Masters 1000: Toronto
ATP 250/500 scenic route along the B roads has come to an end.
The Show is now hitting the concrete motorways of American hard courts, starting with two back to back Masters 1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati and ending with the last slam in USO.
As things stand, Nadal is the only top 10 player not taking part.
ATP 1000 Toronto, Rogers Cup, outdoor hard
Since 1881, the best players in the world have showcased their skills on Canadian courts. Only Wimbledon and the U.S. Open have longer histories than this important Tour event. Every year, Montreal and Toronto share the task of hosting, in alternation, the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, one of two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments held in August during the Emirates U.S. Open Series. The impressive list of past champions for this Canadian stop bear such legendary names as Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic.

For some strange reason, Federer is seeded third behind Wawrinka.

Here's the draw!
http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2014/421/mds.pdf
Feds seeded no2.
Quite a lot of tough first matches for the big guns.
Murray in Djoko's quarter, Dimi in Stan's, Raonic in Berdych's & Ferrer in Feds.

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
Bonjour from NITB
Just about to go to the beach after a long coffee on the balcony overlooking the sea and the exquisite Mediterranean flora.
Tough life, but someone's got to do it and it's finally my turn
Strangely, wi-fi this year seems to be struggling with streaming, so I may not be able to see (m)any matches, but I think I'll survive
Hope we have two good weeks of tennis.

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
Just saw the last few games of Kurgyos - Giraldo.
What an exciting player!
Excellent ball-striking, easy power, huge persona, entertainer, big game, plays effortlessly...what's there not to like!
Next Murray, should be really good!
Nice matches tonight, esp Paire - Stan. Fed on, too.
Paire beat Stan in round one in Montreal last year, btw, ALLEZ

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
So sad Paire lost
It must have been a great match as it went to 3rd set TB.
Apparently Paire even had a MP...
He so needed a good win, but hopefully this match will have encouraged him to keep going, so hard when you lose your ranking after injury.
I saw one game of Fed-Polansky...my oh my...THAT FH is back with a vengeance!
And not just the FH, but serve as well. He surely has been busy since Wimbledon.
Hard to gauge how much Polansky contributed to his own demolition, but a good win like this can't do any harm, can it?
Some super matches today, and thankfully not at 3 AM!!!
First Murray-Kyrgios, then Nole-Monfils!
I read that Murray has now completely recovered from his back injury and has been able to "train" 100% percent.
He'll need every bit of his fitness to chase Kirgy's bombs...really look forward to it.
Order of play is full of good matches in fact, these 1000 masters are pretty good like that as they cut out the first two rounds of slams and you get instant first-class matches from the word go.

It was a good match, with moments of brilliance and some very silly errors in between. Both players had their chances to win, Stan just a tad more solid towards the end of the match. I was surprised how well he played the 3rd set TB, very unlikely himself.

Very well played by Paire, a lot of points won at the net and some smart S&V on important occasions. Before the start of the 3rd set TB, it was totally anyone's match.

Yes...managed to catch the last two games: that was a welcome to the land of slog, graft and grinding lesson from Murray, and Kurgy fell for it.
No first serve, too proud to bide his time, played like a vain teenager who didn't want to lose his face but kept digging himself deeper and deeper as the aggression didn't work...at least he saw where he's at.
Hope it doesn't discourage him.
Time to land and regroup.

Caught the end of the 2nd Set of Nole-Monf...what a strange TB!
Monfils is really fun to watch. He seems to be bored when playing, just like Dolgo and then goes for some ultra crazy shots of touch and flair...

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
That was a vintage Nole-Monf...tight-rope drama with Nole gritting it out in the end.
I enjoyed the 12th game of the last set, esp Nole's FH for 30:30, that's was gutsy and won him the match.
Shame Monf had such tough draw...but again, he just loves to play, counter-punch and waste energy...maybe that's the way he thinks he can beat Nole. Was close as always but their 10:0 H2H suggests he needs to change something.
Nole's draw is horrendous...
Looks like being number one makes no difference, even the umpire was biased. I think ITF is still on his back for supporting Troicki vocally. Good on him!
Much better than "being happy for Nadal to win 9 RGs"....

