And Gasquet Verdasco could be interesting...but the top draw certainly looks weak and boring in comparison of bottom one.
Interesting stat:
The 2009 champion in Paris now has a 61-14 record at Roland Garros; 73-11 at Australian Open; 67-8 at Wimbledon and 67-9 at the US Open.
So Fed is the only player in the history of tennis to have won 60 or more matches in all 4 GS.
Not the kind of impressive quality figures but thinking about it it is the equivalent (60) of reaching the slam final of a particular slam for 10 years....or semi for 12 years...not something many have done! in one slam....let alone in 4!
I however think this is Federer's last year....if not, next year will be last. I can't see him struggling for more.....maybe he'll play only Wimby or something.

Haha, yeah not many left. Going for some risky choices.
1. Nadal - Mayer to win 6 games or less
2. Verdasco
3. Kohlschreiber
4. Ferrer
5. Garcia-Lopez
6. Karlovic to be the second big server to reach 4r
7. Lajovic to become the Nadal victim in 4r
8. Monfils

From tomorrow onwards, I will introduce a "joker". You can use it one match per day to double your points.
So in the round 8th for instance, you can pick one match where you are confident of the result. You put your jocker on this one and it doubles your points.

I suggest do it not before QF, preferably semis. You see, it will make points calculation quite some task.

I don't see why it would be some task, all I need to do is multiply jokers picks by two.

What makes you say that?
I think he is loving his life on tour.
Obviously not the physical gruel and huge traveling logistics for his family...but they all seem not to mind. It must be like an eternal holiday for them minus having to worry about every penny like the rest of us.
I think if he wins Wimbledon or does well this season, he'll keep going.
I noticed he is still a bit unsure of himself and lacking the winning confidence, so that's the only tricky piece of the puzzle I see.
He's got a very kind draw in Paris, and must be excited by his chances.

I also do not expect it to be his last year. I think he really means it when he says he wants to play in Rio.

Ferrer through is straights, too. He's been plodding quietly and steadily through his quarter...
He could really squeeze Nadal out of some juice in the QF, that would be Nadal's first seeded player!!!!!

And Karlovic out - retired with back injury apparently after losing the first set. I thought with the form he was in here, he could well become very dangerous in Wimbledon.
Get well soon, good showing from him in RG!

Haha, not compared to Nadal, our mighty clay warrior, who will meet the first seeded player in QF. Fed had the first seed in 3rd round and Tursunov hang in tough.noleisthebest wrote:(...)Tenez wrote:

Gulbis is not a cakewalk either, has been in good form in Nice and so far in RG. And Berdych? Could it have been any worse for a QF-opponent?
I'm afraid, Tenez might be right - He'll go on as long as he feels he can give himself a chance to win. As soon as that feeling is gone - it's curfews. Don't really believe in the talk of playing just for the sake of it. After having won so much, it must be frustrating to not be able to compete for the title. And the disappointment after every loss, it just must wear him down when there are no positive feelings to counter. Can't imagine, he enjoyed last year much, just went through the motions.

The only chance Mayer has is a messed up blood bag or something like that, sadly. I'll cheer every game he wins, go for it, Leo!

I love both players, great talents and entertainers, showing there is more to life than being a winning machine!
btw, how dared Ivo retire and ruin my picks...I had high hopes for him this RG

Re: Roland Garros 2014: MOTD Day 7 Sat 30/05/2014
I don't think the losing will put him off. More the fact that he likes to be close to his family and they won't be able to travel a lot more with him. But more so the physicality of the game. he might not want to force his body too much. This guy is about balance. He does everything in a balanced way. The way he has to push it a bit too hard he will stop. And that might be soon.Autumnleaf wrote:Haha, not compared to Nadal, our mighty clay warrior, who will meet the first seeded player in QF. I just saw the last 3 points of the Nadal-Mayer 2nd set.
Mayer's got the power and the shots, but not the footwork.
On Langlen, Fognini is trying to grind and blunt Monf.
He is such a crafty player, his game is made for clay!

Looks like Rafa will win comfortably enough but his game is not too convincing today. If he plays Nole in the final and plays like this, Nole will take him apart.

Watching Nadal retrieve powerful shots over and over again until he draws an error is so draining.
Playing him, must be sould-destroying!
You've got nerves of steel.

Monf has fallen into Fog's trap and nearly clowned the set away. Fog has hypnotised him with slow play and now tightening the noose around his neck by speeding the game up little by little.

Headcase is a bit harsh...
I'm sure they are both doing the best they can the way they are: passionate, capricious and uncompromising.
You've got to draw the line somewhere.
Talented people are very rarely those who are willing to grind and sacrifice. They love life more than that.
It's not all about winning, especially in this grotesque physical era.
I think they have both struck the right balance of having secured financial status and truly enjoy playing the game.
They are having fun, not suffering like Nadal.

Sometimes I wonder why you complain so much about today's society. The use of the word "uncompromising" in this context is so super modern.noleisthebest wrote:

I do not like erratic players though, even if they produce good shots here and there. There are a lot of players that can hit great looking shots with no consistency; the trick is to do it consistently. I would much rather watch a consistent grinder than an inconsistent shot maker. Of course, a consistent shot maker is bestTenez wrote:I am actually watching him. I like his game. Too erratic but he produces some great shots!
