Post by Tenez Wed Mar 05, 2014 5:10 pm

Yes good one. So Delpo is probably going to retire before it starts, which means Djoko has Tsonga, Berdych while Nadal has everybody else.

Interesting. Federer's draw is not that tough actually. Stan in 1/4F is certainly doable. Nadal will have Murray. Hope Murray can deliver though I doubt he will get through to the 1/4F.

Djoko has a cake draw...but he needs one so that's good.

I'd say having Stan in the QF is probably among the hardest he could have. The top half of the draw is loaded.

Who will beat nadal? Murray is not 100% and fed won't- who is the "impossible to beat" opponent he will face?

Fed has a good quarter. Seems like the random draws always figure out how to set up a fedal matchup though.

Nadal's path:

Stepanek- in great form from last week
Dolgopolov- also in great form reached Rio final
Monfils- one of the standout players of the year so far, has won many tournaments
Murray- Grand Slam Champion on his favourite surface of hard courts
Federer/Wawrinka- both have had superb starts to the year
Djokovic- well, he's Djokovic

I still believe Federer can beat him, especially over 2 sets. I think he played particularly poorly in the AO as he probably did not recover in time after his murray match. If he has an easier draw in IW...why not. It was pretty close at Cincy with his small racquet...maybe he can do it here in IW.

I cannot see Stan beating the Fed of Dubai.

Fed's game is much more complete. Fed is troubled by Nadal's zippy shots....not so much by Stan's shots.

Amri- you bleat on about nadal having to best win/loss ever, but you think guys like Monfils, stepanik are impossible for him to beat- on a court that was literly custom made to enhance nadals game. Give it up.

He very well May defeated. After all he's never once defended a non clay title in his career, but this jinxing thing you have going on is comical to read.

Yes, he must have been very tired after his marathon match against Murray...

Why did Fed lose to Nadal in 3 sets, and yet Stan beat him in 4 sets then?

4 sets v Murray on a slow court is no gimmee. One set with Stan was enough to destroy your man!

I thought you didn't believe in it?

I mean I know why Nadal beat Fed in 3, but lost to Stan; despite not a huge difference if any between Fed and Stan (I mean if not anything as you said Fed is more complete).

Federer to play doubles with Stan!! Practice for DC?  Also an indicator, Fed feeling physically well.

On another note- Fed fans at the tourney reporting Fed debuted new back exercises before and after practice.. no one has ever seen that routine in public before..  perhaps a new regimen to keep the problem at a minimum or an indication of the issue lingering- but the doubles news seems to contradict that.

I don't see the contradiction personally. Back issues are a very complex problem. Playing through it can be as good or as back as resting unfortunately.

We have seen for instance in Dubai, Federer starting ok v Stepanek and then get a bad patch in the middle set which improved a bit just in time in the 3rd. Whereas v Djoko and Berdych his back improved as the match went on, very similar to his 2012 FO and Wimby campaign.

I also think he is playing double to improve his net skills. it's amazing how quickly one can improve at the net if constantly exposed. Conquering the net is about automatism, constant approach and well set routines and reflexes knowing what and when and where to volley. This is something I rediscovered recently and believe it or not at nearly 50 I have rediscovered what volleying is about.

This happened to me after being beaten in a double by 2 55+ yo who volleyed everything and the worse thing is that they never looked rushed, as if they had 20yo reflexes (in fact better than most in our club), only because that was the tennis they played all their lives.

I used to think volleying is essentially a eye/hand coordination skill and though it is, practice is the much bigger part of it.

Federer always had the base but we saw in Dubai he started to rush his opoponents like they were not used to it. If he keeps going in that direction, he will get many easy points and save his body....plus it will break the rhythm of his opponents.

Stepanek has shown the way for years but unfortunately he did not have a good enough serve, plus his ground shots are not good enough to come to the net in a constant and decent position.

Federer I am sure learnt a lot from his Wimby defeat v Stakovski...this year should be interesting.

I think Stan has every chance of beating current Federer. The match up means I'd put Federer at greater odds of doing it than Nadal (based on current forms), but I would put Stan favourite.

Does not bode well for Stan especially considering that Federer most likely gave to Stan his only loss on clay as Fed has first said he would not play MC.

Secondly last year at IW Fed was badly suffering from his back, yet he did not manage to beat him. Stan has improved certainly but if fit I cannot se Federer lose that one. Stan is too much of a hit and miss. Federer almost always manages to bring the ball back.

All so true.. funny you mentioned the Stakovski match- I was just thinking last night what a fantastic move that would be for Fed to come out and do that to one of the top guys..

Video of Fed doing his back exercises before practice with Edberg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNcPbAHkcDM

All classic lower back/ sciatic problem exercise. I do many of them myself every night.   Seeing what he was doing- these are common and I am sure is his every day routine- I guess he just decided to do it in front of people this time..    it looks to me that he is working at keeping the muscles loose over the sciatic nerve and "flossing the sciatic"--    which sciatica is a hell of a pain in the ass/leg- literly.

Saw a bit of the double today.....mixture of crazy reflexes and many UEs.

As mentioned Federer looked like he was saving his back by serving 2nd after Stan on each set. They won the first set convincingly and then I had the feeling they wanted to lose as neither seemed keen to play double next week. But I was wrong as they pulled through at the end.

I have always been convinced that the most talented players at singles would also be the best at tennis.....unless of course you have extremely talented players at double who do not wish to become physical beasts required to performed on the singles tour.

Doubles is almost better to watch than single.....the problem is it's hard to identify to a team which is not your nationality, which can be of 2 nationalities, and above all who are not that famous anymore.

Still I made the effort to watch that one because of Fed/Stan and It was quite good to watch...little drama though.

I rarely watch doubles.
The only ones I enjoy are Davis Cup matches, as they are generally full of atmosphere and drama.
Other than that, I agree with McEnroe that doubles are not good these days, mainly due to quality of players.
The most obvious to me when I last watched a doubles match (GB vs USA in DC the other week) was what poor groundstrokes they all had, also from my own small experience, in order to enjoy doubles and play well as a team you really need to know the partner well and click with them on the court.
One team that played well was Marc Lopez/Granollers in O2 2 years ago.
I had to kill time between the afternoon and evening session one day and ended up watching them beat the Brians. Lopez was really good.

I would like to see more singles players play doubles, but the schedule is too tough for that.

I think double is great to watch live, in particular at Wimby from close. then it's really impressive.

But otherwise not a fan....much better to play it than to watch.

The more interesting half of the draw all playing today.
I am curious to see how Stan handles AO champion pressure, after a fairly long break.
I would not be surprised if Ivo takes him out today.

I hope for a Nole- Fed final.

FK, Stan is playing after a prolonged break. He himself admitted to skip some practice days and at Pro level this can make a difference. Ivo is not playing bad either.
