Rotla, when will you be posting day 3 picks? Hopefully before around midnight EST (which is American East Coast's time). If you do not post it by then, I might only see it tomorrow when I wake up, but by then Day 3 will be under way.

Rotla is probably fast asleep right now...so just add your predictions as soon as you can, I suppose, without peeking at the scores!

Must have an excuse, surely! ....though he has always been very nervous at times!..and yes expectations must have played a big role.

No, he actually said there was no excuse, he tried to play his game but it didn't work.
He also said he doesn't have "all the pieces of a puzzle" how to play now that he is a slam winner, or stg to that effect...
I don't think he was injured, although he appeared heavy legged and almost frozen in he last few games, terrible shot selection to, no confidence.
He just wanted the ground to open, that's how obvious it looked.

It will be down to how he gets used to Nadal's spin. he may find it rather easy and realise that Nadal is not that tough if played with cool, or on the other hand just feel the urge to pull winners too early. I do believe that a few find it easy to play Nadal... not that different from that time when young Djoko said it was easy to beat Nadal....despite losing to him.

I think it will also be down to how nervous Nadal will get to see easy winners get past him.

Well besides Nadal losing in the first round at WImby the other slam champion I can think of who had a similar experience was Pete when he came back to defend his first USO. He was very nervous and even said he was happy he lost (in the first few rounds) as the pressure was too big. Connors was gutted by Pete's words and said....guess what...he was a chicken who should be ashamed of himself. It did not prevent Pete to bounce back and win 13 other slams......though I doubt we can expect that from Stan!

Interesting comment. After seeing Thiem today, how well/quickly do you think he'll get used to Nadal's spin?

I think Nadal is already nervous about playing Thiem, as he said in the press conference today he hasn't seen him play yet. I find that hard to believe.

I would have been more confident had Dom been a couple of inches taller. However I think he can hurt Nadal cause he may find it easy to hit those short balls. It's a thin line when playing Nadal. You may have that little extra pace which can make a huge difference, as then the ball will come back shorter making things even easier....or on the other hand, if you cannot hit those spinny shots with ease, the battle becomes really tough with always one winner at the end.

It will definitely be an interesting match.
The good thing is, from memory, Thiem is a steady, good competitor, so that will be very important for him esp as they'll probably play on Chatrier.
Despite the bulky build, Thiem moves better than Stan, at least inside the court.
I only saw one of his matches, and can't remember even that one well, but I think he's got a chance if he starts well.
The crowd will surely be behind him.

Why would you think so? Grass is his worst surface and clay his best. I am still shocked that he went out in R128, his worst result since 2006! Okay, he got a tricky opponent, but still... what's wrong with him? Of course he could have a sudden career turn around in grass tournaments now; you never know with Stan, he is incredibly hard to predict.

So far he didn't have any success on grass though. Last year he went out in straights to Lleyton Hewitt in R128, in 2012 he lost in R128 to Melzer in five. His best Wimbledon results were R16 in 2008 (lost to Safin in four) and 2009 (lost to Murray in five).

He made the 2013 final in the Netherlands grass warm up event (beat Darcis  Rose on the way  Laugh ) and lost in straights to Mahut there.

Clay certainly isn't his best....  His one and only Slam is on hard court, and he has done next to nothing on clay.  In the faster conditions that favour his attacking game, he excels.

I think people here underestimate GG Lopez.
He is a quality player, not far behind Stan, in fact. He does not have any particular weapons that standout, but is a solid as it gets from the baseline, and quite a smart clay-court player.
He will have been tough for anybody yesterday.
I'm pretty sure he beat Nadal a few years ago during the indoor Asian swing.

But as I said Stan has not particularly quick hands which are much needed in grass, at least the first week. He has a poor record at SW19...from top of my head. I watched him train there live v Norman from very close range and he looked good....just to lose in the first round.....or maybe second.

I only remember one match from .stan on grass and that was the 5 setter against Murray on CC, when the roof was closed for the very first time.
Stan lost, but was better than Murray in that match.
I also think, just like Nole, his hame is better suited for slower surfaces,  for different reasons, of course.

Yes, it's true that his only Slam is on (slow) hard court, but his career winning percentage is best on clay. He won junior French Open. He won Monte Carlo this year and reached 2 other clay court masters Finals (Madrid 2012, Rome 2008).

He has never reached any hard court masters final besides the AO 2014, though hc is unquestionable his second best surface, not far behind clay in fact. Grass is a very distant third. I have not seen him play on grass, but I suspect his movement may be a problem there.

The faster conditions on grass also take time away from him to set up his big shots. That's why he lost to Mahut and Hewitt last year and I really don't think he'd lose to them on clay. Stan is able to generate so much power on slower surfaces where he can prepare his shots though, that he can hit through most opponents there.
