No Spain in the main draw, after so many years!

Some good matches, GB-USA in Glasgow could've been interesting had the referendum had a different outcome Winking

Look forward to seeing Daddy Nole vs Baby Nole.

I won't get too excited about it though I must the Coric v Djoko shoudl be interesting as I wanted to see it in fact and see whether Coric will do better than v Federer.

Yes, that will be quite interesting. Daddy Nole's serving is significantly better, that should be enough for their first match.

Looks like DC 2015 is Serbia's to lose.

Golubev-Seppi already playing, Golubev...well, not one of his days.
He has great basic groundstrokes, but his FH is so fragile, even gentle Seppi can put pressure on it.

He's really cracked current conditions to a tee: fit, fast, safe and consistent.

It's as close as we'll get to see his improvement, I suppose.

I would not beat surprised if Coric were to beat Nadal on clay this year. He has the perfect game to counter Nadal.

Fognini beat him, it doesn't take much to beat Nadal nowadays anyway.
Djokovic will crush Coric if they plays in a few days.

Obviously you have to take what I'm saying in context, I'm saying that it doesn't take much for a top player, of course most players in the top 100 would struggle to beat Nadal still even now.

Until Nadal loses in RG, I'll take him as the man to beat on clay.
I'm pretty sure he must be bookies' favourite, as well.

John Isner is one of the most boring players I've ever seen. It's probably not even that hard to execute his serve (which is the only thing which keeps him afloat against most top 50 players...) considering he's so tall.

If it was easy, he would've won a lot more I think.
Height surely helps a lot, but it's far from everything.

Many tall players have average serve (for their height) eg Delpo.

Main thing is the timing, Serena has a great serve, Fed, Mannarino (you can barely hear the contact with the ball) Dolgo can also generate insane speed for his height.

Timing is important, but the margins become much easier the taller you are.
I can't even remember if it was Isner or Querrey, but I'm aware one of the biggest American players only took up tennis in college years.
Nice easy way to make a career, at 6'8 just serve down bombs, don't even bother improving a pathetic return game or groundstrokes... and hope you edge out enough tiebreaks.

You like being defamatory an outrageous in your comments, don't you? Do you even know what you are talking about? First, just for the record, they did not pick up tennis in college, it's just that they were playing in college. IIRC Isner had the choice between basket ball and tennis as a kid and chose tennis but went to college and turned pro rather late. Querry on the other hand turned pro at 19, which is not that late and he had turned down a scholarship for that... Now, on the more relevant subject, even though Isner's return game might not be his forte, you cannot seriously say it is pathetic when the guy had manged to get to #9 in the world at a time dominated by baseline rallying etc. and get to the final of two masters 1000 only to lose to Federer and Nadal, without being able to return and rally a bit? You might find the guy boring to watch, this is fine, but his groundstokes can be pretty good as someone who has watched some tennis should know... The Indian Wells he got to the final and Shanghai the previous year have good examples of matches where he played well, even groundstokes wise...

I can't remember which American player it was, but I do remember one taking up tennis seriously very very late.
Regardless, it does not make much different in my opinion of either Querrey or Isner.

There was a time where Isner's groundstrokes were a bit better (and with his ridiculous serve that would obviously make him very tough to beat, and most sets would come down to a few points in a tiebreak), but in the last year or so he's been so poor from the baseline it's beyond embarrassing.

Ward is not even that great from the baseline, and his movement is not his strong point, but every time Isner has to hit more than 2 groundstrokes in a rally he looks like a deer in the headlights.
I've been impressed with Ward's backhand today, it's been accurate, and a lot better than he normally hits it.

Kim...once again, you have no clue. being 6ft8 is a handicap...not an advantage!

It helps for the serve but in today's era where anything can be retrieved, it's a proper handicap as moving a 6'6" frame is terrible. Those guys are trying to win with short points.....not only FHs but volleys and FHs....unlike Nadal and Coric who only rely on big lungs.

Between natural big legs and unnatural big lungs I have chosen my side.

It's a handicap for rallying and on return games, but certainly not for serve.
God forbid we move to technology/surfaces where someone like Isner can serve their way to Grand Slam victories.

edit: Btw in my comment to NITB, I was specifically referring to serve (saying how margins are easier if you're taller), not shots in general

Serving is not as easy as some make it look, despite their height. I agree it may be boring to watch, but it's much more exciting to play short rallies than long ones. That's the heart of tennis.

What's your view on this, T?

The "beauty" of winning and losing (after Ward's 5 hour, 5 set victory):

Isner: "'It's brutal, I'm barely going to sleep tonight. It's awful. Mentally, I'm certainly a bit shaken.''

Murray:''Time to remove every item of clothing and run through the streets of Glasgow. Absolute farce from James Ward.'' Davis Cup 2015: Round One 2355573927

I take it that was a bet....

You might not like my answer. Like everything I guess it is a question of balance. Going to extremes, I preferred the Sving era than the lung busting one...for one reason: It simply involved less physicality, less doping but more skills. For me both can be boring if pushed to the extreme, but one is simply healthier. In the 90s there were huge servers as well....but those who were just that got found out by the business of tournaments.

Just looking at the Dubai or Shangai final....the difference in skills and talent is simply huge between Federer and Djoko...yet their matches are very close...and that to me shows something quite unfair.

Just look at the serving between those 2. With Hawk Eye it was very obvious that Federer could generate much better place serves than Djoko. Without using force, just timing and skills, Fed managed to find his way out of trouble.

If both were playing with natural gut, the difference is skills would show much more.
