Miami Thread Empty Miami Thread

Post by Polly 81 on Fri Mar 21, 2014 7:23 pm

Thought I'd start a new thread to cover the tournament. Can Djokovic do the double?

The first day of second round, with a lot of the big guys playing including defending champ, Andy Murray.

Federer currently playing an entertaining match against Dr Ivo. Can he secure the No. 4 spot this week?

So Fed wraps it up in 1h14, only losing 3 points on serve.

Next up: Djokovic vs Chardy

Glad you saw Fed's match as entertaing, I found it quite boring in fact, so watched Thiem Roberdo instead, and then switched back to the end of Fed Ivo.
Fed looked  really happy with the win.

Yeah, I enjoyed it. There were some good creative shots at times, and it was good to see a confident (sometimes nonchalant) Federer.

Yes, there were a few beaufitul BHs.
Ivo looked like the thing of the past though...there was no tension in the match at all.
Isner is the New Age Ivo.

Nole looking refreshingly aggressive!
He did say it's very humid in Miami, so probably doesn't want to spend too much time on the court, as it seems to be quite warm as well.

Nole Chardy has turned into a borefest, too.
Switching to Dimi Montanes, looking interesting...Montanes wearing a really nice outfit from from S. Tacchini.

Even Sainsbury's orange uniform looks better than Nole's latest UPS delivery man look.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to create a Fed central thread here, but I've just worked out a little edit to the original post above: Federer could become No. 3 if he wins, and Stan doesn't get past SF. Interesting times.

Other interesting ranking info: Berdych could jump from 6 to 4 if he wins, Murray can jump from 8 to 5 if he retains his title (both depending on other players' performances of course).

I also got that impression from a comment of his during one of his pressers last week.  Would be very impressive.  I think if either Nole or Rafa keep high level of consistency, then Fed will not do it.  If they both slip more frequently than usual, he might have a chance.

This match is about whoever plays a bit less bad of the 2, will win.

Pathetic tennis.

I saw only the first set and Ebden played well, Murray tried everything, played "aggressive", even 32 shot long rallies, but nothing worked.
I thought Ebden was going to win the match , so surprised to see the score this morning.

After serving and holding for the 1st set, Ebden got broken every single time he took to serving.

I only saw the last couple of games and by then Andy had clear upper hand - he was playing quite well while Ebden was all over the place.

The first set must have seen them both play very different.

This is the problem though, isn't it? The consistency is shot. He doesn't keep the same level like he did in his prime. So another match, he will have bad service and lose.

Serve was good, but we need to remember it was against Karlovic, who is known for his serving more than returning.

Fed served good definitely, but this match can't be taken too much for it.

Yet again in his prime Karlo broke him! and I am not even mentioning the 2008 match Fed lost cause then I believe Fed was not 100% either.

I don't know- I see it both ways..  Past 7 tournaments- he's made semifinals or better..  Compare him to the other top guys who all have off days here and there-  Fed's consistent with his level.  Sure, he's not dominating week in and week out like before- but who could at this point in a carreer in the modern game.   He has tremendous miles on the legs, doped competitors who have been training and striving for the bar he set,  family obligations, mental fatitgue or burnout from all the years of being hunted........       take the back issue out of the equation and he is incredibly consistent.

As other said- against IVO- he literly has no pressure on serve so he could basically do what he wanted and nearly had a perfect service point match.

I think Fed is mentally invigorated right now.  I talked about it a little last year as it was happening early in the year, then the back issue kind of trumped everything- but I really think we saw Federe- perhaps for the 1st time- mentally burned out from Tennis at the beginning of last year.. That run for #1 again was amazing but must have been pressure packed.. He almost immediately put the foot on the brakes-- started talking about 2013 was going to be a "transition year" where he played less but practiced more..  Then he went on his exhibition tour at the end of 2012 and broke up one of his main training blocks..  After the AO- he went on several charity trips before Rotterdam and Dubai and basically showed up at each tournament without having practiced at all..  and he wasn't the same..   maybe this led to the back problems.    I remember during his South African charity visit I mentioned to Tenez that the way Fed was moving and squatting on his knees while hanging out with the kids was exactly what I do when my back is acting up...  This was before he really turned up gimpy at IW..     I think his back was acting up and he was burned out, wasn't motivated like usual and that began the downward spiral which - gasp- left him as ONLY #6 in the world.

