Just saw this, what a surprise, almost a shock, really did not see it coming....don't know even what to think about it.
I knew Nole got on well with Becker as  Becker is Slobodan Zivojinovic's best men, so always had strong ties with Serbian tennis, but this!!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/25429597

Well, well, well....2014 can't start quick enough!!!!

With Fed working with Edberg, Murray with Lendl and now this, I am getting very excited  diva

I am not surprised at all. Good choice, Becker is  strong character and he is exactly what Nole's team needs. I felt long time  that Marian is a great coach and person, but somebody with high tennis profile  is really needed in his team.
I look forward to watching a  final between Nole and Murray, and Becker sitting next to Lendl. Old times come back again  Winking

Btw, Boris's mother is Czech, so as Boris says, he is by a half Czech tennis player. So, Czechoslovakia cooperation between Marian and Boris come on!  Winking

I can't wait to see what Boris does with Nole.

With Lendl and Murray, there is a certain similarity with their baseline mindset, but Nole and Boris cannot be more different in their style of play.
Nole has already improved his volleying game a lot but at the same time has still a long way to go there, so I suppose that's the obvious area where Becker's expertise is going to come in.
Nole is quite soft insde, so Becker may add a bit of cold German toughness which could help Nole reduce his customary frequent loss of focus before he gets the job done.
If Becker could change just that, it would be a great success!

Some of Boris's famous lines....

“If you start behaving like a beast during the match, I will turn into a bigger beast and I will destroy you.” Becker to John McEnroe.

“When I looked at the eyes of my fans, I thought I was looking at monsters. When I saw this kind of blind, emotional devotion, I could understand what happened to us at Nuremberg.”

“I honestly have no idea what makes me so sexy. I am neither an Adonis, nor is my weenie hyper-dimensional.”

“I could have sex with many women. The same thing happens to me that, unfortunately, frequently happens to women: I am being chased like game. But it’s like with many things: if you can have it all, you’re no longer tempted.”

“They are trying to turn us into money whores. It’s obscene. They say ‘a million’. And then you say ‘No’. And then they offer – because they think everybody has his price – three million. And then you say ‘No’ again. It feels good to know that I don’t come cheap.”

“When you are a young man, you are looking for your own identity, and winning is a way of expressing yourself. When I lost, I wanted to die. And because I thought in victory I became somebody, in defeat, it followed, I was nobody.”

“I didn’t start a war. Nobody died. I only lost a tennis match, nothing more.” Becker’s thoughts after losing in the second round of the 1987 Wimbledon Championships.

"The eyes of some of the fans at Davis Cup matches scare me. There`s no light in them. Fixed emotions. Blind worship. Horror. It makes me think of what happened to us long ago."

"If I go into a club now, all the blonde girls leave my corner and all the black girls come into my corner. It`s as if I`m racist towards white girls!"

"I want to be a hero, a small and good kind of hero, even though I know heroes have very short lives."

"I love the winning, I can take the losing, but most of all I love to play."

I think that Boris will also ruffle a stiff and boring tennis atmosphere made so many tennis stuffy clowns, who say just nothing. I hopefully think that Becker is able to turn around that dullnes and just call the things right names.

Yes, that's going to be great, I always enjoyed listening to him commentate, I particularly love his unfunny German humour, and how hard he tries to speak good English and is pleased when he thinks he says something smart.
On paper, 2014 should be Nole's biggest year, he is entering his prime now.
He's got to make the most of it, anything short of 2 slams will be a bad year for him.

Another Nole-Murray match in Wimbledon next year would be great fun.
Lendl would be the only one of the 4 who never won it....which is quite amazing considering how good he was compared to some of today's clowns who have won it even twice...

Exactly, from this perspective Boris's joining to Nole's team is another logical step nowadays. I am also glad that Marian stayed with Nole. He is so cool and nice man. Thumbs Up

Yes, Vajda has been really good to No,e all these years. I know they have had several bad patches because of Nole's impatience and "love for life".
He has done a great job with him over the last 8 years and sacrificed a lot of his family life (or maybe that was just a great escape route..)

