Idiotic crowds at IW Empty Idiotic crowds at IW

Tennis has always been a sport of gentlemen, whose crowds used to behave better than in different places.
I really admire an ethic code of Wimbledon, where is the best tennis atmosphere going from the people who love a tradition, a fairplay and love the game. Just to be sure for making a superb atmosphere, every visitor of Wimbledon gets a written behavior code.

There are two basic rules in particular, which need to be kept during the game, i.e. yelling / an applause is allowed after the game is finished and applausing of double faults is not allowed.

The IW final was from the fans perspective a different sport. People were yealling and screaming all over the time, eating humburgers everywhere, jumping like on baseball events. I suspect that some fans carried a portable grill and had a barbecue there.

Hat off to Nole, he managed to find his composure after the second set TB, when fans became frenetic after Nole's doublefaulted twice in a row.  Fans absolutely denigraded the tennis fairness in such a great final. The average intelligence q. of American fan there was one hamburger at max.

Fortunately the better player won and it had no effect for the IW winner. But I have never seen so many idiots at tennis event.

Laugh

That's the price to pay for popularity of tennis!
The worst I have seen was when some idiot yelled out during Nole's second serve on match point in RG final last year and he doublefaulted.
That was completely heart-breaking, I stormed out of Chatrier and never saw presentation ceremony.

I agree about Wimbledon, people know when to cheer and when to be quiet, probably because of the way tickets are distributed, a lot of them are given to tennis clubs, and most people there are tennis fanatics who also play the game so know how important it is to have silence.
Though, for me personally Wimbledin is too quiet, I like a bit of spark in the atmosphere.

You are absolutely right, Wimbledon is too gentlemanish, which I like it.  It is the biggest GS, it is in conservative Britain, played on grass. It just can't be any different.

Americans  have also their best extras. They surely sold at IW  the most popcorn and hamburgers, the stadium noise equalized noise of JFK airport. Perhaps at least a tiny part of fans experienced to hold a racket in their life.

A crowd wants to get excited.....they want a show. I am afraid Djoko's game is well tuned but lacks sparks.

I don;t think Fed is anymore charismatic than Djoko. So their preference is originally based on game style I presume. It's obvious to see who has the nicer, better game though not the winning game on that surface. The crowd over-reacted I agree but they wanted a show, a longer one. You can't blame them much on this occasion.

I saw some DC matches, but never experienced that home crowds were  so frenetic when a host player double foulted.  It has nothing with the show, but with tennis ethic.
I would have never applaussed even Nadal's DF on behalf his opponent at the setpoint not even a simple ball. It depends on a fan preference and how they approach to tennis. From what I saw yesterday, a half of crowds showed how simple minded and limited they are. Of course Americans appreciate big shows. It will not take much time when they are going to build new stadiums for about 50 thousands, where  a rock band will play there, hamburgers will be falling from the sky and sellers will ride their bikes and everybody will shout at everybody.

Yes, with Nole's win in 3 sets, we could at least enjoy more brilliant tennis yesterday. Nole was by far a superior player at the final.

Sure but a crowd is made of many people and you are bound to have an idiot or 2. The one applauding or shouting does not represent the crowd.

Imho it can only be good if tennis moves away from that "gentlemanly" image. It smells of 19th century and old boys club, elitist and excluding. This is still sports and not opera or a violin concert.

That doesn't mean of course that the audience should be encouraged to behave real bad, but I don't see how supporting the underdog against the No. 1 player fits the bill, even if they cheer his faults. These faults are also points for the crowd favourite and the favourism might unsettle him, so the support might even be valuable. Nobody wants to see a crowd favourite get a beatdown, so they latch onto every chance they get. And the players are pros, they gotta live with the crowd which pays them handsomely for their effort in the end.

It shows they're engaged with the match, while a quiet atmosphere can only mean that either people are bored and don't care much who wins or loses or too stiff to express their emotions.

I hope that tennis will keep its status of a sport of gentlemen, cooler atmos and tradition. Those who don't like have many other options as fans. They can watch footbal, baseball, american footbal and if it is still not enough then the last resort is going to wrestling or circus. They can shout, scream, cry, sing, just whatever they want to do there. Meaning of the cooler atmos mean to stick to tennis applausing ethic on courts. The difference between cheering for faults from game and cheering double faults is striking. It is just disgraceful and people who clap for it just ruin the game. Who tennis played knows how disruptive these idiots are. The first biggest part of them are just idiots  and the second  part of them are betters. Both are idiots.
