Nadal's spin Empty Nadal's spin

Post by gallery play Sun May 31, 2015 8:26 pm

Did anyone see the Eurosport preview on Sock-Nadal in "the coach" item?

Jack Sock seems to be the only player on tour who can compete with Nadal in terms of spin.
To be precise, the average of spin since the beginning of the season:
Jack: 3336 rpm
Rafa: 3397 rmp

Hopeful isn't it? Well no..since the beginning of RG Nadal's average increased to 3700 rpm!!!

I think this is highly suspicious. Or was Nadal deliberately holding back until now? You tell me.

Nadal's spin Empty Re: Nadal's spin

Post by Tenez Sun May 31, 2015 8:56 pm

Very interesting indeed! I don't know if you read my post a week or so ago...I wrote it after having watched a highlight of Fed Nadal A012.....2 months after Federer inflicted a 63 60 to Nadal in London.

The energy and spin Nadal showed in that AO 12 match v Federer was insane. Only Djoko managed to stop him by draining him over 5 sets.

I must say a 10% increase in spin is huge...though an explication could be the slower (softer ball). They woudl tycally get more bite from the strings than the dunlop forte which are harder and therefore stay less in the racquet......but 10% more spin seems certainly a bit too much to be just down to the ball.

Nadal's spin Empty Re: Nadal's spin

Post by noleisthebest Sun May 31, 2015 9:03 pm

I saw Sock against Thiem on grass last year, his FH was a lot easier on the eye.
I would love to know how much spin Thiem loads on his FH.

Nadal has a different grip anyway, so his spin comes with a moonball.

How much will the alleged missing extra few hundred of rpm mean in real life with these dead balls, esp if it's wet...

I like the fact it's Langlen, so not that much running space for him.

I think we can begin to grow some hope!

the 3397 rmp is a season's average. Which makes an increase of 10% even more obscure.
Mind you, nothing was said about an increase of 10% from Sock's side..

That's a good point....if only nadal has that increase then the balls are certainly less of a factor.

I think Sock may have a chance tomorrow. Nadal fears the hard hitters and Sock certainly can hit very hard.

I'm actually worried Djoko will meet a different Nadal, not the one he could handle as easy a few weeks ago.

The spin stats are worrying. The moonball Nadal hits seems to accelerate after the bounce: you can't attack it.

About Thiem, he'll probably hits averages like many others. Sock and Nadal are in a different league.

That's what "the coach" said too. Sock is one of the best servers on tour, that's not something NAdal looks forward too.
On paper Sock is NAdal's nightmare: he fights fire with fire and brings an extra weapon Nadal does not have.

But, 22 year old Sock will not beat Nadal. Not yet.

Sock on clay will be similar to  Kyrgios on grass for Nadal.

I didn't notice any different spin with Nadal, quite the opposite, his balls are shorter than last year and quite attackable.

Nole should have beaten Nadal last year if it wasn't for his sickness and superhot weather.
This year Nole has improved and Nadal hasn't.

For Sock, he only thing that worries me is his footwork, I don't think he hits the ball well on the run.

It's going to be superhot next week apparently so all the stars start to align for a great show on Wednesday.

Yeah but that is everything.

If he can keep his nerve and hold serve, he should be fine.
He could just be another Soderling, except I think Sod had a better BH.

I had a look, overcast 21-23 degrees...that's perfect weather, it was over 30 degrees in direct sun last year.

Nadal's spin Empty Re: Nadal's spin

Post by noleisthebest Sun May 31, 2015 10:00 pm

I tried to find stat on Thiem's FH, but only found this:

"6:3, 6:1 against Juan Monaco. That was a really good match. Mega depth and mega heavy spin are a mega kombination in the altitude of Kitzbühel. Tomorrow against David Goffin for the title. I can't wait to go out there and play. It will be a real fight. Goffin already beat me twice this year and plays so strong this week. So solid. Takes the ball so early, returns so well and handles speed so easily. What I need to do is play aggressively right from the start and show him who is the local hero here in Kitzbühel. Because the mega fans here are such an advantage. They already made the difference a few times this week. Bamos!"

He certainly has a weird grip.

I do not see Sock beating Rafa, but he is the first opponent that can test Rafa.  The match should tell us what form Rafa is in heading to his QF.

But as far as the title goes, I think it will be either Nole or nobody that will stop Rafa.  If Rafa is playing well enough to beat Nole in QF, then he is playing well enough to beat everyone else too.

The bottom half is as unpredictable as can be. Nishi, Fed, Tsonga, Cilic, Wawrinka..they all can make it to the final. In fact they all already played a GS final.
Just as interesting; can a fresh Murray beat the winner of a 5 hour dogfight?

However, we have to realize Nadal is in warmode. The spinstats suggest he's ready the most physical battle you can imagine. Unfortunatly i can't watch today, but i'll check otf now and then.

Nadal's spin Empty Re: Nadal's spin

@OP Where did the information that Nadal's spin average increased to 3.700 RPM come from? Did they mention it in this Eurosport-interview?

If true, amazing how well he once again managed to time his peak for RG. He will come prepared to fight for his life in QF I think. Here's to hoping for a 6 hrs slugfest.  Bubbly

He is not alone with one-off performances in majors though. Cilic, Wawrinka and Tsonga also overperformed so far in RG compared to their previous outings this season.

Yeah, it was mentioned in the item "the coach", right after Game, set and Mats. The soft balls probably help, like T said. But i guess no one added 200+ rpm from the beginning of RG on his season's average. I can't prove it though.

Side note: any player can handle a 3700 rpm spinning ball, it's Nadals peak spin which are almost impossible to handle. I'm sure Jack Sock's peak spin is not close to Nadals peak
