Unreal tennis from Stan. Could this have a happy ending against all odds? Dare we dream?

Well, that game was just what Novak needed. Stan must keep his aggression on his serves.

What a shame.
Really sad for Nole.
Didn't watch after second set, only the very last game now.
He was completely and utterly dead both in the legs and arms.
Despite the brainwashing "he is the fittest" propaganda, he is only human.
At least he thrashed Nadal...

So, we did get our ABN wishes this time around!
And we have a SHBH RG champ too!!!
Just unreal. With a little luck, Nole will never win FO now.

That BH down the line which led to the final break is probably the best tennis shot ever hit (given the circumstances).

I thought Stan started the match ok but not great. But as the match progressed he was becoming more and more comfortable and hitting better and better. From the third set on, it was all one way traffic.
Still, I half expected him to buckle under pressure as he was serving for the match.

Stan... you beauty... you truly saved tennis. It was for too long that percentage play based on fitness was winning. It was just no longer a game of talent and skill and shots but just keep the ball in play till an error ocurres. Its time to show that risk shot maker can win slams.. and how.
What a player Stan ' the man' is.

It was great. But I've not lost the memory of the one Fed hit the the 4th set TB at wimbledon 2008 finals to save the MP. It was maybe a bit better for me... considering how much spin and angle Nadal can generate with the left hand.

Tennis is bit more than just shot-making. Stan often lacks belief and focus in matches. And its the same playing just about anyone on tour, not just top rankers. He has lost a lot of matches from winning position just because of nerves. He still hasn't reached where someone like Fed/Nadal/Djokovic are when it comes to mental strength. But so glad he has managed to do it on a few occasions.gallery play wrote:Tenez wrote:I played tennis from 10am to 5pm...in scorching temps. Re: Roland Garros 2015: Daily Prediction game day 15 Men's FINAL
Today showed he's anything but mentally weak. I'd say it's his big frame which cost him many matches. He usually loses the long matches. Take a look at this:
AO 2015 Djoko 6-7(1), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 0-6
USO 2014 Nishi 6-3, 5-7, 6-7(7), 7-6(5), 4-6
Wimbledon 2014 Federer L 6-3, 6-7(5), 4-6, 4-6
USo 2013 Djoko 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6
AO 2013 Djoko 6-1, 5-7, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-12
Wimbledon 2012 Melzer 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2, 4-6, 6-8
RG 2012 Tsonga 4-6, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-3, 4-6
USO 2011 YOung 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(1)
USO 2010 Youznhy 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3, 3-6, 3-6
Wimbledon 2010 Istomin 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-2, 6-7(4), 3-6
However, the same big frame helps him to hit a awful lot of winners..
AO 2015 Djoko 6-7(1), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 0-6

Wimbledon 2014 Federer L 6-3, 6-7(5), 4-6, 4-6

He was clutch today. The hold from 0-40 was immense.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:He still hasn't reached where someone like Fed/Nadal/Djokovic are when it comes to mental strength.
I was impressed with how he took the loss of the first set - no panic at all, just went about his business and as the match progressed was getting more and more solid with his shots.
He is the only SHBH in the current game that I can think of that is able to stay in the rallies with DHBHs.

I like it, too.
When Stan turns up, those matches are really good.
What upsets me is that Nole had not a single day's rest before the final. That was very unfair on him, and not the first time.
He was totally spent after the second set.
He'll recover in every way very quickly once adrenaline runs its mad course.
I'll keep that bottle of champers until he wins it.

he has the best "modern" SHBH game on SLOW COURT. I agree. He is the only one who can hit through the slow pace from both sides. But I am pretty sure that Fed will beat him again soon when fit...regardless the surface cause Fed is still the best shot maker by far...when fit.Seriously: given his shotmaking ability he's a huge underachiever. I'd say he's the best shotmaker around.

I remember 4 or 5 years ago, Stan had a very close game v Fed and already then I saw Stan's genius. I had the feeling that if Stan had played anyone else he would have won. and Today he did confirm that.
You should read the thread I had with Paul..where I argued a year or 2 ago that Stan was a better player than Djoko. So this is not news to me.
My only problem with Stan is that he has not got those quick hands,.....but Nowadays no-one has as they are not really needed.

Yes but Rotla as I said many times, nerves for shot makers like Stan are not the same as nerves for those retrievers.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Tennis is bit more than just shot-making. Stan for instance today had lots of pressure to cross the line when serving at 5/4 in the 4th....had he not Djoko woudl have probably won in 5. That's the huge difference between an attacker and a retriever.....on those slow surfaces.
Stan is as strong as one can get with such risky, powerful shots, using a SHBh, therefore with a smaller sweetspot.
Ask Nadal and Djoko to play one SHBH, and you will see their mental strength collapse!

Djoko is now the one who thrives on those long rallies....so it is again only fair he pays the price for it over the distance.
To me that was actually pretty fair. Stan would not have played those 33 shots rallies with Murray. He may have lost earlier maybe but he would have lost fresher.
But he coudl not blast Murray of the court. He accepted those long rallies and chose to inflict Murray those long rallies as well to kill Murray in the 5th.AceofDeath wrote:What upsets me is that Nole had not a single day's rest before the final. That was very unfair on him, and not the first time.

That's not what i would conclude. Let's say Stan had failed to serve it out, who would have won the fifth? You know Djoko would not have been too tired to win the fifth...
Stan's shots were overwhelming for Djoko, he was a spectator today. I think he'll blame himself for being too passive but he actually did what he did all year: playing steady, bringing back as much as possible but today it wasn't enough. A bit like RG semi 2011 actually.
We've seen in the past that if Djoko really tires, he'll play all or nothing. But today he chose till the very end to wait for Stan to miss. Stan didn't miss.

I agree that Djoko would have probably won in the 5th.....but he still looked tired in this last set and a half I saw. Really tired actually....and frankly not surprisingly. Stan's shots certainly contributed hugely in Djoko's burn out. But I think Nadal and Murray played their part too. How coudl it be otherwise?gallery play wrote:Tenez wrote:I was never in doubt, but again, Djoko was quite tired and under par.