He allowed Nole to grow and mature freely with no added "big name/ego" pressure.
Now that Nole is accomplished, he can handle a coach of Becker's fame and not be intimidated or overawed.
They are both very relaxed as well, so that "family" style atmosphere Vajda carried in Nole's team should continue with Boris.
Vajda will be with Nole in a few tournaments anyway, but majority, incl all slams it will be Boris.

Nicely described and absolute truth. I can't wait how Boris will handle with journalists and tv commentators, e.g. with such a dolt  as Andrew from SKY Sport.

With Tenez on this. This strikes me as a horrible horrible move. I cannot see one angle from which this would look good. To start with, I do not see Becker as coaching material - not for anyone. Also, what specifically is he going to bring on the table? Not game style, not tactics. And at this level you are not hiring a coach to teach you how to volley (plus even if you did, you would be looking for a volley coach, not a volleyer).

Just cannot see anything good coming out of it. The best case scenario is that Boris has no impact and Nole stays where he is now.

noleisthebest wrote:I'd be interested to hear why Becker is a bad choice for Nole.

In the meantime, here are my thoughts:

My first reaction was shock: this could either be great or terrible, more terrible than great, to be honest. I thought, Boris is too big a persona to be able to take a back seat and get his hands dirty in the mundainety of daily coaching grind.
Taking on a number one player entering his prime in a potentially biggest year of his career is a big ask, daunting task, quite a bit of sacrifice and dedication.

Could I imagine a currently bloated and excess-living looking Becker wearing a tracksuit under the beating Melbourne sun in January patiently watching Nole hit his BH practice session?
Only just!
Could a life loving hedonist fit in with a life loving, temporarily gluten-free ascet?
Ouch!
What if things go badly, could Boris be able to support unconditionally?
Mmm...

Then I thought...OK, despite a very precarious timing,  Nole is a clever cookie and he knows what he is doing.
The obvious: volleying, even serving...all these could be moved forward and improved, let's be honest, Nole is a half-baked volleyer at the moment, and we all know too well there can be NOTHING "HALF" when it comes to volleying: you are either in it or not. It's not a tactic, not a plan B, it's YOU!
So, the next thought was, is it Nole?
However much it pains me to say it, the answer is: no. In his heart, Nole is an intelligent, aggressive base-liner.
Having said that, I believe that anyone who likes to boss and hug the centre of base-line in modern tennis has a potential S&V-eyer inside him.
Nole always loved Sampras for it, and 4 years ago hired Martin to start him off on that route. I think the idea was good, but Tod was clearly not good enough for the job.
I then looked at Federer who is closest to where Nole could get in terms of integrating volleying in his game (Llodra is a classic S&V-er, almost zero overlap with Nole's game and skill set), I thought, Fed is a base-liner with a beautiful attacking volleying game.
Obviously, Fed is miles ahead of Nole in volleying department, but Nole likes to come in and I think that is THE MAIN ingredient, he is not scared of the net (he loves it so much he had to touch it in that wretched RG SF!)
He can take the ball early, he is quick, he reads the game very well, surely a bit of work could make him a decent volleyer.
And THIS is where I think Becker will be really helpful: he could inject Nole with the necessary boldness and make his net game smooth and natural, it really is no rocket science!
Still, this will be the most difficult job for Boris.
Anyone who can return serve with such control and precision like Nole should be able to harness balls at the net as well, just a matter of having enough practice.
I am not expecting Nole to turn into McEnroe, but there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to make his presence in the forecourt a strong winning option in his game, and please allow me to fe carried away here - even a weapon!
Those who advocate that his game has nothing to improve are so wrong...
Finally, I have just found out that Nole actually contacted Becker in Beijing, immediately after losing his number one ranking to Nadal.
With Becker's impressive H2H record against his main rivals:

Becker - McEnroe 8-2
Becker - Lendl 10 -11
Becker - Connors 6 - 0
Becker - Wilander 7 - 3
Becker - Edberg 25 - 10
Becker - Noah 4 - 2
Becker - Agassi 4 - 10

Becker surely knows how to win big matches, and yes, Nole has lost some very big matches this year.
It was not because of his tennis, either.
Nole IS a very tough competitor, but as a character very emotional and soft, and I think that Becker would be a great influence on him when it comes to toughening him up a bit on the inside.
I am sure one of the first things Boris will tell Nole will be to forget about pleasing the crowd and needing their (fickle) "love".
And stop clapping opponents' good shots.

