ATP Masters 1000: Montreal
After the glory of European clay&grass spring/summer we are now back on hard courts of America: loud music in the changeovers, kiss-cam, shirtless people in the crowd, late nights and early mornings...but, hey, we all love it!

This is Nole dancing to "Get lucky" in Rogers cup last year.
It worked

I'm glad he's playing:
21, SBH, brave heart, robust inside out, enjoying good form...he can't stop now, can he?
I don't even dare split any hairs over his style...he is endangered species.
I am trying to imagine him at 31 and it's not easy.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Montreal
Yes...yet so little/no hype about him.
Remember all the attention Dimi got...
But it's probably better for him to fly under the radar. He's improved so much in the last year.
I just wish he took the ball earlier.
Maybe it'll come with years, smoother timing etc...
He is not a grinder like GG Lopez or weaponless like Youzhny or Kholi, but I still can't distinguish what if any weapons he actually has.
He is very aggressive, yet his shots so physical...must be the "modern" way...not easy being a SBH at all these days.

Did anyone watch Nishi-Cilic the other day?
Both had excellent patches of play, but Cilic being his introvert self got schooled by Nishi's quick hands in the end.
Nishi had an MTO; his leg clearly not built for endurance and too much pressure, shame...

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Montreal
He does potentially, but blunts his FH by spinning it, he would be sooooo much better if he took it early.
His ball-striking is very sweaty and he can't afford to waste energy in current conditions.
He lost to Verdasco in Wimbledon because of that, despite being a break up in the 5th. Simply ran out of steam and started pulling the trigger too early.
Sorting out his FH will be the key to his big trophy winning.

What's striking in this clip is how quick the ball slows down once past the net and even more so after the bounce. Looks like Wii tennis.luvsports! wrote:Watch this. Thiem has a lot of weapons.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Montreal
What's so painful for Stan is that Kyrgios didn't even do it out of gamemanship. He said it at the back of the court where no one could hear it, except the microphones..which he must have known. That's really nasty. Stan is not the guy who would back off in a confrontation, but he couldn't defend here..
And then Kyrgios' reaction:
"He was getting a bit lippy with me. Kind of in the heat of the moment, I don't know, I just said it."
Roughly translated that would be something like "can someone please slap me in the face?"
Kyrgios thinks he's a real tough guy, probably proudly texting over it to his mates. But sooner or later he'll pay the price. His bahaviour will cause serious damage to his tennis career and probably his life thereafter, no doubt.

Thoughts?
Badly brought up young man with no self-restraint; reminds us again that ...sport does not build character, only reveals it.
Kyrgios is a product of modern "reality" culture.
Let's hang it all out, "honesty" above all...well, here it was last night in full "glory"...
Was Mirka's :"Crybaby!" in O2 last year much better?

Look forward to Nishi-Nadal today.
Nishi is in great form, but still has underlying problems with his leg/back, I think.
Nadal's biceps look bigger than ever. And that's WITH sleeves on.

Is it just me or is Djokovic hitting his forehand down the line like Nadal does with the follow through over the same shoulder ? Weird to see Djokovic hit that so much.

And now he is copying Nadal by double faulting on break point, if this continues pretty sure Nadal can file a copyright lawsuit.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Montreal
Nadal's ground game wasn't too bad there... but his serve was awful.
Against a great returner like Nishikori, if you're hitting tonnes of second serves and also many double faults; you'll always be in trouble.
Nishi played very well, he's 25 now so I'd expect performances like that very frequently from him, no reason why he can't considering his ability.

No, not a fan in the classic meaning of the word.
Cheered for Federer in Wimbledon final.
I'm still fond of him, just don't know how much.
Never been crazy about his tennis, but liked the fire with which he fought, especially knowing his background and trying personal circumstances.
Nole is like a family member to all Serbs.

Murray doesn;'t deserve the number 2 spot after what happened in Wimbedon. Hope Nishi can come and trouble the top 3.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Montreal
I am disappointed with Nishi's lack of stomach for the fight last night.
He just caved in and capitulated.
I understand he may have been a bit spent after his match with Nadal (which puts Nole's RG wins over Nadal and Murray in the best of 5 ON CLAY into perspective), but still poor showing.
I don't know if he was injured, he was late on some shots, his returning was very average, as well.
It's a different physical league for him, but he has those quick hands and takes the ball early...should have won.
Murray played nothing special - just kept drilling a CCFH into the corner with all his muscled might...the rest was all safe and spinny.
Much better match between Nole and Chardy.
Was pleasantly surprised to see Jeremy play with confidence...what a difference!
Gorgeous FH, but difficult for him against someone as athletic and agile as Nole.
A really nice guy, too.

Well I guess Nishi was spent. Can't believe Murray is number 2 after the thrashing at Wimbledon.
I like Chardy....and his game is maturing....but Djoko's legs are hard to get past.
Tonight I can see a tight match if Djoko has a sore elbow. Of he is ok.....a straight win for Djoko.

I can understand getting into golf once you get reeeealy old and can't play any other sport, or maybe as a chore for business networking...but where is the fun in watching?

The thing is as much as I dislike Djoko's game, I dislike Murray's game even more. If the 3 could lose that woudl be even better.
