What, did Nole influence umpires or lie about the call?
I didn't see the whole match, and definitely don't have selective memory as you keep implying.
Of all top players, I think Nole has had the least amount of luck.

Some very poor shot selection from Fed in that game he was broken.
Playing better now, result will come.

Fed will be gone in a hurry unless he does something. Agree with nitb here, he should try to be more aggressive. Gulbis does not look like he will implode on his own today.

3rd set to Gulbis... Playing too good. Fed is playing poor.. wrong choice of shots, and at times hurrying into shots..

But that way even Murray didn't force the umpires to call off play. It was 7-7 in the 5th, and I think rightly balanced and best time to call off play for the day. I wouldn't want to see another in-the dark finish like Wimbledon 2008 finals.

Fed is playing wit very little comfidence right now. Gulbis is outpowering him from the base-line, and Fed is neither coming nor going, which is a dangerous place to be for someone of his mindset.
It's a tough choice for him as a lot of his attacking FHs are missing.

I think Berdych is meant to look good by Isner being really tired from his set match v Simon. I'd like to see him play v a better player.
Maybe Berdych's service games were made to look good by Inser's poor returning and lack of movement. But Isner's serves are the best in the game, and Berdych handled those so well. See the numbers on Aces Isner got. And against Inser and not facing a TB set is a testimony of good return game.
But Isner was carrying some Injury too.

So Gulbis now has got the measure of Fed's rather soft balls. No different than FO 2010 v Soderling.
Fed shoudl have won that one in 4 if not 3 and that is why he is not happy.

absolutely rubbish from federer today
he was never going to win the match with his backhand alone
way too casual today..no sense of urgency
no desire to want to dominate the game with his forehand

Congrats to Gulbis. It was a deserved win.
For Roger, it means that out of the last four slams, he only reached QF once.

Fed looking much worse here than he had in the early 2014 season - from AO all the way to MC he looked pretty good. Let's see how the Wimbledon through the USO stretch works out. Hopefully better than this. And here I was, starting to hope in secret he might sneak to #1 again somehow.

Mirka's giving birth in the middle of clay season definitely messed up Fed's flow.
The tour is a fast moving train these days and if you get off even at one stop it's hard to catch it again...maybe...

Yes, that is the only time he reached QF. The other three slams he went out earlier than that. Perhaps I should have said "QF or better" to make it clear what I meant.Veejay wrote:summerblues wrote:Congrats to Gulbis. It was a deserved win.

There are 5 players left in the draw who have not yet dropped a set:
- All four players in Rafa's section (Rafa, Lajovic (!!!), Anderson and Ferrer)
- Tsonga

Re: Roland Garros 2014: MOTD Day 8 Sun 31/05/2014
I was outside, haven't seen the first set and part of the second and come back to see ... this! Had a bad feeling about this when Fed failed to serve out the second set. That FH error. Managed to take it to a fifth, but I rated his chances low from the start in a fifth set. And then - broken right at the start - ominous beginning.
I really hope, that loss is not a sign of things to come. So far this season is not much better than 2013.
Congrats to Gulbis, deserved win, he was more consistent (!), not leaking as many UF errors as Federer. Some very nice points from both, even some magic, great touch, but not enough. Gulbis very intense today.
Well, tennis could only lose today with either one of these two going out, while Nadal is still in the draw. But Fed is just that extra bit special. Love how he looks more human now than during his younger days.

Told ya..naah that's mean. Although i expected this to happen, it still hurts.
But i see the positives: Roger can extra prepare for his lost (reasonable) shot for a GS succes. And i rather see him lose to Gulbis than to Berdych.
Imo Roger played like you may expect from him (these days), but only the first two sets. In the third he got outplayed and from that point it was game over. I doubt he'll ever win a fifth set again anyway.
However, this match was not about Federer losing, but about Gulbis winning. He's in the best form of his life. I hope he can keep it up.

Well, I think you were not the only one to expect it to happen. Fed losing these days to players like Gulbis can hardly be called an upset anymore. You are right though, that it's better to lose to Gulbis than to Berdych. Gulbis will beat Berdych now hopefully.gallery play wrote:Told ya..naah that's mean. I also doubted he'd win a fifth set, was surprised he grabbed a fourth tbh. I think he might win a fifth set, but not on clay. What's wrong with him? Not keeping up with modern science? Look at Ferrer! He's 32 years too and running like a 22 year old!
Imho, it's about both - and why not? Gulbis won and Fed lost. I hope for Gulbis he makes SF now and for Fed, he doesn't continue the losing ways.

Sure but during his peak years you could talk for hours about why he lost, but that's not the case now. Apart from that second set SP's there are not many clues of how he could have won this. It simply is a fair and square win for Gulbis. And Gulbis isn't even the typical nightmare opponant for Fed, but he sure had more firepower today.Autumnleaf wrote:Well, I think you were not the only one to expect it to happen. And where Djoko looks calm, Nadal looks more in a hurry. that definitly has something to do with what Nadal expects for next sunday.summerblues wrote:I have now seen both Nadal and Nole this weekend. If Nadal still has his WTA serve then that he showed in his last two matches, it will be even easier for Djoko! Of course it's a back injury.summerblues wrote:I have now seen both Nadal and Nole this weekend. If they both play like this next Sunday, Nole will be winning I think.

GP, you say this as if there was no way that Fed could have possibly won that match. There are the SPs and he should have won one of them too. I honestly don't see anything wrong with discussing such things because imho it doesn't take away anything from the winner. He won because he played better is the same as saying he won because the other guy played worse. And if the win was so fair and square, why did Gulbis need 5 sets in the first place?gallery play wrote:Sure but during his peak years you could talk for hours about why he lost, but that's not the case now. Saying there is nothing to discuss, maybe you are of the opinion that this is the best that Fed is capable of? He did commit 59 (!) UFE, that's atrocious, really. If you think that's the best he can do, he maybe should retire asap?

Agree with GP here. Both on the specifics as well as the general sentiment. It is a shame Fed could not serve out the second set but even as he was serving for it I was thinking that a two sets to love lead at that point would be too good to be true given the flow of play until then. I think the split of the first two sets was - all-in-all - a pretty fair outcome.gallery play wrote:But Fed was lucky to win the first TB. I am hopeful Fed can turn things around still - he did look much better than this for most of 2014. After he switched to the bigger frame we all talked about how it gave him more power and how he did not look so underpowered anymore. He did look underpowered again today, but I am hopeful come Wimbledon and the hard courts, he may look again more like Fed of the early spring.
