Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
I saw a few games here and there, including the shocker from Stan.
He was pathetic.
Just doesn't seem to be able to pull himself together when things are not going his way.
That Ito was embarrassingly average, in fact - a very light version of Ferrer.
I saw a bit of Nole, who was OK.
The courts are really slow.
I also saw Dolgo lose, I think he was injured, but despite it all enjoyed his tennis very much.
Happy Gulbis is through.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Had a quick glance at Nole-Pospisil, they are playing under closed roof because of rain and it looks like a steam house in there!
The court is so slow.
The scheduled Murray-Cilic match should be very interesting tomorrow.
For the first time after many years we are looking at some fresh names at the WTF.
I would love to see Earnie and Nish qualify!

If Gojo ressurects his first serve he could trouble Nadal in the 2nd set.
Nadal now doing the full body touching routine even when RECEIVING!!!!!!!

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
In the meantime Gojo has meekly turned into a B grade hitting partner...I wonder who picked Nadal's draw this time Toni or Rafa.
After seeing Chardy live in Wimbledon, I am beginning to think he would have been better off with a SBH.
He has a first class FH and a beautiful BH slice.
And a good serve to help him along the way.
Watching him against Anderson now reconfirms that.
Unfortunately, it seems like the the French are now supporting DBH like the Brits.
I am glad Gasquet persevered.
But with him, it looks as if he cultivated that shot to the extent of neglecting his FH.
He is able to generate easy power on it, but keeps playing it so conservatively. Imagine if he started taking it early like Nishi.
Or at least rethink it like Stan. It's still not too late.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Nadal is complaining about the balls in Beijing:
"The ball is so bad here. If you throw the ball on the floor, the bounce goes everywhere. It's just that we're competing at the top level of our sport, tennis, and the ball is an important thing.
This week we are playing with one ball. Next week we are playing with a different ball. That's dangerous for the shoulder, dangerous for the elbow."
Comes back from 6 months of no tournaments and moans about different balls...to what, Wimbledon?
I really can't wait for him to retire!
Or get trounced.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Some good matches tomorrow!
In Beijing:
Djokovic-Dimitrov (6 am uk time)
Murray-Cilic (about 9 am)
& in Tokyo
Chardy-Nishikori
The tricker one to call definitely Murray-Cilic.
Whoever comes out in that SF will be physically wiped-out for the final.

Yes it is slow but Cilic failed to convert around 8 game points and 6 were on his own serve!!!..losing even a game from 40/0 up.

I am not surprised. The conditions are so slow. It must be demoralising to play on them against a road-runner.

But I think the state of mind of what he needs to do to win a point in that slow court is affecting his confidence.
He is going for the lines but not full-on like in USO, and the balls are coming back.

I suppose Cilic's lack of game is being quite exposed here. He hasn't done well on clay, has he?
It's ridiculous to watch him try and win points by rallying, a 2m tall guy!

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Murray's yelling is reaching new "heights".
4:4.
Cilic finally looking a bit more relaxed.
Time to show he has overcome the choking phase of career, serving to stay in thematch.
Anyone remember USO 2012 when he had a set and 5:1 against Murray and still managed to lose...?

Yes Nitb, I remember that Cilic's choking quite well, very memorable.
Very curious about their match today. I am going to check the score, unfortunately I must work on year-end closure and have not much time on my hands

Nole is somewhere else than Dimi. I have a feeling that Nole plays his best tennis when Nadal is in a draw.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Yes, Paul, Nole is a better and a more intelligent player than Dimi, especially in these conditions.
I said many times before Dimi is playing a DBH-er's game with the SBH and it's hard for him to win consistenly like that, he is a good player and could maybe do better with a different coach.
The thing is though, he simply is not talented enough to play aggressively like Federer, so he has probably reached his maximum atm.

It looks that our BIG 4 kicked in again, a good win for Murray. That is also a question whether new GS winners can go on on a good wave. It looks that both new GS champions 2014 are not able to keep their form for a long time. That is the toughest part of being a champion.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Unless Klizan performs a miracle, it looks like we'll have Nole-Murray and Nadal-Berd SFs.
I have only seen a few points from the "comeback" Nadal but it seems the long absence has not affected him at all.
I really thought he was going to skip the rest of season, but it looks now he wants to have another go at winning the WTF and the opportunist he is he'll have Federer and Stan possibly sparing themselves physically for Davis Cup final (like Nole did in 2010), Nole who will by then be a month old dad (and we all know how emotional he is), Murray is yet to qualify...and the rest...can we see them as a real threat in O2?
My only hope is the knowledge Nole wants to keep his number one, he said that was the only reason for him doing the Asian tour this year, his words were: "I am defending my number one in Beijing".

I've just tuned in, 3:3, Nadal serving and Klizan really taking it to him.
Go Martin!

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Impressed with Klizan's perseverance.
A TB set (which he choked away on his serve), and a break down, he is still engaged full-on.
Many better ranked players would have folded long ago.
If only more of them had Nole's RG 2006"Nadal is beatable" attitude, he would have not got away with so many titles.
Even if he wins this match today, he won't be that fresh tomorrow.
And as I am typing this Klizan breaks back 4 all !

Klizan holds his serve to love, 5:4. Hopefully will be more relaxed on Nadal's serve than his own one a set ago.
It's amazing what sort of hard hitting, line-painting ball-striking it took him to claw his way back.
He definitely deserves the 3rd set.

Best of all is that Nadal played his 110% tennis on a slow court, and still lost.
This should send a message out to the rest of the field.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
I don't think Nadal ran out of steam.
The fact Klizan made him run and hit the ball as hard as Nadal (minus the ridiculous power-spin) shot after shot without relenting was the key.
So far, only Nole was able to do it consistently.
With Klizan, it helped he is a lefty, esp on the FH.
It all reminded me a little of Rosol performance: there were stretches of red-line low percentage tennis: simple, solid game, hard hitting, which Federer and quite a few other players would have no problem dealing with, for example.
Nadal often wins by calling his opponents' bluff. Not today. Physically, he could have lasted easy two more sets.

Re: ATP 500 Beijing and Tokyo
Nadal was hitting the ball as hard as he could right to the bitter end.
He was not trying to shorten rallies at all.
Just that the ball was coming back at him hard and with great precision.
It was interesting to observe that he played a bit on the baseline and flattened both the FH and BH (but only compared to his own ridiculous spin standard) the BH looked good, but again, with him, it's not loose ball-striking, so no variety, just the drilled, safe CC.
I am very happy the umpire had the guts to penalise him for time violation when he was serving 30:40 at 4:5, 2nd set.
Had that not happened (as was the case for the last 10 years) he could have won the match in two sets.
I hope Damien Steiner does not suffer because of his courage as I am sure Nadal and his camp will (behind the scenes, of course) put a lot of pressure on ATP because of what happened.

Just saw Nole-Dimi highlights and was nicely surprised how very relaxed in the forecourt & at the net Nole was.
I like that development, though I doubt he'll get a chance to be playful against Murray.
Hope I wake up on time.
