Serve net call being dropped

Post by Tenez on Sat Aug 09, 2014 12:31 am

I heard the commentators mentioning that net calls on serve would be treated like a net call during play (after serve), Is that true? And what is alarming is that they seem all so keen to the new rule change.

Their argument is "what is the difference between a net in serve and net while rallying?

Well the difference is obvious isn't it? On the serve a player hits a static ball while rallying the player hits a fast moving ball.

"So what?" you may ask? Well, while hitting a static ball, a player has a chance to be 100 times more precise with his shots (serve here), meaning he is going to try to hit close to lines and net, meaning the number of net calls are much more frequent in serves than in rallies despite having many more rallies than serves.

By changing the existing rule, chance will simply have a bigger role than before. Considering matches are sorted by a point there and then I think this is a really stupid decision by the ITF and all commentators who back it up.

The only upside about this rule is that it will make the game faster and more exiting for some as the winner might be the worse player more frequently than now.

I can only think they are considering this new rule cause "some" are taking so much time between points, especially between first and second serve that it makes the game painful to watch.....but again, instead of curing the cause we hide the symptoms.

If they change that rule, they are stupid.  If anything they need to stop net cords in play as well as on serve.  But definitely NO to adding luck to the game.  One of the reasons snooker is so broken is because of the fantastic amount of luck it has... that is not addressed in ANY way by the rules.

I am already being robbed of far too many points by my cousin simply because he is taller and hitting down.  If the serve was changed, he'd get a ton of lucky net cords on those too! And they would be 100% impossible to return.

yes they made the mistake a few years to widen the pockets to increase the number of big breaks. But that was a mistake as it certainly increased the luck...and killed the fun cause what is fun in snooker and the pressure under difficult pot and the twists within a frame. Once we have watched 2 centuries in a row it gets boring.

You have not sorted your cousin's advantage yet? Winking

I told you being shorter you advantage is get to more balls than him and make him run. This is why Ferrer, Chang, etc....were that good though and why tall players always struggled in the past before drugs gave them pairs of F1 wheels.

I agree. No need to end lets calls. There are other things that need to be addressed before that.

And I don't see any reason to do it anyway, strange...what do they want to achieve, slow the servers? maybe they can't slow courts and balls any more like they did with the grass in Wimbledon.
It's a bit crazy as they should be thinking in the opposite direction.

It's dangerous to allow technology to dictate and change rules, very disappointing.
I wonder who's behind it...

IT has nothing to do with drugs.  Ferrer doesn't win because he is at a disadvantage these days, especially on serve.  From which being tall is essential.

I've heard from tennis commentators talk about "No Let" on serve in some American University level matches. This proposed change could inspired by that. Also saving cost by removing the net-cord machine  Doh .