I only saw the last 3 games and Nole was terrible. His BH was very dodgy even against Monfils yesterday.
It wouldn't surprise me if he tanked it as he is keen on winning Cincy next week.
That's his only missing Masters 1000 and would make history by being the only player with all 1000s.
Happy for Tsonga, though, he needed a big win as he's been struggling for the last two years. I hope he makes it to the final.
As for Nole, I didn't think he played defensively in Wimbledon final (yet to see the 4th and 5th sets), at least for his standards.
Difficult to judge Toronto, Cincy will give a better idea. Conditions are becoming suffocating to play in.
Some players can take off two weeks and get hormone growth therapy allowance to "treat" their fictional injuries, some get tested 5 hours in the middle of a DC match.

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
From Fed's post-match interview yesterday:
"Q. What's the one you're most proud of?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't know. I mean, for me maybe becoming world No. 1, you know, or winning Wimbledon probably, something like that. Just making it on the tour overall.
It was not like a goal for me. It was more like a dream, you know. So, anyway, so much more than I ever thought it would be. I always say that. I know it's a boring answer but it really is the case.
Just want you people to understand that, that one tournament more or less at this point doesn't change much, but it's in the emotions and in the grind or in the enjoyment or in the way that I play that I really can actually enjoy it out there.
So for me probably becoming world No. 1 in 2004 or winning Wimbledon 2003 was one of my biggest moments."
http://www.rogerscup.com/men/interviews/2014/R._Federer_07.08.14.doc
Those who don't understand and love the play will unfortunately never get it....it's their loss, and quite a big one.

I am not sure it was that bad at the beginning but for sure he learnt his mistakes from the retrievers! ..And it works as he has never been ranked that high...but I think with this game he won't get much further unless he starts to be confident and go for sharper shots.

I can't imagine Dimi going for sharper shots.
I don't know what it is, must be the strings, but because of all this spin you can barely see proper drilling shots.
Stan can really get hold of the ball, but Kevin suffocated him with percentage tennis yesterday, though I only saw two games.

Not seen that, but we've seen countless number of absolutely ridiculous line calls. I do think linesmen do get affected by the crowd, the noise and even their personal liking for a player.

Player's don't get better as they age past 29. No player ever has. Has a player even won a slam at 33 in the modern era?
And actually, I'd say the Federer above has better movement, for sure. Forehand looks more deadly too.

I think Fed was definitely better earlier in a lot of aspects. He has become better in other things, but overall he was better in 2004-07 era.
He was faster, definitely faster than he has been in recent times. He has lost lot of foot-speed, I see it especially when he is running on his FH side in defense.
He was an "acer" earlier, brilliant at serve almost at par with the Tall-giant serving machines. He has lost lots of pace on serve, especially down-the-T. This is the big one for me. But I also believe that with so many years on circuit he just has become more "readable" about his serving direction. Players of 5-6+ years younger than him definitely read his serve direction better than those his age or older. Happens to everyone given how much study the whole team of coaches/staff etc is doing on the top players.
He has lots power on BH wing. Rarely you'll see a sucecssful BHDTL shot now. But he was so able to change the direction of the ball. Slow courts now? True but even on clay he was so much better on the BH.

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
Exactly. I agree with the serve being far more inconsistent now too. Today, you just wait for it to disappear for an entire game. A few years ago, Djokovic would have been toast at Wimbledon, but this year, Federer's serve just disappeared completely and for no reason. That's why he lost. Age ruins consistency. People are seeing Federer play one shot of old and then making the mistake that this is what he did in his prime. He didn't. He was hitting winners left right and centre.

Re: Masters 1000: Toronto
Serve up the T certainly lost lots of MPH and accuracy post 2008...
this scheduling Fed was saddled with in order to fill the stands for the night match is killing his chances. Thank goodness the draw opened up for him. He was visibly fatigued last night, now if he wins tonight, has to turn around in around 13 hours and play a much younger player on nearly a full day rest... really unfair the way this td laid things out.
