When you think that Dolgo had a point or 2 for a 5/1 lead in that second set!

Djoko blew off the flame that Dolgo was on the court court for nearly 2 sets.

Looks like Djoko had another crowd against himself.

But frankly he can only blame himself, having made an efficient but sparkles tennis. It's a bit like asking the crowd to side by the banker instead of the artist.....unlikely.

There is a fundamental difference between Nadal and Federer. Nadal strength is his physique. He came 10 years ago with a physique no one could match. 10 years in many can have that kind of fitness; Djoko and Murray to name a few.

Federer is a one in a century talent. So far no drug can give you that kind of talent. That is the difference.

Having said that Thiem is still improving fast and is learning to play guys like Djoko and Murray while his learning curve is really steep, so his chance of beating Djoko and Murray in the future are greater than Federer but in terms of talent Thiem is not as good as Federer...though he is not bad!

I didn't ask for the difference between Nadal and Federer ? Or whether Thiem is more talented than Federer.

I asked whether you felt that he, at the level he is now, would dominate 2006 like Federer did ?
Would he be able to beat Nadal in RG 2006 final at his current level?

I answered that.

Would he be able to beat Nadal in RG 2006 final at his current level?
Most likely. If you can run Murray 2015 close, you can most likely beat a young Nadal. At least take a couple of sets...then whether Thiem can withstand 3 or 5 sets is another matter....probably not based on today performance. But he probably could have beaten him in 3.

Thiem advanatge over Federer 06 is that he is already used to hit spinny ball with his BH and is using a considerable bigger frame than Fed back then.
To me it is clear that Federer with a more powerful BH (a la Thiem) woudl have beaten Nadal in 3 sets back then. Thiem might not have as good a round game but in 2006 nadal was not nearly as good as in 2010 onwards .But the main problem for Nadal today is that he doesn;t bring anything new on the table.

Ah, so you think Thiem would likely have beaten Nadal for the French Open 2006 ? (which Federer 2006 couldn't do)
Do you also think he would have likely beaten Nadal in Wimbledon 2006 ? What about USO and Aus Open, would Thiem have started favourite for both those slams too ?

Of course. already back then 61, 1 up and 0/40 up. He would keep the foot down nowadays.

Ah phew, thank goodness you chose a really representative set of Fed vs Nadal on clay in the mid-noughties.

It's not the only one. There was a 61 or 62 in Rome as well, Hamburg 07, 60, Hamburg 08 5/1 until Nadal cheated with a MTO. fed has a better game than nadal on clay over a set...his problem was over 3 sets or more.

Nadal just maanged to last longer most of the time. Waiting patiently that his opponent woudl get tired.

But I told you. Nadal never beat Federer within the rule. You know that, don;t you? Whether the referees apply the rule or not, is another matter.

Fantastic set from Nole.

It's been a while since I've seen him so sharp and focused, and Ferru's played very, very well!
Nole really wants Miami, and I wouldn't mind seeing another drubbing of Murray. Or Berdych.

Nadal must be thanking Verdasco for saving his H2H Winking

Completely in da zone.

Semis look interesting today.

After watching last night's match, I can't see Isner beating Nole in his current form, although there is a small chance, as Isner will probably take a lot of confidence from beating Nishi, and they are playing in the hottest part of the day.

Murray-Berdych a lot closer, I'd say 55/45.

Nishi seems to have hit some kind of a brick wall, I hope he can restart himself on clay.

The player I really wanted to do well was Dolgo.
Unfortunately I missed the best part against Nole (1set and up to 4:1 2nd) but from the highlights it looks it was a great match up to that point, so shame he got spent and injured.
His tennis is actually best on clay.

In today's semi-final its ABM for me.

Berd was out of his sorts in that match. Murray played with a good confidence and deservedly won.

Yes, that was an easy one for Murray.

Berd really capitulates when he faces good returners with a DBH.

I was paying close attention to Murray who was again very passive, almost lazy.
He could do so much more but he just makes his life difficult because he is a stubborn, physical, pushing counterpuncher with a dodgy serve...yet he is in the final!

Berd was just too cautious which he can't afford in these slow conditions.

He seems to know his limits and doesn't fight & should be able to intimidate with his serve and FH like Cilic but he is happy to stay on the baseline...and that is never going to be enough in his case.

So a strange match between two gutless big muscular players...but for them it's a job.

Berd looked mentally lost in that match. He was a kind of beaten before the match started. Not sure if there was in it their last match at AO or if there was a healthy problem. He looked baked and really passive, fearful. He didnt help himself much with the first serve and had to run more, which he doesnt like.
Berd can be often easily distracted on the court. He can play a big match, but must be really composed. But Murray played a clever game against Berd and got under his skin.

One harsh comment on Berd's today match. The only thing he changed since Dani Valverde joined to his bench is not wearing his usual cap. His head had to be baked on the sun today.

Dropped off on the sofa and just couldn't keep my eyes open even when I woke up at 12.30 when it was 2:2.

But am glad for the final line-up.

It's going to be a very brutal physical match in this crazy hot Miami weather.

Even more brutal than in the past as Nole is hitting the ball quicker now.

Murray will wilt after a set, so whoever wins the first one will be important.

And then I remember how average Murray serves and have nothing to worry about smiley

Stan should do well on clay but he needs to wake up, he's lost his match playing sharpness.
Clay should allow him to get into groove soon, but other are there too!

I actually enjoyed the season so far, there has been some good tennis despite slow courts... players have had to start hitting harder and faster to "bypass" slow conditions.

The tour looks promising for spring.

Nope nothing to worry about but it shows yet again how easy it is for the roadrunners with high margins to cut through the draws.

Nadal showed the way...Djoko and Murray followed....in their own way but same principle.

True.

But that's the latest stage of tennis evolution. It's even got the followers among the youngsters (Coric, Zverev, Kokki) but more on the "other" side: Rublev, Thiem, Pouille, Kurgy, Vesely...I have a feeling the balance will swing the right way.

Not sure what it is really. Djoko was in Dubai's final. We need slippery surface to limit the mouvement advantage....or as I said balls which don't take take the spin as much. Anyway the new generation will sort it out!

I don't tink slippery surfaces is a good idea, it will lead to injuries, remember blue clay?

But the balls would definitely help, the easiest solution by far.

Where there is a will there is a way.