So....after that initial black and white reaction, I now think that Nole can only benefit from Becker, worst case scenario, if results don't come, they will part their ways with no damage done.

You will remember my pessimism after the WTF final this year looking onto 2014.
Nole knows Nadal has the physical edge now.
A lot of things seem to be going on behind the WADA & ITF curtains atm, and they don't seem to be favouring Nole. His 5 hour doping test during the DC final doubles match and all that surrounded it are a solid proof.
Nadal seems to be allowed to carry on.

So, something had to be done to make sure he doesn't. Taking the game by the scruff of its neck at the net is a great way of doing it.

GO NOLE!!!!!!!!!!   diva

Novak Djokovic approached me day he lost top spot - Becker
Novak Djokovic approached Boris Becker to become his coach on the day the Serb lost his world number one ranking, the German has revealed.
Rafael Nadal usurped Djokovic, 26, by reaching the China Open final in October, a few weeks after defeating the Serb in the US Open final.
"I was approached by Novak and his manager while he was playing in Beijing," Becker told BBC Sport.

"I was surprised - I didn't expect the phone call. I was very honoured."
Djokovic, who has won six major titles, will start work with Becker before the Australian Open, which starts on 13 January.
The Serb's long-time coach Marian Vajda will continue as part of his team.
Speaking to BBC Sport tennis correspondent Russell Fuller, Becker revealed he had a number of discussions with Djokovic after the initial contact before deciding he wanted to coach full-time.
"This isn't a half-hearted job, it wouldn't be right for him or for me," explained Becker.
"You're in it to win it. You either go at it fully or you don't - either I commit myself or I don't commit myself.
"I said 'I want to meet you and see how much you want it, how much that fire is burning inside you, how much is left, and what I can bring to the table'."
Despite winning seven titles in 2013 and beating Andy Murray in the Australian Open final, Djokovic lost not only his number one spot but two Grand Slam finals as well - the four-set US Open defeat by Nadal came after a straight sets loss to Andy Murray at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic's new coach Boris Becker wins Wimbledon in 1985

"He had a couple of bad losses this year in the finals of the Grand Slams. He's such a winner and wants to win so badly and wants to go into the history books of tennis," said Becker.
"The fact Nadal has taken over and Murray has moved up a gear, he was left behind a little bit - I'm talking on a really high level, the last five or 10% that maybe has been missing for whatever reason.
"He decided he needed somebody in his corner that had been there and done it, and that's why I'm coming in."
The arrival of Becker on Djokovic's coaching staff will put him against Ivan Lendl, Murray's coach, who Becker beat three times in Grand Slam finals.
"When Ivan was appointed, I thought about what took some of these guys so long to talk about some of these all-time greats," added Becker.
"There was a generation that really changed tennis and the way we played in the 1980s is not that different to how we're playing today."

Yes, Becker seems to be already loving his new job, lapping up the limelight galore!
I like the fact he sees it as a personal challenge and wants to give it a decent shot, looks like it's almost playing matches with Lendl all over again Laugh !
Let's see:
Lendl coaching Murray
Becker - Nole
Edberg (matter of time I reckon) - Fed
Brugera - Gasquet
Chang - Nishikori...

Who have we got left?

Borg - Gulbis
Wilander - Nadal
Mac - JJ
Courier - Berdych
Agassi - Nadal
Sampras - Stan....

The best coach for Federer unquestionably would be Sampras.

Why " unquestionably"?
Why Sampras?

Federer's best coach would be unquestionably a good physio and or surgeon.

