I'm happy with Nadal's tournament already, he's exceeded my expectations and showed what a true warrior he is, any wins from now is a bonus

Fed tweaked the back in Brisbane in the finals.. signs were pretty clear and he's been shaky for the start here...  It was a big mistake to play the EXo with Hewitt the next day after Brisbane too-  it was clear in the presser his body was hurting and he was overly tired.

I would have liked to see him go further and continue the amazing semi streak- but he wasn't going to win the tourney anyway.   Seppi played okay.. unlike Smy he didn't back down and didn't capitulate when faced with the realization that he might actually win.  He's too much of a pro for that.

Fed fought hard though.. that was clear to see and some of it was just bad luck. Seppi said he didn't even see the ball on match point- that he thought it was a clean winner from Fed and just stabbed into the air-  ball floated and clipped the line even though Fed was in the right position for the play.

The worst thing about this loss is we will now see Fed become more of a part time player.  He made it clear in nearly every interview this year that he was leaving he schedule open and would assess how much he wanted to play this year after the AO-  he said that if he was in contention for #1, then that would be incentive to keep the full schedule but otherwise he wanted to have some down time, practice more and play less tournies-- he even mentioned in one of his Swiss interviews this week- that we might see him only play half his usual tournies.

My feeling is he'll play enough to keep a top 4 seed while he can, but start to phase out.  Miami is definitely out and prob IW too.

Frankly- it's all about Wimbledon now which is a long way away to look forward too..

And even Wimby....he'll have no chance if he does not play more and fix his back. ....though I doubt his back can be fixed.

@truffin I hope this strategy doesn't backfire because he also said earlier that he feels he needs to keep a good rhythm of match play.

Miami is a no-brainer, was surprised he didn't scrap it last year, Montreal/Toronto as well, Bercy obviously, MC likely, that's already 4, Madrid/ Rome questionable. Cincinatti should be safe as well as IW and Shanghai (barring serious injury). TDs will feel ecstatic, I'm sure. Laugh

I hope he plays Halle though, already got 2nd row tickets.  Blush

I really hope Fed and his team are smart enough and take the right decision, which is, IMHO, to skip the rest of this HC season and resume at the clay season. Play a couple of masters 1000's on clay and RG. Then one tournament on grass and Wimbledon. By then, he'll have a better view on his ranking and how realistic the #1 spot is...

Dubai is in- he said that last night- then all else is open..   I think he will skip IW and Miami which he's been hinting at already.   Prob play Madrid and RG--   Rome if he's feeling good.

He said after 2012 run to #1 that he wanted 2013 to be a "transition" year with a cut back on the schedule- basically same thing he is saying now.  He thought longer training blocks and playing key tournies would keep him fresh and motivated.   Then 2013 came and he hurt his back early and created all kind of havoc as he couldn't train and so he just tried to play the full tournies to keep something going.    Then 2014 he had something to prove and all the success led to a lot of matches... so it looks like he's turning 2015 into what he wanted in 13.

It's a tough position to be in-  play more or same and run risk of fatigue and inability to recover, or don't play as much and run the risk of lost rhythm, less match tough,etc..     I guess we'll see :-) or :-(

Disappointing.  Fed played very poorly from the start, was in fact lucky to make it a close 4-setter.  Seppi was his usual self - he does everything ok but nothing great.  I thought he would be a very easy opponent for Federer.  The match started at 11pm my time and I was expecting I would go to bed at maybe 12:30am with Federer two sets and a break up.

But Fed was very poor right from the start - spraying it all over place.  His usually reliable 2nd serve was very unreliable - many double faults, quite a few at crucial moments.  He double faulted I think at 4:4 0-15 in the first, also at 4:4 I think in the fourth (?), and also in the 4th set TB.

Too bad, in the form he was in he did have a chance to win the title here - if starts aligned - and there will not be many more chances like that.  Also, this kills any hope of reclaiming #1 this spring.

I was really looking forward to an all-nighter Saturday night - with Rafa vs Anderson, Andy vs Dimi and Fed vs Kyrgios.

Smyczek just replied back to my private message to his Facebook page !!!!

I said he was a great role model and was wowed by his amazing performance as well as sportsmanship; he replied saying he appreciated my kind words and the support.

Well, within reason, let's not overdo it.

He played well, one of his better matches, but Federer was very poor.  I am not sure how much of the match you saw, but Fed had hard time keeping his groundies in play - especially on forehand he was leaking plenty of errors on simple rally shots.  Also, his service was very much subpar.

Sure, he could have still won if Seppi had not been able to take advantage of it, but it is not like Seppi came out firing and took it away from Fed - it was mostly Fed playing poorly and Seppi just taking advantage of that.  He did hit a fabulous passing shot on the last point though smiley

Amen to that. Seppi will most likely lose next round.

Nishi is a slow starter....but he does enough to tire the opposition in that first set making the remaining 3 pretty easy.

I believe that is how he got Djoko at the USO as well.

Leyton Hewitt was doing some commentating on Australian TV Friday night and said that Federer was dealing with "major back niggles" when they practiced together before Brisbane and also was still suffering when they played the EXO the day after Brisbane.   That and Stans interview about end of DC confirms the back issue is still there.

Went on to talk about his own struggles playing with chronic pain and said he thought it was something Fed would just tough out for the rest of his career, but lucky for Fed his best even with the pain was good enough to win another major.

thanks for the info Truffin. I am impressed how you get to find all those details.

He went most of 2014 without much trouble though I am pretty sure he was at pain at times. It's very easy to see with him. his game is so much better when he can move well but then suddenly he becomes way too human when his back is playing up.

It's amazing he can still play and get close matches with a hurting back....at this level.
