Should Best Of Five Format Be Scrapped?
We are witnessing an extremely physical era of tennis, where players expend huge amount of energy in every match.
Whether they do it through spinning the ball or having to deal with it, today's game is taking its toll fast.
The game has become brutal.
Last USO was a perfect example:
Cilic won it largely due to the luck of draw.
Federer played a very exhausting 5 set match against Monfils and simply could not recover and be fresh for the next match.
Same happened with Djokovic who lost to Nishikori after a gruelling match with Murray....and to Nishikori who fought with Djokovic and then was a shadow of himself in the final.
Aaaah! but shouldn't the players be good enough to beat an opponent in 3 sets I hear you ask?
Yes, but it's getting very difficult in these slow conditions when many have mastered the strings and conditions: the tour is both ageing and solidifying and more and more lower ranked players win creating "upsets".
5 setters used to provide wonderful battles in the past, and even now are almost always a guarantee of high drama, but I fear they are preventing best players from winning and encouraging even more ridiculous levels if fitness.
So who is benefitting from the best of 5 now?
Should only finals be played in that format?

I guess that's what needs to be changed first of all.
I like 5 setters. Just a bit more speed should be ok.
Imagine if Fed can win going to the net more often....the 5 setter becomes a great advantage over those rallying. Problem is that only him has the talent to beat the most physical players goig to the net.

Re: Should Best Of Five Format Be Scrapped?
Yes, I did notice a bit of paradox this year: in the middle of slow high bouncing era of, big and light equally jumpy balls, ALL players are now trying to attack more, and it's interesting to see how they all go about it according to their ability.
That's all fine, but more players are geting serious injuries as there is only so far one can push their body. Especially younger ones.
Something has to change and ATP & ITF are doing nothing.
TDs only care about profit.
I am sure many players want faster conditions, I liked how Brisbane played this year.
Fed's newest game would be an advantage, but in a slam, i.e. best of 5 average players can now drain anybody.
We'll see how things go in AO next year.

yes having said that to attack one needs to be sharp and being sharp for 3 to 5 sets is really tough. So certainly slams still favour the fitness player.
Though I think you are overlooking Cilic's skills. He played really well in that semi v Fed.