Yes, why Pete? What has Pete that Federer has not got? At least Edberg has possibly better volleys that Federer....I say possibly cause Edberg would have struggle like hell to get to the net nowadays...and those loopy spinny, deeping balls are much harder to volley than the straight forward balls he was getting back then.

Edberg was done after 1994 (last slam final Jan 93) and Sampras knows more about the modern game. Sampras played the type of game near the end that Federer needs, if Rodge - as much as I love the guy - thinks he can do well from the baseline at 32-33 he's deluding himself. What's so good about Edberg? His game didn't stand up to the modern charge in the mid-90s particularly well when he was only 27-28, I don't believe he strategically knows how to combat/nullify the modern power players. Sampras found ways even late on against a range of guys 10 years his junior. Just think his brand of aggressive tennis is what Federer needs to adopt, sure it's high risk but its also high reward. Depends if Rodge wants year long consistency or a shot at one last major trophy by pulling the trigger more and owning the net. If Pete or Stefan said they were both available who's call do you think Rodge would return? Exactly.

I think Fed would be deluding himself even more if he thought serve and volleying would give him slams again....even less with his current drop of serving pace.

I don't think it is obvious Roger would pick Pete over Edberg. To me Pete only did well cause the pace then was really fast. Essentially because players had not yet got the best of Luxilon strings. As soon as the spin came in and they slowed a bit the conds, Pete could get stuffed by any journey player. His loss at Wimbledon 02 to Basle is typical of Pete struggling on slower conds...which is essentially what is tennis nowadays.

Edberg was more of a natural player, with flair and better volleys than Pete. Pete was essentially very precise and hard first AND second serve. Once that weapon was lessen by slower conds, he was just an average top 10 player. Edberg never had a tremendous serve and he won his slams with a more complete game...as proved his good record on clay too.

I don't think Fed needs a coach.
I can't think of anyone that can tell him anything new.
What he may need is just a good pair of fresh eyes to observe him and throw in an idea, more on a creative than technical level.

Just another artist with a different impressionist's perspective, and Edberg fits nicely in that role.

Fed already has a superb fitness coach to look after his (healthy) body.

Will be interesting to see if he comes back with a bigger frame.
He needs some solution to beat slow conditions against a growing number of "fit" players...could the bigger frame restore his risky shot-making confidence and return him the advantage he used to beat everyone with: his speed, that has now been blunted and almost taken away with slow conditions.

So he seems to be focusing on mental aspects of it; and having someone who also had been there before.

While I still think it is a bad choice, at least I think the focus is reasonable.  Mental strength in tight situations is one thing (perhaps the only one) where Boris can indeed perhaps add something.  I still cannot see how that warrants making him the main coach, but time will tell; maybe I am wrong.

Now we know why he is desperate to see Djoko win!

BTW, another case of a multi millionaire ending up broke....though I am sure that broke must mean something else at this level.

You are cruel!

Yes, broke Boris probably means he had to stay away from IW this year, since his wife must have put her foot down as BB has a bit of a gambling problem and a trip to Las Vegas would have not been the best idea.

Now I can see hiring BB as the worst thing, which could happen to Nole. No improvement in his game, no calm and composure, everything goes the wrong direction with BB since they joined together.
BB is not a good coach for anyone on the tour even for a player of a regional competition. He is what he looks like, a freeloader who convinced himself to coach because of money. He has no traits of right coach or just I can't see any.
Having seen Marian on Nole's bench was the most joyful moments from Nole's match with Ben.
The sooner the better to say thank you and goodbye to BB.

I remember it and understood your point well.

There was a certain hope that BB as a strong personality could give to Nole some additional missing focus for decisive match moments and make him a kind of a tennis killer. But no way that will happen with BB. It is clear that BB's coaching doesn't work (if we can talk about BB's coaching), Nole's composure and focus have gone. Nole-BB is the exact opposite to the well-working couple Fed-Edberg. No doubt about it.

To me it was a clear case of Djoko not able to read Becker. Becker is actually a good analyst of the game but being a coach requires something different, essentially being a supportive team player. Becker is a diva. Was not going to work.

Having said that is the relationship over? Might not be.
