ATP 500/250: Hamburg, Bogota
Did you know that we have already had 40 tournaments this year and that there are only 23 left?
Well... only two this week, this in-between, post-Wimbledon vacuum week, both on clay in Hamburg and Bogota.
Poor, old Hamburg...it used to be such a nice tournament back in the day when it was played in May. Anyone remembers the 2008 edition?
I have no idea why it has lost its prestigious slot in the spring pre-RG schedule, but there it is...still a 500 event.
ATP 500 Hamburg, clay
The bet-at-home Open welcomes 48 top singles players and 16 doubles teams to the summer clay-court event as one of the 11 ATP World Tour 500 stops. The tournament is held in the heart of Hamburg at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center, which features a retractable roof stadium seating 13,200 spectators – making it the largest centre court in Germany.
Players: Gerrer, Agut, Dolgopolov, Paire, Simon, JJ, Fognini, GG lopez, F, Lopez, Kohlschreiber, Golubev,Thiem, Vesely

ATP 250 Bogota, clay
The ATP World Tour returned to Bogotá, Colombia, in 2013, following the ATP Board of Directors’ approval of the sale of the Los Angeles tournament, an ATP World Tour 250 event, to IMLA de Colombia, a Colombian entertainment and sports marketing company. The Claro Open Colombia is staged at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Bogotá, the same venue that hosted an ATP World Tour event from 1997–2002. Ivo Karlovic won the inaugural edition.
Players: Gasquet, Stepanek, Karlovic, Falla, Pospisil, Mannarino, Tomic

Re: ATP 500/250: Hamburg, Bogota
And yesss!!! he does it!
That was such an interesting match to watch.
From tennis point of view, super-gutsy ball-striking from both players, esp Golub on his FH.
That particular play actually cost him the early break which he managed to recover when Paire failed to serve out the match at 5:4.
I had my heart in my throat watching him tighten up and double fault on the first point, then miss the next shot and go down 00:30.
Both times by about 2-3 mm.
Last time he beat a higher ranked player was in October last year.
Only 4 wins the entire 2014...
Footwork slower and caution in his FH...
You could almost feel his entire career hang on a worn piece of thread...
Then came the match point for Golub. Time must have frozen for Paire in that moment. His expressive, burning fiery eyes, extinguished by a grave shadow of dread.
I'll be honest, I can't remember even how that point went as I looked away, but Paire won it...and survived to fight for his life in the TB, failing to convert one game point in the process...
In the TB went up a mini-break straight away, but lost it.
Finally, his fears must have been numbed by the adrenaline and Paire started striking both his FH and BH with his usual conviction...and landed them...2-3 mm in...
I was fully in the match, vocal and emotional like it was a slam final...so, so happy and relieved Paire won this battle.
The beauty of small and invisible tournaments spinning out yarn away from the maddening crowd, lovely!

Interesting match between Vesely and Thiem.
Thiem's aggression giving him the slight advantage in the match-up, making Vesely hit many extra shots he shouldn't be with that serve...although the score is even.
Have to go and play myself now...no guarantee with the weather here even in the middle of summer!

Match of the day:
Dolgopolov-JJ
Also, not to be sniffed at:
Lajovic-Berlocq
Fognini-Krajinovic (was a very promising poster boy player a few years ago often practising with Federer until knee injuries ground him to a halt, would be good t see where he is at)
Verdasco-Brown

Re: ATP 500/250: Hamburg, Bogota
Wow!
Filip a set and 4:0 up, serving!!!
Fabio is combusting....just witnessed a new way to destroy a racquet....he walked to his chair for a changeover, a racquet was leaning against it, and then Fog just jumped on it sideways and broke it with a jump- kick...
However funny and entertaining it, he needs to start watching himself a bit, recently, his outbursts are beginning to show an element of rage.
And as I'm typing this, Krajinovic has just bageled him...
Filip looks very natural, a nice frame, no muscle. He's spent last two years on challengers circuits, this win will mean a lot to him.
Tennis-wise, lovely serve and quite a decent FH!

