ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, London, indoor hard
Best Of The Best
Only the best eight singles players and best eight doubles teams of the season qualify for the prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which will be staged at The O2 arena in London for a fifth straight year in 2013. The singles champion will be presented The Brad Drewett Trophy, in memory of the ATP Executive Chairman and President who passed away on 3 May 2013.
The draw is out and I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!
In group A we have 4 players who have never won this tournament, and have one final between them.
In group B, we have two players with 8 titles and 2 additional finals.
Someone should hang his/their heads in shame for this, it's demoralising and disgusting.
Why don't they just hand Nadal the trophy now and get us all out of this charade and misery....a plastic trophy for his fake, plastic career, of course.
Group A
Nadal
Ferrer
Berdych
Wawrinka
Group B
Djokovic
Del Potro
Federer
Gasquet

That is ridiculous ..If they had wanted to make it easier for Nadal they simply could not. So annoying once again. It's like today...playing Ferrer....what a joke!

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
Shedule of play is coming out tomorrow.
Does anyone know at least whether group A or B open on Monday?
It's logical that group A start first, group B is so good all 3 days off RR should be great, I reckon group A is going to have O2 half-empty.

I think one reason to trick the draw (if that's the case) is to make sure nadal goes deep in the tournament....and If the organisers want that it's not because they love him it's because the crowd do! So I think you can expect as much crowd if not more for his group than for the other......imo.
However I agree the tennis fans are more likely to be attending the Novak group.

Yes, I think the draw does not necessarily make it that much easier for him to win WTF. He is almost guaranteed a tough SF now, while winner of group B may end up playing Ferrer in their SF.Tenez wrote:But as some sais it might give Nadal a tougher semi....which is good.
However, the draw does make it easier for him to secure YE #1 spot. Even if Nole gains maximum possible points (Paris/London/Davis Cup), Rafa only needs to win two round robin matches to be #1. If he had Roger and Delpo in his group, he could have conceivably lost to both of them. However, it is hard to see him losing two matches in his group now.

Even if nadal losses to Ferru again, he's most likely to win vs Berd & Wari. Looks like he's almost guaranteed the YE #1 spot with these 2 potential RR wins, but unlikely to win the title match vs any of the Group B top 3.

Actually they have 2 finals between them. Nadal 2010 and Ferrer 2007 .noleisthebest wrote:

But it still looks a ridiculous draw heavily one sided.

Again the heart over the mind Rotla! I admire your courage.
I'd say Wawrinka (2) & Nadal(1). (Ferrer happy with his final in Paris will be too tired to fight this week.
Then Delpo(2) v Djoko(1). Fed with a good chance though.

Tomorrow:
Nadal & Fed
Is it correct?

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
Hope you are right but I understand that Nadal is over 1400 ahead of Djokovic this morning. If he wins one RR he will be over 1600, with only a max 1500 to take for Djoko.
Maybe Nadal is going to lose some DC points...that's the only reason I can think of.

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
I think I understand. Nadal gets a 0 on a 500 tournament for not having played one post USO. It means he drops 300 points (the lowest 500 played).
So he is "only" a bit more than 1100 points ahead of Djoko.
What I don;t understand is that the 300 points have not dropped yet.
=========================
PS...Wrong actually he did play Beijing (after USO)...so I 'd lke to know where you read he needs 2 RR wins. I can only one as being needed.

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
The latest I read is this:
"If Rafael Nadal, who is ranked No. 1, wins two matches at the World Tour Finals, which begin Monday in London, it will be enough to clinch the year-end crown.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/04/sports/tennis/djokovic-rallies-twice-against-ferrer-to-win-paris-masters.html?ref=todayspaper
(NB: I’ve posted this link in the more relevant NOVAK DJOKOVICH thread earlier.)
What about Basel? Were some points not deducted from nadal when he skipped there?

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
If Nole wins ALL his matches in London (1500 points) and not just his 2 matches, but the team DC win, ( 275 points) and Nadal wins only one match in London, THEN and only then will Nole be number one by a margin of 5 points.
But I don't see what the big deal about it is now.
Nole has lost his top spot on his best surface, American hard courts, a bit late to fix it now, still, good that he's back on track.

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
Today morning when driving my car to the work and listening the radio I hear how Berd feels well in London, how he loves the arena and the whole event and how ready he is for upcoming fights.
So, Stan did surely well when beating bigmouthed Berd. I could not watch their match, just heard about Stan great serve.
So, perhaps Berd will convince us that he only let his mouth speaking and let his racket speak on the court in next matches. Berd should watch Rosol's matches sometimes, or at least that one which was close to London two years ago

It's so good to see games and sets won thanks to winners and creative points as opposed to UEs drawn out of long rallies.
I am glad to see Gasquet play well but I want a Federer/Delpo and Djoko being one and 2 so that Nadal doesn;t get a too easy semi which he will get if he plays Gasquet.

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
I like the "new" , mature(r) Gasquet, he is not as nervous as he used to be, he is making a lot more of his ability these days, and seems to have improved serve, as well.
I'd really like him to win at least one match in London, it would mean so much to him, although he does not strike me as a player who thrives on confidence.
He''s got his little mannerism routine and once he does it he restarts his mind.
His BH is amazingly reliable, and although nowhere near as beautiful and magical as Fed's, still, quite an outstanding shot.

What a shame....you're right, his FH really let him down today, he was almost scared of hitting it, and I don't know why, he gets such great power off it.
He is so brave with his BH and a complete opposite with the FH.
But at least he can hold his head high as he is a proper tennis player, not a scrambler and a fitness freak.
That stands for a lot these days.

"The French Open is always going to be hard as long as Rafa Nadal is around. But on the other surfaces, if I am playing well, it’s more on my racquet than on anybody else’s racquet."

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
After all the props and pushing he has been receiving for years, Nadal has the cheek to say this:
"One of the big reasons is I have not always been a fantastic player on indoor. Just a few times have I been able to play at a high level on indoor. The third thing is because I feel like I am unlucky. During these nine years the Masters Cup was on indoor, a surface that was not the best for me. So probably for me I was a little bit unlucky in this because in the past we had the Masters Cup on other surfaces. I understand, but I think this is unfair."
Can he sink any lower in his blind selfishness?

Re: ATP World Tour Finals LONDON 2013
And why is Indoor not a good surface for him? In fact he plays better on it than on any other surface cause it's much easier to time the ball there than on clay and more so, outside clay. His problem however is that the other players who bank on much smaller margins than him play even better than him.noleisthebest wrote:After all the props and pushing he has been receiving for years, Nadal has the cheek to say this:

His game is about destroying his opponents thin margins amd in that respect, it's harder to do when the element does not interfere.
I was actually thinking this watching Berdych and Wawrinka and then Gasquet...how much easier it is for a SHBH to play indoor as their racquet sweet spot is smaller, having a regular bounce certainly helps...more than if you have a DHBH....In short indoors, evens up a bit.

Very good point, plus his safe game is not heavily dependent on perfect timing anyway, he needs it once in every 20 shots...and even then, when he goes for the line with that wide CC FH, it's so well-drilled he can probably hit it blindfolded with the opponent safely half-dead/exhausted on the opposite side of the court.

The thing is hitting regyularly close to the lines with so much spin is not nearly as hard as hitting close to the lines with flatter shots, especially when the ball played comes already with lots of spin.
I am not sure this is a concept many tennis fans do understand. What I mean by this is that Nadal's crosscourts shots are actually dead easy....if you have a big arm and have executed it for years. His footwork is the most difficult part in that shot.
