ATP 500/250: Rio, Marseille, Delray
February ticking nicely and somehow less dreary than in previous years...probably because top players are not avoiding smaller tournaments any more.
Tennis must have reached some serious popularity highs for TDs to be able to afford big appearance fees.
We've had 4 top 10 men playing last, Nadal and Stan this and Nole & Fed next week.
We can't complain, can we
ATP500, Rio, outdoor clay

The tournament, distributing a total prize money of US$ 1.5 million (US$ 1.25 million for the ATP) is held on the eight clay courts of the Jockey Club Brasileiro, including a 6,200-seater Stadium. Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer will headline the 2015 event.

The Open 13 is one of five French tournaments on the ATP World Tour calendar, held on the Mediterranean coast in the city of Marseille. Former ATP player Jean-Francois Caujolle was a driving force in bringing a tour-level event to his hometown, and since the inaugural event in 1993, six Frenchmen have lifted the Marseille trophy – Guy Forget-1996; Fabrice Santoro-1999; Arnaud Clement-2006; Gilles Simon-2007; Jo-Wilfried Tsonga-2009, '13 and Michael Llodra-2011.
Players Wawrinka, Raonic, Gulbis, Agut, Simon, Goffin, Monfils, Thiem, Golubec, StrakhovskyPospisil

Delray Beach hosts the world's only combined ATP World Tour/ATP Champions Tour event. The 2014 Champions Tour event featured a Team USA vs. Team International event, including Andy Roddick, Goran Ivanisevic, Mats Wilander and Aaron Krickstein. The tournament is notorious for their fan experience.

Yes, not a good sign...I hope he is not injured.
This was a perfect tournament for him although the field is very strong.

Marseille has a very strong field for a 250 tournament this year. Will Mr. Gulbis get past the first round for a change. I read a comment by someone that after the RG semis last year he has only won 9 matches in 10 months. Is this true? I know this year he lost in his opening match in all 3 tournaments he participated.

Did anyone see pictures of Nadal in Rio?
Hope looks so old for his age...esp around his eyes.

Vesely destroying Fognini!
And that's on clay...
Btw, did anyone see balls in Rio?
They look bigger than usual (maybe it's the colour, they look more yellow than lime) but incredibly light and bouncy, almost as if made of sponge...
On a different note, Olympic Games in Rio will be played on hard courts, same surface as AO.
Apparently, Nadal not happy

Fed skipping Miami but going full on with clay season, 5 tournaments...including the first time ATP 250 in Istanbul!
http://www.sportinglife.com/tennis/news/article/553/9718830/tennis-roger-federer-signs-up-to-play-in-inaugural-atp-istanbul-open
Clay tennis can be so beautiful. Just saw a bit of Fognini-Vesely, Fognini is made for the surface, just knows how to play on it, one of the vest players to watch on clay.

No wonder he lost it and crumbled in that AO final....he was probably trying to remember one line and lost concentrationnoleisthebest wrote:Andy Murray's notes from Rotterdam leaked into Dutch press...amazing to read and see how he thinks!

Terrible for vesely. Just read he was 6/3 up in the 2nd set TB......3 MPS wasted!
Those kind of losses stay in your head for ever and might damage his career in a big way!

He won the first set comfortably (didn't see it), then in the second Fognini went 4:1 up, I saw a few games...it was very hot and Vesely struggled to move, didn't even bother on some balls.
Fognini drained him with drop-shots a few times and that was it.
Vesely did well to even make it to TB.

Maybe but he he was 6/3 up in that TB. I have seen him collapse a couple of times before that.....It's a bit of a shame as i think he has that modern game which could tear the retrievers apart.

These clay tournaments in Latin America are a real joke compared to European.

Yes, you're spot on there.
I was watching Rola vs J. Sousa (I discovered in the meantime there are two of them with the same name and similar age/ranking!) last night...
Sousa was just raw in everything : the way he played, the in-your-face way he tried to engage the impassive local crowd (his own compatriots!), the half-crazed trance he was in...it was his moment, his Centre Court, his Wimbledon final...
Though he was bordering on gamesmanship with his despair to win, I'm happy for him. It can't be easy to start there...esp in this physical era of The Show, where your TD will sell his own countrymen to "accommodate" The Big Rafa...
But, it's all the same circus anyway...Given the opportunity J. Sousa would gladly so the same.
Times have changed...or at least their blatant appearance of the soul destroying ways of money.

Match of The Day:
Nadal-Fognini
this is where we get to see a proper match (hopefully not fixed, though you can never be too sure with Fognini )
He has been playing really, really well this week, composed and focused. No smashed racquets. Even though he lost the 2nd set TB 13:11 last night.
another one to see is the WTA Dubai final:
Pliskova -Halep
Pliskova, a real tigress on the court (I forgive her the few tattoos) fantastic FH, great fighter, zero muscle, no grunting, pure shot-making on the menu!
