Roger Agonistes
This will sound weird, but I wondered this summer whether Roger's haircut robbed him of some of his powers. Mammals are all about hair, and we get a tremendous amount of environmental information through hairs of various sorts. When Roger cut off the bouncy bits he lost one of his proprioceptive sensors that might have affected the fineness of his balance and timing.
I'm happy to see the curls are back.

I am not foreign to those kind of thoughts though I must say this one did not come to mind.bluenose wrote:This will sound weird, but I wondered this summer whether Roger's haircut robbed him of some of his powers. Not sure what the dolphins would have to say on that one, though.bluenose wrote:This will sound weird, but I wondered this summer whether Roger's haircut robbed him of some of his powers. Minor inconsistency aside, are you suggesting Fed should go back to this look just to get even more environmental input. With playing conditions being slower than ever he'll need every bit of help for that last hurrah in which he brings the house down.

Two words - vibrissal follicles. Ain't evolution grand! And so with Roger; experience and practice clearly allowed him to refine his sensory system most admirably!

Re: Roger Agonistes
I've got my own enviromental anecdote to add here....
Whenever I play, a large kite flies over the court.
Now our club has two sites, one is the main part where the clubhouse is, but we also have two courts half a mile away, in the park.
So this bird flies above both sites.
Not only does it fly over those courts when I play, it sometimes also flies over me when I'm cycling to the club.
So, I have now grown to believe that the bird flies there to see how I am doing and say hello.
I have given it a name. No, it's not Nole.
So when He (it is a he, don't ask how and why!), flies over, I take the eye off the ball, smile, wave and even say hello! And I try to hit my best backhand.
(who cares what the person across the net thinks )
So you can imagine my distress when he didn't show up one week...
I started questioning myself: is anything wrong with my game, maybe he didn't like me missing that stupid easy shot....
But he was back today. He said nothing, but I knew he was happy, he flew over three times!

Here's my tribute to Federer...the best Federer photo ever...and IMO best tennis photo ever too.
Just look at that pose and right arm follow through...what a shame we'll never see the like of this again

Yes excellent picture! So symbolic too as he has no opponent on the other side of the net. Though seeing how high the ball is over the net, must be Nadal somewhere returning from fetching a ball from the people's seats.

I see his opponent Look near his sock. And yeah... that pose says it all about Federer. It oozes ability.

To me the grey skies and the gathering storm are a nice metaphor and background to the story this photo is trying to tell.
The invisibility of the opponent as the irrelevant factor only adds to it.

Exactly NITB, plus the contrast of flapping flags and dark, brooding skies in the background with the fluidity of movement and shining sun in the foreground. An absolutely stunning photo on so many levels, even Federer's gear and hair, etc, look cool.
Just so you know its 2006 RG, this match is vs Alejandro Falla - but who cares about the Columbrian, its all about Roger here.
You'll not see a better tennis picture for the next 30 years I bet.
