Very Unlucky Empty Very Unlucky

Post by Daniel Sun Jul 06, 2014 6:51 pm

Federer was very unlucky in that last set.  Djokovic was ailing and tired, and 1 dodgy service game cost him.  Djok got away with it.  Age made the biggest difference, really.  Federer not at his prime best.

1.  32 years of age (Is it really 33????)
2. Grass court more like a hard court because it was worn out
3. Luck factor in last set (although Fed was lucky it went to 5 in the first place)
4. Should not be allowed to have trainer out because of fatigue.  TOUGH LUCK.

I think Federer has only 1 year left to try and win another Slam, and the US Open may be his last chance of all.  He showed great courage and bottle to even manage to get that to 5 sets (along with a little luck).  Real shame.

It's annoying to see such variety beaten from the baseline, and Djok sliding about on it like it was clay.

Oh well.  Djokovic is at least a good sport, and a nice guy.  Unlike Nadal.  Neither of those will be reaching Slam finals at 32.  Not a prayer.

I won't take anything away from Djoko, but I agree trainers should not be allowed to massage out cramping from fatigue.  Federer or any opponent has earned that advantage by taking the other player to the limits of what their body allows..   Then right before you serve, the guys gets to call a time out to get a calf massage? nonsense.

If Fed finds the forehand which really should just be a matter of finetuning his relationship with the new racquet- I think he has the game to win a US Open and certainly Wimby--    I just don't know if physically the US Open is a tournament that he can succeed in at this point..    He'll never be as fresh going into a final as he was today and even though he was incredibly fit, his serve speed declined rapidly in the end as did his footwork.   2 weeks of 95-100 degree New York weather is going to be a tough ask.

Damn, I wanted one more Wimby for him though! IF he had pulled out the 5th set- it would have been so legendary.

We saw federer shaking his arm/wrist in the first 2 sets as he had a problem. he did not call the trainer, did he? We will never know what was wrong. It coudl explaing why his FH was spraying all over the place.

Also, people on the other forum writing off Federer as definitely never gonna make another slam final are out of their minds.  He will have opportunities again.  he may not win another Slam.  He might.  But to say he definitely won't reach another Slam final, when he has just done it, is laughable.

Djoko calls it the highest level tennis final he's ever been in.. lol at nadal.

and from Conners:

They both played their best tennis at the same time. In most finals there is a lull but I didn't think there was today - it was just such high quality.
"I hope people understand what they were seeing today. They have seen a 32-year-old absolutely unbelievable athlete go toe to toe with a man five years younger than him and you have seen Novak go out there and take the game to Roger who has won seven titles on this surface."
