Merry Christmas! Empty Merry Christmas!

Post by noleisthebest on Sat Dec 21, 2013 5:19 pm

It's here again...Christmas!

It means different things to all of us: we'll eat lovely food, give presents, laugh, walk, talk, sleep, watch old films...
I have decided to do something I have never done before on Christmas Day - play tennis, hoping it's starts to snow in the middle of it!

Merry Christmas! A261274

Dear Santa, santa

I've been such a good tennis fan this year.
Everyone's talking about economic crisis so my wish-list is very small....
Please may Nadal win zero slams in 2014!  Gift

Yours sincerely,

NITB diva

MERRY CHRISTMAS dear OTF-ers!  cracker

Merry Christmas everyone. Honestly I don't follow any particular religion as such, but I completely enjoy the festive spirit and the food.

Not posting enough, but managing to read a few here n there.

Not quite the Christmas topic (only indirectly - anything but wrapping up the presents atm!  Whistle )

Apparently they are going to have "lively" balls in AO 2014 and Woodbridge claims they are made for Nadal and Stosur.
I don't know how lively balls can help Nadal as he struggles with fast and light balls (at least that's my definition of lively).
High bounce is one thing, but the speed of the ball another...
Just wondering now, are they also going to enlarge the area behind the baseline where he can safely "attack" from 10m behind it....

Fast high bouncing balls- Nadal won't mind that.

He'll be the first one to moan if the balls do turn put to be fast.
That's why the players were given a month's notice, as a lot of them complained in Paris and Beijing.

Wood bridge is a very good tennis analyst. If he says it is going to help Nadal....it most likely will. I am just hoping for a terrible weather.....and a covered court.

It will help Nadal against everybody apart from Djokovic + Del Potro, against those two the fast high bouncing balls will actually hinder him.

I feel sorry for Nadal that it is the most important factor to him winning or losing. Says a lot about his lack of ability.

Just came back from my Christmas tennis, it was fan-tas-tic!
I wore my special Santa dress and hat, it was such fun to play.
No wind at all, not too cold, birds chirping and singing away....
I even got a Christmas present from my partner!
I thought she and I would be the only ones there, but we were soon joined by a couple who lasted only half an hour parting with a comment: "We must have had a lot more champagne than you!"
So, a lovely experience I recommend to everyone smiley

What have you all been up to today?

Probably the most ridiculous line I've heard from OTF (apart from the Genesis stuff) pmsl

Firstly who said it was most important? It actually matters more to very tall players like Isner and Karlovic who struggle to deal with low slices, Nadal is actually pretty agile compared to them.

Didn't get to see either matches, but the highlights look interesting, Tsonga seems to be bringing S&V-ing back in vogue:

This break felt quite short.  We barely finished the last season and here we are with a new season exho already, and tennis proper starting in a couple of days.

Cannot believe AO is only 2.5 weeks away.  That means going to bed early, and waking up at 3-4am for me.  I kind of like that, though with my advancing age it seems to be getting harder and harder to keep it up Sad

Same questions as we have had the last few years.  Will it be Nole or Rafa at year end?  What about Andy?  What can Fed still do this year?  Any youngsters finally breaking through (is it too much to ask for at least one GS final from them)?

I see some hope for the youngsters if the current top 3 suffer form injury/ blip in a slam.

To me the break didn't feel short, but I managed to survive it a bit better than last year mainly because the weather has been miid and good for playing.
I looked forward to seeing some tennis so much, so thetwo clips from yesterday was all I could manage to in between the Christmas "schedule" of cooking, shopping entertaining and visiting.
I enjoyed seeing flairful and playful Tsonga a lot and then froze with horror when I saw Ferrer look fitter than Nadal bluegeoning poor Stan in the most no-frill down-the-middle-unimaginative-forehand into an error. It was so ugly I could only endure two points....
I thought with Ferrer spllitting from his coach of 15 years Pilates, who was a fitness freak, he would chill out, but no!
Ferrer is here to stay  Yikes
As for youngsters, bit of gutsiness will never go amiss, Raonic and Dimitrov have zero excuse to scramble along the baseline.
I look forward to Fed's 2014 very much as he seems to be raring to go.
Not to mention the red hot Nole-Becker team.

Somehow, I managed to miss all the tennis action today, but the results were a bit of a surprise:
Murray beat Stan rather convincingly in straight sets, so that's Stan's 2nd loss in as many days.
Ferrer beat Nadal in straights as well (6:4 6:4), so don't know whether that's because Nadal didn't have the guts to face Nole or couldn't handle the fast conditions in Abu Dhabi (or both).
Nole-Becker partnership started with a win over Tsonga in straight sets.

Look forward to watching these clips in a minute:

Nole-Tsonga (the whole match in 4 clips)

Nadal-Ferrer (highlights):

Murray-Wawrinka (highlights):

Nole wins in Abu Dhabi by beating Ferrer in the final.
Sadly, it's almost strange to see a nice fast court and how it rebalances the role of defending.
I am not surprised Ferrer beat Nadal with ease yesterday.
In a few points he chose to unglue himself from the baseline, Nole looked very good.
In a few points he did not shorten the volleys, he must have been grateful for the speed of the court, anything but almost perfect volleying is so easily punished in current sandpit conditions.
It is a stark reminder of how horribly slow the courts are in ALL ATP tournaments now.
TDs, led by Larry Ellison should hang their heads in shame.
