The draw looks balanced and I like it. Hopefully Nole and Fed will move from the groups from the first places to have another classic final.
Looking forward to matches between Fed and Murray and Nole with Stan in the groups.
Even seeing Milos in the picture is a frightening moment.

Fed's group looks very interesting.
There are going to be 3 great matches there:
Murray-Nishi
Fed-Nishi
Fed-Murray
Both Nishi and Murray will be tired, otherwise, I'd give Nishi the advantage.

Nole's group looks even more interesting, I have no idea who is going to come second there.
H2H
Stan-Berd 8:5
Cilic-Berd 4:5
Stan-Cilic 7:2
On paper it should be Stan.
But because all three have huge history of choking one never knows!

What was Stan's huge history of choking?

Re: ATP MASTERS: World Tour Finals, London 2014
Stan has always been a notorious choker when serving, he still is.
He does not have mental tenacity, folds when things don't go his way (read: misses a couple of FHs), loses matches he shouldn't - there is no other reason (we know he is not injured) for him to lose three first round matches in a row, and then the fourth one in the second round (Paris).
He is a defending AO champion for crying out loud.
Last year at the WTF, he had Nadal on the ropes and blew it away in style.
Cilic is the same.
I am surprised you haven't noticed it.

I don't see it as a huge history of choking. He won't be up there chokers wise.
You've said a few matches.
So many "choke" against Nadal, an extremely difficult player to put away. Does that make them all chokers?

Re: ATP MASTERS: World Tour Finals, London 2014
I disagree.
Choker is anyone who plays below their ability, lets his mind/fear/emotions take over.
That's why belief is so important.
Some believe in their talent, some in their stamina, some fitness...whatever keeps you competing to the best of your ability in a match.
It's not easy.

SO when Feds plays below his ability to constantly get mauled by Nadal, or Djoko with his double faults vs rafa at ROme, RG etc.
Is they chokers?
Is they chokers?

Re: ATP MASTERS: World Tour Finals, London 2014
I almost never watch Fedal matches so can't comment on those.
The one I did see (WTF 2010 final), Fed won in style.
As for Nole, I don't think he chokes against Nadal. Double faults in his case are most often a result of a long rally that preceded it.
After watching this year's RG final live, I have been able to fully grasp the level and enormity of Nadal's physicality, much worse than on TV.
It is absolutely and relentlessly brutal. Illegally, of course.
I have just come back from playing a doubles match where my partner was engaged in a long rally (probably about 18 CC shots).
We won that point but lost the very next one because he double faulted.

We have got just two days left...so I've added the poll.
I voted for Nole as he is the freshest and very motivated.
I hope both him and Fed top their group.
I have seen two of their matches live in O2 and Nole won both. The court suits him better, though Fed if fresh would have a 50/50 chance.

Fed has a good chance, but 2010 video isn't relevant since this is 2014. Fed is 33 now, not 29.

Re: ATP MASTERS: World Tour Finals, London 2014
Ooooh, let the fan wars begin!!!
You know I don't mind your boy thrashing my boy.
I love their matches, but only when both play well and are fresh.
The Shanghai one was awesome.
Fed was electric.
But Nole can dig his heel in, too, in his own way of course...so much more fun that Fedal.
I am genuinely equally happy for either to win.
They have produced some of my favourite tennis moments.
Nole has missed out & suffered so much because of Fedal and Nadal.
I was thinking about him yesterday as I was reading an article...he didn't use to be so emotionally vocal, tearing tops etc early on...the pain must have been building over the years, all the injustices, rigged draws etc...right down to testing him for 5 hours during his Davis Cup final match!!!
Can you imagine it happen to Fed now in DC final?
Or Nadal?

Re: ATP MASTERS: World Tour Finals, London 2014
Federer...just because I want him to win.
I am aware that he really struggles lining the matches one after the other. In that respect he is quite different from a Ferrer for instance who is of the same age and seems to be running even more.
I am pretty convinced he refuses to take anything which coudl be borderline to recover like most do from a previous match.
He has shown a good run in Montreal Cincy but if I remember he was helped by a fast surface and short rallies. Not teh case in London or against roadrunners.

I also think part of the problem is the energy he loses hitting all those SBHs.
I can only begin to imagine what it must feel like to hit 3-4 SBHs (a conservative average) per rally, all fending off very powerful CC FH shots.

I am a bit worried that we will see already a semi between Nole and Fed. Here I believe in a good form playing Nole, who likes the surface in O2. But then hopefully we will not see Nole with "sm" Murray in the final.

Murray-Fed match will be interesting, esp how the O2 crowd receives the post-referendum Andy...
Fed's always had a min. 50% support in London.

As my tennis-nut bedtime reading, I just had a quick look at some last minite WTF hype on the ATP website and ended up in the ATP online shop
If you scroll down, you get to see Fed's, Nadal's, Nole's, Murray's and Ferrer's (technical) gear.
I thought the choice of strings for top plyers was very interesting...esp Nole's and Fed's.
I was surprised to see modern technology is going back to natural gut (hybrids).

I must say Nadal's latest kit he wore this autumn really does look horrible, it's like when you put a t-shirt in the washing machine too frequently and the colours start to fade.

Federer has been hybrid since 2002...before he was 100% gut.
Djoko changed quite recently he was full technifibre before...with funny string shape increasin spin a lot.
Fed is as far as I know the only player having guts in the mains and Luxi in the crosses. All other players doing hybrid do the other way around. The result is has the racquet with most feel.

Are they those shiny octagonal or stb black strings? I saw them, they look strange, amazing what kind of variety is allowed in competition.

Yes Luxilon does some too. They have a pentagonal (Luxilon technifibre) or Hexgonal (Babolat) traversal shape. When you run your fingers through them you really feel it's very grippy.

Re: ATP MASTERS: World Tour Finals, London 2014
Yes, a few people have those strings in our club, and a ridiculous light frame to accompany them.
And they don't last long, either...look like frayed thick cotton thread after some time.
I just don't get those people... why they are so obsessed with spin.
It's so much nicer and natural to strike the ball relatively flat.
At least on a club level!

Only got to see a couple of points between Nishi and Murray, Nishi looked in complete control dominating the centre of baseline, playing on his own terms, striking the ball beautifully, pushing Murray 4m behind the baseline and making him look slow and heavy.
Raonic looking like a complete moron jumping during the coin toss.
Go on Roger, tear him apart!

Great first evening match for this year's WTF.
Fed was so smooth, despite the short lapses of tiredness.
Poor Milos...I am glad the crowd gave him a big cheer and clap as he was leaving, it meant so much to him.
Tennis nation in O2 really rocks!!!

Order of play out for Tuesday, Nishi-Fed playing the afternoon and Murray-Raonic the evening session.
That almost guarantees the Murray-Fed Thursday afternoon match and it will be a must win for Murray and that will be the match to wipe Fed out (provided Fed & Murray win tomorrow).
He may want to tank it depending on how Nole's half group goes, but I'd assume Nole will top his group and Fed will want to avoid him in the semis at all cost.

Actually, If I were Fed, I'd rather play Nole in the semi.
1 - He will be fresher than in the final.
2 - If Fed wants to end up number one...Djoko needs to be stopped in th esemi...or before actually. (not sure what are the math on that).

It was interesting to read Fed's comparing his rivalry with Nole & Nadal.
One sentence stood out: he played most of his matches against Nole in the semi-finals.
I think they all know it
