ATP 500/250 Dubai/Acapulco/Sao Paolo
While watching Tsonga - Vasselin match the other day and enjoying Vasselin's bash-free tennis, I realised that I probably would not have seen it if he was playing, say...Mahut.
It only then sadly dawned on me how important charisma is on a tennis court...and why people pay "big bucks" (I have even missed the charismatic voice of Robbie Koening in the last few weeks) to see those players.
So... at last, after that memorable AO Stan-Nadal final which we went over with a fine comb until the last few hairs from the top of Nadal's Oscar performance fell off, charisma is now back with a vengeance!!!!!
HOURRAAAAAH!!!!!!!!
They are all back....ALL OF THEM!!! (minus Stan, the man of 2014 so far, but let's not split hairs again) !!!
ATP 500 Dubai, Outdoor Hard
Since its inaugural tournament in 1993, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships has consistently showcased the world's best players in competition and also in spectacular locations around Dubai. In 2005, two ATP World Tour Champions - Andre Agassi and Roger Federer - scaled the Burj Al Arab for a friendly practice session atop the helipad at the iconic hotel. The tournament has won the ATP World Tour 500 award nine times in 10 years (2003-06, 2008-12). Nole going for his 5th title here, trying to equal Federer's record.

The event, held at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess, is a favourite destination amongst players - particularly clay court specialists. In 2007, Acapulco won the ATP World Tour award for best tournament of the year in its category. In 2014 the tournament switches to hard court.

The tweener from fed again....so good. Doing it on a fast surface instead of clay where the ball sits up is much harder.

Yes, and the nonchalant ease with which he did it....
This was just what he needed for a first match after a month's break, almost like a practice session.
David Mercer was in his Fed trance at times

Re: ATP 500/250 Dubai/Acapulco/Sao Paolo
Looks like Fed has fixed his back, well...at least enough to think/feel he has! Asked whether Nadal can break his slam record:
"Yeah, absolutely. But the good thing is I am still playing and my goal is to add more titles to my count—and not just Grand Slam titles. I love any tennis tournament I play in and Dubai is an important tournament for me.
"I am playing top tennis. For me it’s just a matter of staying healthy, staying consistent and getting to semis and finals. I feel as if I’m in as good a shape as I have been for a year, so that’s very encouraging. I feel my best tennis is around the corner. I know I’ve said that a few times, but this time I really feel it’s the case. I have zero pain and spent a very encouraging month in Dubai training in December. I am confident for the year ahead."

I listened to it in Italian..."suprima classa, il Maestro, Ultimo talent..." were the words I could pick up.
Though Becker was average and so was Federer by his standard.

Haven't we heard that before and then in his semi v nadal at that last AO he was the shadow of himself.
But good to see that he believes his best tennis is around the corner.

That was a strange one against Nadal...
Still, I am convinced his best tennis is around the corner. But he really needs matches to get it going and rolling.
His draw here isn't that bad until the SF.

In a strange way, Becker was just too slow for him today, apart from a few serves, there was zero challenge.
A win against Tsonga/Delpo/Berd type of players would get him closer.
He needs a match against a quality counter-puncher like Simon, but they all seem to be in Acapulco this week.
It feels like the real season has just begun.

well looking at the OP, it's got to be between Djoko, Fed and Delpo. I think Fed could do it actually.

No Dubai was always this time of year as far as I can remember.
Firstly claiming that Nadal can beat his GS record, which is as realistic as saying people can fly to the moon simply because they have swine flu.
Then the stuff about 'best tennis around the corner' he said earlier in the year... that's simply not the case. He's declining now, his best tennis is not around the corner.
However he is still playing 'top' tennis, ie his tennis is in the top 4 or so at his best.
Dear me, Federer talking nonsense on both counts.noleisthebest wrote:Looks like Fed has fixed his back, well...at least enough to think/feel he has! Asked whether Nadal can break his slam record:

I think his best tennis is still the best out there....simply cause it is still in his racquet. He has the best shots and it's simply a question of form. However I agree that in terms of producing his best consitently, top 4 is probably right.....though I'd say top 3 to be more precise.

Did anyone see the Tweener point!?

If you take what Fed said about best tennis around the corner in context with other comments he has made about understanding he is out of prime now-- pretty sure he means his best tennis that he is currently capable of at this age and point in his career is around the corner- not so much we are going to see Federer at the best level he's ever played ever again.

It's just that NITB indicated, and I remember some headlines on espn, saying Federer's claim was 'his best tennis was around the corner' but I guess we have to apply some context.

It wouldn't matter if Nadal did beat 17 GS, the reason is this:
Federer would still hold 7 at the greatest Slam, and would have more titles at US and Australian Open. Therefore Federer will always have more Slams at 3 of them, and on two surfaces, vs Nadal.. with just one Slam dominated, and one surface.

I actually really think his best tennis is round the corner, not just best "for his age".
His game has become so rich and abundant over the years, add his talent and creativity to it which only compounds and enhances it and you have one very fine and complex game that needs a bit of time to get it all going. But once it gets going...there will be no stopping.
He has not enjoyed a continuity in full health for a long time last year, but looks like he is back on track in that area.
And if he is healthy and stays that way, I really see him playing his best ever tennis around Wimbledon.
He will need a few things to go his way, maybe gentler draws to get him to SFs and Fs before RG in order to build and consolidate his confidence, as that's probably the most fragile element still.
I don't know how that is supposed to happen, my guess is just playing lots and letting the game shape itself out. Maybe a few good matches against quality counter-punchers could hone the game...followed by an inspirational match, like that 2011 RG SF, I don't know...it's almost an uncharted territory, really. We have never had a player like him who has had to play in this kind of conditions.
My only question mark was the new racquet, but he seems to have benefitted from it, although at times it feels like some sharpness is missing.
So, I hope things go well for him and he gets that game rolling soon.
And when that happens, it will be tennis we have not yet seen from him. I just know. He has so much to offer.
He knows it, too.

At 32 you are still very close to your best physically (unless injured/back/etc...) though technically and timing wise you still improve so I think he means what he means....especially with this bigger racquet.truffin1 wrote:Did anyone see the Tweener point!?

well certainly a pretender for the undisputed "BEST" which in a way can be a pretender for GAOT.Julia Santamaria wrote:And someone who's best at a particular point in time is undisputed GOAT?Tenez wrote:Julia Santamaria wrote:Or he can go for the Simon Reed combo:

I can agree to that. The one who won the last slam is the one who beat the best players and is therefore the best.

Well he sees Djoko as the favourite.....And I agree. So Federer is no Mac yet...thanks for that!noleisthebest wrote:Tenez wrote:Really? may God help Federer not turn into a McEnroe kind commentator!noleisthebest wrote:

You really are desperate for Nadal to be GOAT, aren't you?
The guy who stood 10m behind the baseline to receive a serve from Dolgopolov?
No chance...

Just did and am glad I still haven't completely lost it!
When I posted these two links the other day, the audio cut right after Federer mentioned Berdych, and then restarted automatically and I never heard the rest of the interview then, but they must've fixed it since.
Same with Nole's.

Nope nothing to do with dadaism.
Let me try again.
You're really desperate for David Cameron to get re-elected aren't you?
Oh wow, I just urinated on my toilet water which had blue detergent, and now it's turned green!

Let me help you out once again "Julia"
Federer: Leads Wimbledon Titles
Leads Australian Open Titles
Leads US Open Titles
That's two of the three surfaces, and three of the four Slams. And Nadal will never ever match it. So give in. Your hero has lost.
