ATP 250: Montpellier, Zagreb, Ecuator
I went to ATP website to check who is playing who in Davis Cup this weekend, only to discover that Davis Cup is being played in the first week of March and that three tournaments were already being underway!
ATP 25O Montpellier, indoor hard
Montpellier, one of the fastest-growing cities in France over the past 25 years, hosted its first ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in late October of 2010. The indoor hard court event, which had relocated from Lyon, was then played in 2012 in a multi-purpose venue called the ARENA, which has a total capacity of 14,000 and seating for 7,500 during the tournament.
Players: Monfils, Simon, Kohlschreiber, Gasquet, Paire, JJ, Istomin, Sousa, Brown (surprised Pouille is not playing)

ATP 250 Zagreb, indoor hard
The PBZ Zagreb Indoors is the first European stop on the ATP World Tour calendar. Croatians have enjoyed success in their capital city, beginning with Ivan Ljubicic's triumph at the inaugural event in 2006. He went on to runner-up efforts the following two years. Marin Cilic maintained Croatia's final streak as he won back-to-back titles in 2009-10, 2013-14 while Ivan Dodig lifted his first title in 2011.
Players: Karlovic, GG Lopez, Youzhny, Baghdatis, Troicki, Muller, Coric, Seppi, Granollers, Berankis

Order of Play http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2015/2276/op.pdf
ATP 250 Ecuator, outdoor clay
The Ecuador Open Quito is the first clay court tournament of the ATP World Tour season and also the opening leg of the five-tournament swing through Latin America, aptly coined the "Golden Swing".
Players: Nadal (kidding! ) F. Lopez, Verdasco, Lajovic, Zeballos, Bellucci, Klizan, Giraldo, Falla

Re: ATP 250: Montpellier, Zagreb, Ecuator
Tennis ball surely waits for nobody...
Except maybe for me as we have had first tiny snow in two years!
Funny how seeing it first thing in the morning when I open the curtains still excites me!
So I walked to my tennis club, happy to see no cars parked as I knew I was the first one there.
Just like two years ago, I had it all to myself: rolled around in it, enjoyed the tranquility and early morning bird song and then decided to serve one snow ball, hit one FH and one BH. Without the racquet, just the hand.
It was quite funny as I missed each first time and the snowballs didn't get very far.
Traditionally one snowball flew SW19 way...

Re: ATP 250: Montpellier, Zagreb, Ecuator
And Pouille wins in the TB, being down a mini-break.
Great serving, and FH looking as good as in OZ.
For a moment I was worried he got tight as he was just playing percentage tennis with it and when he must have realised it was getting him nowhere, so he started playing properly.
So, next for him is Gasquet! Oooo-la-laaaa!

T, do you know who Puille's coach is?
He is French, looks like a 70s rock guitarist, never heard of him!

Re: ATP 250: Montpellier, Zagreb, Ecuator
Thanks, T.
Just scanned the article, he looks like a nice guy, antii-Boletieri style, no wonder Pouille is such a happy, positive player.
Well, we'll see how he goes against Gasquet tomorrow!
The new promise versus the unfulfilled one.
I'll never forget that 5 setter Gasquet lost to Murray in Wimbledon in darkness.
Maybe it permanently changed his career. He was too nice.

Re: ATP 250: Montpellier, Zagreb, Ecuator
It certainly did not help his career. But Gasquet did not move on with teh tour. He needed to add many more muscles and lungs....and take the ball earlier. He has been a great disappointment.noleisthebest wrote:Thanks, T.

Re: ATP 250: Montpellier, Zagreb, Ecuator
Yes, that's such a shame.
He is a great player, but not enough an athlete.
I watched him practise with Tsonga in O2 2 years ago and seriously, he hits his FH better than Tsonga, more natural pace, less spin, not to memtion the BH.
Born in the wrong era, unfortunately.

So long as he doesn't get discouraged. Could work on serve variation.

Match of the Day:
Berankis-Muller
Paire played ok yesterday, was a bit unlucky to lose, there was no Hawkeye and linesmen were not doing a good job.
He is not as sharp as he was before his knee surgery, but is getting there.
Pouille was good, bearing in mind he does not have much competing experience, he's got the right attitude and good competitive spirit, just needs to keep working and persevere through this difficult transitional period.
Slow conditions are killing the new generation.

Yes, disappointed by Pouille result. It seems we are cursing every youngster we support (berankis, Gobulez, etc...). Pouille was often in trouble on his serve, his second serve in particular.
Still a close match. He was 4/2 up in the second, wasn't he?

I thought the same as I was typing Berankis's name...
Last time I saw him, he was muscling his groundstrokes...awful.
He's def "finished", just "going to work" now.
Same for so many: Strakh, Thiem, Berankis...it's a matter of time before Vesely joins the crew...
Only the ones with "teams" and muscles have been able to improve their rankings: Nishikori, Raonic, Dimitrov, though Nishi can thank his ball-striking talent more than anything.
Gulbis has hit the brick wall, too. It must be soul destroying for players like him.
Pouille really has all it takes to succeed, just needs a bit of luck to start winning.
Hopefully he gets a decent draw in Wimbledon (Nadal in R1? )
There is room for improvement in his game, yes, mainly on serve as he'll struggle against fit percentage grinders.
I don't know what to think any more...we have rocket serving giants, fit percentage baseliners with powerful racquets, not fit enough shot-makers...and young players without experience and a tall mountin to climb in more than one way.
Crazy...
