Matches for today:

1. Belinda Bencic (SUI) [33]
vs.
Shuai Peng (CHN) [33]

The match of the unseeded. Its a toss up completely.

2. Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) [20]
vs.
Gael Monfils (FRA) [33]

Monfils is so unpredictable, I just don't know which version will show up. Dimi can handle him.

3. Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) [33]
vs.
Roger Federer (SUI) [18]

The first meeting.

4. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) [30]
vs.
Sara Errani (ITA) [33]

Be ready to run run.. and run

5. Marin Cilic (CRO) [21]
vs.
Gilles Simon (FRA) [33]

Simon played great, but I don't he has enough to beat an inform Cilic.

6. Tomas Berdych (CZE) [6]
vs.
Dominic Thiem (AUT) [33]

Berdych is likely to be too strong for Thiem who has been playing doubles too.

so Mypicks:

1. Shui Peng
2. Gael Monfils JOKER
3. Roger Federer
4. Caroline Wozniacki
5. Cilic
6. Berdych

US Open 2014: MOTD Day 9 Tue 2/09/2014 Empty Re: US Open 2014: MOTD Day 9 Tue 2/09/2014

Great to see Simon and Monf in week 2, I think they both have a good chance to win today.

Monf seems to be loving his NY existence and crowd is loving him back, that should be enough to energise him and keep him focused.
His athleticism will be a big advantage as everything Dimi can do, Monf can do better.

Simon is just getting better and better as he seems to have filled out a bit so his shots have more weight and he goes for them now.
He has always been a great to watch, a smart, elegant, chess-player kind of  counter-puncher, just what's needed to absorb and dismantle Cilic's straightforward power.

Fed -Agut should be super, too.
Gutty is a nice all court player, but too light weight for this era, so for me a much more watchable version of Ferrer.
He is an excellent competitor and will draw the best out of Fed without  being physical.

Thiem-Berd should be interesting, I'haven't seen Berd play, but Thiem seems on a roll, confident on his FH and driving inside the court all the time, very curious to see how that works out against Berd's baseline projectiles.

I saw Wozniacki dispatch Sharapova the other day, oooh, that was a women's match alright, so much cattiness, Sharapova nearly imploded
when Wozniacki won a long point after she netted a volley being made to run a lot...and then to add salt to the wound, Wozniacki celebrated by raising her arms and asking crowd to cheer her!

Sharapova's incinerating eyes were a picture...

I am no fan of Wozniacki, but absolutely cannot stand Errani, so really hope she thrashes her!

Yes Nitb,  I do have the same opinion on these she-wolves. Neither I can stand Errani and Shara is about the same, but at least Shara's hyper aggresssive tennis is  watchable even with her fiery stare and comical antics on the court.

Wozzie surprised me by her game approach  change. She finally showed that  she can also push her opponent on the court as well and what I can really appreciate she doesn't make a noise on the court Big Grin

1. Belinda Bencic (SUI) [33] - just a hunch, haven't seen either player.

2. Gael Monfils (FRA) [33] (joker) - Monfils looked more convincing to me and I doubt, Dimi can grind him down like he did Goffin.

3. Roger Federer (SUI) [18] - RBA doesn't look like a player who can endanger a decent Fed to me.

4. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) [30] - Wozniacki showed her usual consistency, a bit more aggressive though and I doubt that Errani can grind her down

5. Gilles Simon (FRA) [33] - I believe Simon has the perfect game to absorb Cilic power. Cilic has never won vs. Simon too. Question mark for me is how Simon recovered from the Ferrer match, Ferrer was more tired, but Simon not looking fresh either.

6. Dominic Thiem (AUT) [33] - Berdych is of course the favourite and I believe he will win and likely in straights, but go Thiem!!!!

Sharapova should smack Dimi's face from time to time Cool, she must be a bigg  boss for him. He is not only childish by his look, but his game is also desperately naive.

I do not believe it.  Christmas comes early for Fed with Dimi out (although Mon is no walk over!).  He was a real loose cannon.  And in 3 sets too.  Dimi still not quite there, but I'm pretty sure he will do within the next 2 years.

I really don;t think Dimi woudl have troubled Fed.....especially if he coudl not trouble an yunder par Monfils!

As for Dimi & Raonic - both are over-hyped.
Dimi is weaponless and Raonic can only serve.

It's all match ups and Dimi may have played far better in the next round.  It's luckier for Fed that he is out, because overall, he is a bigger threat, better player (look at his ranking), and will one day be winning Slams.  I'd rather Fed play Mon.

Dimitrov is not "over hyped", he is coming into his prime years and will win Slams.  If he doesn't, perhaps then the claim can be made.  But for now, he has a massive potential.  He only just missed out on a Wimbledon final. At 23, time is on his side.

