The Old Guns
I can't decide who is more interesting - young or old guns!
We have quite a few 34,5 year olds who are showing no signs of slowing down!!!
Federer, Ferrer, Karlovic, Feli & GG Lopez...
I was going to start a thread of predicting top 10 in 2017, but I have no idea who I'd put in there myself, and mainly because I can't predict what current sport's medicine is able to do for players' stamina.
And from that point of view write Nadal off at your own peril.
Let alone Ferrer.
And the growing bulk of 30 year old plus players (Stan, Berdych, Gasquet, Tsonga, Simon, Isner, Seppi...)
Next year- Nadal, Monfils, Anderson & Troicki are turning 30, as well...
These are all TOP 30 players.
In 2017, even Nole, Murray and Fognini will be 30!!!
Anyone here brave to predict top 10 in 2017?

Re: The Old Guns
I think 35yo are not that interesting cause they actually are on their last leg. Sure they can do well on a match or 2 but in essence they are doomed in slams.
As much as I thought Fed coudl/should have won 2 slams last year, I think it's only going to get much harder from now on. I wish I was wrong but I believe that though a 35yo player could play his best match, he simply cannot line matches needed to win a slam.
So in that respect.....I woudl prefer to look at the youngsters.....but I am not sure we will see the grace, Fed gave us so far.

Yes, but how do you see current 30 year olds doing at 35?Tenez wrote:I think 35yo are not that interesting cause they actually are on their last leg. Sure they can do well on a match or 2 but in essence they are doomed in slams.
Will Stan/Berd/Gasquet/Tsonga still be top 10-15 like Ferrer is now.
It is, especially as he plays clean.Tenez wrote:

The saddest bit for me is when his shots then look obsolete as the matches get into 3rd and 4th sets making him look old and tired whereas the truth is, he is just playing with no chemicals to make him look "young" like Ferrer or superfit like the other top players.

I can only let a big sad sigh there...
Grace is out of the question for young players who even talented have all been trained to bash...what else can they do with these strings?
So we will have to console ourselves with well timed, low net clearance bashing of Rubi, or that interesting FH of Chung...
But despite technologies etc, Fed was a one-off.
Geniuses aren't born every day...

LS,
for some reason I have never been into Sci-fi, so can't appreciate any of the Star Wars references.
I actually had to google "sith" to see what it was!
I am still discovering the cosmos in my own head!

Well that's the thing.
I watch him like I listen to my favourite pieces of music performed by dead maestros: Kempff, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Menuhin...on Youtube clips.
He transcends even sport for me - it's about enjoying him as a piece of art, the special gift he's manicured so well.
He has already got that vintage black and white patina.
Having said that, one more in Wimbledon would be a gorgeous bonus, just to see him fall on his knees...

Re: The Old Guns
Janko Tipsarevic, 31, in a recent talk-show on Serbian TV:
"Instead of just settling down, I visited 15 different doctors, had 15 different conspiracy theories, I was beginning to go mad, nuts because of it all...
I'm hoping for a big comeback next year.
For me, that would be return to top 10.
Current situation in our sport is such that there are many older players who are able to play high quality tennis and keep well physically."
There you go....