Lajovic through as well, playing Krajinovic next!
Worth mentioning, Thiem's win over Granollers yesterday, from a set down.
Shows again his nice, composed competitive temper which is a rare thing to see in such aggressive players. Promising combination!

Rosol-Robrado will be interesting. Rosol will remain an underachiever, he has the goods, has the guts, but lacks some brains.

Rosol has got calmed down on courts recently and he looks quite good currently. Their match could be really good and a winner can be whoever from them.

Re: ATP 500/250: Hamburg, Bogota
Rosol The Great will always have a special place in tennis history!
The man who blew Nadal off the court in style...and not just off Centre Court in R2, but off many other courts for 7 blissful months during which tennis managed to recover a little!
On paper, Darcis win was even more amazing: an injured, short SBH-er in straight sets!!!!! Aaaand R1!
Somehow, Rosol's win, maybe because it was the first one and so wildly unexpected (I am pretty sure none of us here knew the guy existed!) and had that earthquake effect.
That win is probably worth the rest of his career as I'm sure he'd still be lurking somewhere between 100-150 without it.
Instead, he carved himself an ATP title and a bit of money to have a comfortable life and not struggle any more.
I love how those kind of matches change careers like that.
DC win did miracle for all Serbian players.
Olympic games propelled Murray to win there and probably USO a few months later.
Lajovic would probably still be rotting and slugging in futures and challengers, had not he had his DC final appearance last year.

Re: ATP 500/250: Hamburg, Bogota
Some interesting results today:
Rosol edged Robredo in two close sets, Dolgo went down to Kamke in 3 , L. Mayer beat Thiem in two easy sets, Krajinovic retired against Lajovic, and the young Zverev seems to be mking a name for himself, by beating first Youzhny yesterday and then Giraldo today.
I saw him practise against Nole in Boodles last summer, a tall, skinny baby faced Nike protegee...looked like another boring baseline wannabe.
Then I saw a bit of him against Dr Misha yesterday, and still the same, but seems to have a decent tennis brain on him for a youngster.
Nothing else stood out much, not the best of movers or servers, not particularly aggressive either...will keep an eye on him as he's only 17.

L.Mayer-Lajovic could be good, as Mayer has quite a decent FH, but hopefully Dusan's SBH will survive it.

Tell me about it!
All the years of hard studying and working , sacrifice and self-denying, just to maintain body fed and sheltered...which is why I love tennis so much, as it makes it all bearable
Hopefully, retirement will make up for the grind.

Yes, Ivo hasn't had it easy...did you know he nearly died from some nasty meningitis virus last year (or the year before), he did well to come back and compete at the top level.
Wimbledon wouldn't give him a WC this year... terrible but not surprising after that 11 foot-faults incident against Murray in 2012 about which he dared to complain!
35 now...and probably enjoying life & tennis more than ever.
Ivo aside, the young Zverev made an impressive comeback against Kamke, just beat him after being bagelled in the first set...we know that's never going to happen to (just about to start his match) Dusan Lajovic!

Watching the match now...(someone's gotta do it ) didn't realise L. Mayer was a SBH-er, too (I can 't believe it in fact, esp after seeing him live against Dimi in Wimbledon !!!)
Nice battle going on 4:4 in the 2nd...would be super if Lajovic could take it to the 3rd and...win!!!

And 7:5 it is for Mayer...a really nice little match with some lovely ball striking, you simply can't beat the beauty and variety of a SBH...
It's good and encouraging to see it alive and competing against all odds.

Re: ATP 500/250: Hamburg, Bogota
I hope so, but he needs to start playing like a SBH-er. His game is that of a DBH-er at the moment and that's probably because it's simply not good enough.
He is the only SBH-er on tour that scrambles.
Maybe if the conditions got faster.
The player that plays very nice SBH tennis is Golubev, I wish he could afford the best coach and whatever else is needed to succeed today, lovely player!

In quickly just to say... happy we got a new teenage sensation. Don't think he can win Ferrer though, heard he seemed pretty exhausted yesterday already. Should I be home at the time, I'll watch him. But it's so sunny outside and hot and inside it's even hotter, so gotta escape til the evening! Cya.