The back got better and I think his motivation to prove them wrong one last time kicked in- and we are seeing Fed near the top of whatever level he is capable of at this point and with certainly restricted flexibility and movement due to the years of back issue.

Delpo out for the rest of the season with the wrist surgery on Monday.

http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2014/03/reports-del-potro-opts-wrist-surgery-could-be-out-season/50968/

Such a shame...I hope he comes back quicker this time as it's the left wrist, so he can still keep on hammering those FHsDTL during practice....as well as work on his serve...
I reckon he could be even back for USO.

That's sad Sad

Anyone know how this happens, scientifically speaking? I mean, I assume it's because of pressure from the double hander. It's good that were not seeing more of this with right wrists seeing that they take more impact.

He obviously has weak wrists...plus he bashes the ball very hard.

Luckiest AO14 Loser S. Robert seems to have nearly taken the first set against Berdych.
Vasselin beat Cilic, Stan toughed it out against Taver.

I wonder how gritty Hewitt will fare against Nadal later.

Hewitt had not a chance against Nadal, especially the current Hewitt. Thats just what happened. All long ralliees with hewitt making an error or Nadal hitting a winner. Hewitt doesn't have the shots or the serve to beat Nadal, and in speed and agility Nadal is miles ahead.

His Physical counter punching and long exhausting rallies were once his biggest weapons and perhaps those won him 2 slams. That bar has been raised too high now. He was never a great shot maker or server or anything much more than a physical counter puncher. In this age his opponent has to play bad in order for him to win, like the Brisbane 2014 Final.

I can't remember court playing so slow like this year's Miami.
Tennis looks terrible on it.
Only players who take the ball early are watchable.

Saw a few games of Murray Lopez...Lendl in the box, Lopez injured, temperatures very hot....it was an agony for everyone involved.

Federer was timing the ball beautifully.
His ball-striking is still head and shoulders above everyone else, amazing what he can create with the ball even in these miserable conditions.

Nishi hammering Dimi's Bh while the Bulgarian was serving to stay in the match produce 4 BH UEs.

This end of set hilighted so much the problem those SHBHers face nowadays.

Nishi and Dimi were two players who almost beat Nadal in AO, so I was very curious to see how they would square off.
For me, it was going to be Nishi's speed vs Dimi's length/pace.
I was tired from the previous night (seems not only veteran players, but us fans can't string two days in a row Winking) and unfortunately dropped off a few times during the match even when Dimi was 40:15  serving  to stay in the match...I thought we were going to have the third set.
But, as it turned out, he lost and in a way I am not surprised, as Nishi takes the ball early so in these slow conditions I was expecting him to got for his shots a lot, my thought before this match was that the more aggressive player would win.
I was impressed with what Nishi managed to get out of his 1st serve considering his height, plus he is a great competitor.
Dimi  must have thought he had his match in the bag before it started because he did not keep a cool head in longer  rallies (not the very long, just the 5+ shots each ones), he  tried to pull out winners  down the line out of defensive positions, and failed every time...
When I saw him live against Nole  from super close up last summer, what struck me was how similar his game was to Nole's.
It relies on pacy long ground strokes and defense, except that unlike Nole, Dimi often gets pushed farther than he should be behind the baseline.
He can't seem to be able to make his mind up whether he wants to attack or defend...so as a result, quite a messy game.
His FH is a very nice and pacy shot and his serve is pretty good as well, but for some reason he  can't stream those strengths of his into an attacking, energy conserving game.
I partly blame Rasheed for it, who seems to have ruined Tsonga as well.
Next match Ferrer-Nishi will be so interesting, I would love Nishi to overcome the ultimate grinder. It will be kind of two lightweights with different yet similar presence on court.

You seem to have changed your mind about Nishi.

To me there is 2 reasons why dimi lost. First the fact he has not got quick enough hands and Nishi taking the ball quite early exposed that....and secondly of course the SHBH which becomes fragile in tense situations, again well exploited by Nishi.

Dimi should keep improving at a faster rate and should probably beat Nishi next time they play...either on clay or on faster courts.

I think Dimi needs to work on his FH and start taking it earlier if he can, otherwise....his game/progress will stagnate.
He is basically weaponless, so of course can't play a proper attacking game.
He's got to create a weapon asap.

Otherwise, he won't be beating Nishi.

So his problems are in his head and hands, and he's a tennis player, phew thank goodness he should be ok then.
