Andy Murray's New Coach Empty Andy Murray's New Coach

Post by noleisthebest Wed Apr 09, 2014 9:48 pm

Thanks to the new celebrity coach trend started by Andy Murray, they have now become almost as interesting to talk about as the players.

I tought Lendl did an excellent job: Olympic gold, US Open, Wimbledon...at one stage there was even talk of Murray being Number One!
https://ourtennisforum.forumotion.co.uk/t387-lendl-murray-is-the-real-number-one?

It can't have been easy to work with Murray, though...

That successful relationship is now finished and Murray is looking for a new coach. He says he wants to find somebody by French Open:

"I don't plan on playing much tennis for the next week because I haven't had much time off this year. I don't know exactly how long I will take off but I need to let my body recover.
I'm sitting down with all the guys I work with tomorrow just to chat about things. I haven't wanted to talk about it or discuss it yet because it can be distracting.
'There's a lot of factors you need to look at and I would hope I would have someone in place by the French Open, but I don't want to rush it, make a mistake'. Imdon't want to get someone just because they've won a lot of tournaments or were great players."

Who do you think should be Murray's next coach, another celebrity?

Well Jeremy Bates it will be then!

I don't remember him, but the name sounds familiar.

I think he'll struggle to find anyone to replace Lendl.
To have any success, it will have to be a celebrity coach, because Murray is the kind who will only take seriously and not be foulmouthed towards someone who had achieved more than him.
Plus, that person will have to be very patient, wise and perceptive and WANT to work with Murray, esp post back surgery and Lendl's legacy.

Murray's mindset is so ingrained in negativity and passiveness, it would take huge effort to shift him into any kind of aggressive mode..and even that is a big question mark...so maybe he is best off with Jeremy Bates after all!

Well I think he does not need much of a coach. It's so physical that the game in itself is pretty simple.....it's about lasting longer than the other.

Yes, but look where has his fitness tennis has got him to: a back surgery at 26...
Sure, he can continue that route, as it's probably his only option since he is basically weaponless.

Maybe I was being too optimistic thinking all that great anticipation and reading of the game can be put into proper use Winking

It's going to be very interesting to see how he goes in the next few years, definitely the most vulnerable of all "big four".
I still don't know how he managed to win USO, let alone Wimbledon...

While I think current players peak is between 28-32, I very much doubt the 3 "physical players" will plateau that long! I have been predicting Nadal's decline for a long time but was mostly wrong bar the fact he indeed had to retire for months (whatever the reasons behind).

With today's technology we never know and they may extend their time but whatever happens I am pretty sure, they will not be top 3 at 30! That's a prediction I'll add in my thread! In fact I can even say 29!

You have been pretty spot on with a lot of your long-term predictions.

Nadal has had his rests, Murray seems to be needing rest after a few months this year already (without even going deep into any tournaments  he entered) Nole is exhausted according to Becker, as well.
Other players just seem to be getting injured too easily, all signs of pushing their bodies beyond their limits. Not good at all, but that's the price of success in this era sadly...

However!

Look at Ferrer...32 and still covering miles and miles every match.
At least Nole doesn't spend too much time on court against most players.
Though, even Ferrer has recently admitted his motor is finally starting to show signs of all that mileage:

"I've noted a small physical slip, especially this year. It's costing me more to play my best tennis. It seems that it's costing me more to react, or recover. I play a good match and the next day I find it harder to react."

Yes he is correct. That's perfectly normal. In fact Federer has felt that way (recovering time) since he was 27 or 28 actually. he mentioned it then.

But the reason I think those guys won't last as long as Ferrer for instance is that the new generation will push them out and they will find harder to keep up with more powerful players cause they simply have not got the shots to save them the running.

Ferrer was lucky that the conds slowed at the right time for him....like Nadal and the others. But the new generation is starting to get better at hitting through those guys. No different than when the Courrier, Agassi, Medv, Korda etc...learnt how to hit through the clay specialists (Bruguera, Wilander, etc...).

Federer did not have the luck to train v moonballers young. whereas Dimi and co were exposed to them early on....and that will make the diference soon.

That's a very good point about the younger generation exposed earlier to spin and Ferrer benefitting from late slowing down. Will be very interesting to follow what happens in the next two years.

Nole is quite tall despite not looking as so on TV.
Strangely, Murray is probably the worst opponent for him right now as when he is pumped he can blast his CC FH and send Nole running.

Even in their last match in Miami when Novak  looked physically weak and low on confidence, Murray had the upper hand and I could see Nole worried. Just that Murray often can't keep his unnatural attacking mode for too long.

The other hard hitters are not as fit and as fast.
Only Delpo came close in Wimbledon.

I think this clay season is going to be very interesting if the first quarter if 2014 is anything to go by.
I too want the roadrunning era to end.

Yes...though it seems Federer is still the one causing Djoko most trouble.

He always has, esp on faster surfaces.
Can't wait to see draw in Monte Carlo (Saturday).
Can you see Fed beating Nadal there?

I can't put my finger on it but Nadal looks a bit different this year, just edgy for some reason.
I think he didn't take that AO loss very well and when his confidence is shaken, he folds meekly. Remember 2011 and those 7 consecutive losses in finals to Novak?
I think he almost didn't  want to play that USO one.

Although with Nadal, I'll believe it when I see it only. His RG reign has to end some day!

No idea. I always thought that Fed at his best is better than Nadal....even on clay....so for me he will always has a chance....even if that chance is 1/10.