JJ is also 23, has Wimbledon semi-final, plus a masters 1000 final, but no big sponsors and big girlfriends to push him.
I think someone else will turn up and win slams, and Dimi & Raonic will be just be solid top tenners.
Tbh, I hope someone else turns up, Raonic and Dimi really lack spark and charisma.

Dimi is not that bad, but something is missing in his package.

Possible but Dimitrov will not trouble a healthy and fit Federer. He may have troubled Nadal or Djokovic but Fed is a different kind of player as we all know. I can draw parallels the way Gasquet will not trouble Fed.

@ It's luckier for Fed that he is out, because overall, he is a bigger threat, better player (look at his ranking)

Luckier? I don't know. Rankings is one thing but uncertainty of Monfils is more dangerous than Dimi's clear readable game. Some players are dangerous floaters, despite their rankings and inconsistent game, on a given day, they can take out anyone. Dimi is not that player, Monf could be.

@ Dimitrov is not "over hyped", he is coming into his prime years and will win Slams.

I agree he is coming into his prime years, and perhaps may win slams too. But he is not going to be dominant player.

Time is sure on his side, but I wouldn't be celebrating his SLam success if he goes on to collect them when everyone else has retired.

I'd say the draw has been as kind as it could be for Fed this time.  Having Monfils in the quarter and then Berdych/Cilic in the semi was about the best he could ask for.  If it's Cilic, it's a real bonus.  The top half is loaded and they may all wear each other out...

This is looking very nice for Fed... but he has to take it with both hands now!

He himself has acknowledged the sudden lapses in focus in his matches. It happens to everyone especially for someone like Fed who has been on tour for so long and has won so much.

Cilic managed to come through a tough test here, his first win ever vs. Simon.  Applause I expected his level to drop after the lost fourth set due to fatigue like it did in their matches before this, but this time it was Simon who hit the ceiling. I must wonder though whether he has what it takes to take out Berdych in the QF. I certainly hope so.

Berdych with the expected easy victory; didn't see it, but I expected him to run low on fuel after his duel with Gulbis. Should have lost that one already, really. Gulbis would have given Berdych more of a fight, now his draw to the QF looks like a joke; didn't need to play even one seed.

Fed looked very special until 5-1, minor blips after that; might be, because the result was never in doubt, Bautista-Agut way outclassed there. Hope, his serve improves though, hasn't impressed me much so far at the USO.

Dimitrov-Monfils - entertaining match with flashy shots, but I still don't get what his fans see in Dimitrov and why he would pose a threat to Fed? US Open 2014: MOTD Day 9 Tue 2/09/2014 759076010 I don't see it. He doesn't look like a multi-slam-winner to me. Monfils with his supreme athleticism and defensive, exhausting, good return game might be the bigger threat. What was going on with him there, btw? He acted like he could drop dead from fatigue at any moment and then sprinted after the balls.

Anyone seen the hair of the Chinese woman?  Yikes She missed drug tests in 2008. Now she is in her first ever GS SF at age 28?  US Open 2014: MOTD Day 9 Tue 2/09/2014 759076010

Missing, failing, passing, refusing tests...makes no difference.
Cilic, Berdych, Stan, Chinese woman, American women. Seniors, juniors...All of them. Not just "the road-runners".
Competition has become too physical for "clean" and "whiter than white" image. I suppose it's just a matter of keeping it all under control and not damaging the business for those who run it which is why the big fish never gets caught.
In their minds and consciences it's food supplements. It's vitamins.
It's just the matter of being able to afford the best doctors that makes the difference now.
Where there is money to be made, there is cheating. They are all in love with it. If they weren't they'd speak out.
Even where there is no money to be made, in fact.

For me, it's a dead topic until the big name gets caught AND REVEALED.
But even then, like it's been in cycling after the downfall of Lance Armstrong, I don't think anything will change.

Oh come on.. just one tournament where a player does well and the questions raised for dope? Have you not seen how the draw had opened on the women's side with almost all top seeds losing out early?

Its not like a player can only do well late in career when on dope. Its just one tournament, Shuai Peng has been a consistent player for a long time. Nothing great, but consistent.

I m not sure who of the 2 is the more dangerous player for Federer?

Shot wise..Murray for sure....but stamina wise...Djoko! whoever Federer might face, it is going to be a tall order.

@ Rotla, I don't doubt a player can do well late in their career, if they show early promise that they may be slam winning material. Even if they show nothing really great, I wouldn't say a thing if that's the only peculiarity. But when I watched that match, I couldn't help, but see her scalp, which is pretty unusual to say the least for a woman of 28.

So I checked her records and lo and behold I found the piece of news about her missed drug test.
