of 5, it gets even easier for Nole. He is so much more energy efficient than Murray.
He just needs to be patient.

I think it will be a close match, mainly because Nadal is a great mover.
Zverev is a good competitor, not a choker.
Unless he is injured, no reason he should not do very well.summerblues wrote:

He likes AO surface, and above all it's a best of 5 format which I thinks suits him more than best of 3.
He has more time ro recapture momentum which his all-attack high risk game needs very much.
I think he plays the most high risk tennis atm (apart from maybe Dustin Brown, but that's another story)
Well, you know I wasn't a big fan od Dimi under Rasheed, but I saw a bit of him a few weeks ago, and he was playing very well, attacking tennis, going for his FH, looked fit.summerblues wrote:

So I think, he will be very dangerous as he has all the shots and is a good mover.
I think he can knock Nole out, for example. I think thatt says enouh.
He has a great serve and that's about it.summerblues wrote:

Not much between his ears, plus a coward...if a match doesn't go his way, he can't stand losing face and chucks tantrums, tanks matches etc.
A real disgrace.
Too sweaty, his FH needs reworking.summerblues wrote:

Raonic is not my cup of tea. Too mechanical and by the book.summerblues wrote:

Everything about him is effort.
He's playing the wrong sport. Should've gone for basketball or stg....

Yes pretty sure Zverev will beat Nadal. Nadal's spin is perfect for his shots. Guys like Zverev are/will be much better version than Soderling or Delpo and they will not leave a chance to Nadal...though he is still young.

Terrible draw for Fed. Kyrgios, Nishikori, Berdych, Wawrinka... all in same quarter.

I think besides Kyrgios all woudl have lost (maybe even fed) by the time they meet.

Yes, because there is clearly no correlation between improving and winning.NITB wrote:Veejay wrote:you really think so?NITB wrote:Well, that is more than obvious, still some refuse to believe players decline after 25, 27...
I haven't seen much improvement in the last 2 or so years
That's probably because you are looking at results.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Berdych needs to only beat Harrison and Nishikori faces Chardy then Lacko/Sela. You'd get long odds on both of them losing before making their scheduled match ups with Fed.Tenez wrote:I think besides Kyrgios all woudl have lost (maybe even fed) by the time they meet.

Yep you right. Tougher than I thought for Fed but very interesting.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
I gave Fed a low % of winning, but it's now down to almost 0. If Kyrgios or Nishikori turn up, Fed just back to competitive play is not going to win. Kyrgios will prob blow him away. Worst draw he could have had this. His quarter is LOADED. If he wins this tournament it will be monumental. Even getting to SF will be.

I think Federer can still beat Berdych. Kyrgios and Nishi shoudl be tougher.

BUT....looking at the draw, he won't have to meet Kygios before meeting Murray. I expect Kyrgios to have gone by then.

Re: Australian Open 2017(The Draw Is Out!)
Federer is probably going to be gone by then - he very likely has the world number 1 to play in his very first tournament back. Kyrgios has a chance to win the whole thing.
