ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
Nadal pulls out of Basel, anyone surprised?
"Hi all, sorry to announce that I won't travel to Basel in Switzerland but after very exhausting weeks I have to regroup my fitness and my body. I will do my best to come back to the Swiss Indoors next year."
http://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/sport/story/248901.html
That gives Nole a realistic chance of recapturing number one in Paris.

More on both tournaments later

Berdych-Federer hopefully will materialise in the semi.
That would be a fun match, Berdych knows how to wind up home crowds.
Edit: I thought it may be a final, hence NITB's comment below

No, because they are in the same half of the draw, it will have to be Federer-Del Potro.

Re: ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
Fed admits playing through pain and injuries this year was a mistake:
"With hindsight, I shouldn't have done. They were errors."
...and for the umpteenth time, dispels any retirement talk:
"As long as my body and mind is ready to go to travel, and I'm happy to be doing what I'm doing, I'm successful. I'll be playing for some time and that hasn't changed due to a tough six months right now.
I definitely think it's an advantage playing at home. I'm here to try and play well and qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, but the focus is totally on this tournament. I'll take it step-by-step this week in Basel and in Paris. Mentally, I'm starting to focus on the first match and I hope it's going to go well for me.
Playing at the Rio Olympics is something I'd like to achieve. That doesn't mean I'm going to end my career there, or earlier or later. It's just an idea."

Re: ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
I have just realised, Basel actually starts in earnest today, with
Fed playing Mannarino at 17.30.
followed by
Dolgopolov vs De Schepper
Yesterday in qualies, HPM beat Berankis (in 3 with a customary TB in the middle which, this time, Berankis managed to win), Becker beat Strakhovsky and kamke thrashed Sock.

Re: ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
Isn't this stubborn from Fed nitb? Playing through injury and worsening both his injury and confidence in the upcoming matches? That's why I say, he is also stubborn in a lot of rallys where just refuses to backdown in a point no matter what.. and this at many times have costed him the match.noleisthebest wrote:Fed admits playing through pain and injuries this year was a mistake:

I just hope Fed wins Basel and has to go though potentially all the players his draw can give him; Should be a good confidence booster for Paris, London
Else this year he might just get 1 ATP250 title this year .

Re: ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
I wouldn't call it stubborn at all, rotla.
Back injury is different from most because it comes and goes or gets worse during the day.
On the other hand, if you've got inflamed tendons and ligaments you just have to rest them, or if they are not too bad, you can play through pain and just delay healing.
Sports injuries are rarely debilitating, unless you break or snap something, you can always play, in fact, there is even a certain pleasure in it as the muscles warm up and the pain subsides, you think you've got away with it until the body cools down.
Had Fed won those matches, he would have had no regrets.
But because he lost them and all the media questioning and palaver that followed, it caused him more grief than its worth.
If he was a nobody in a local tennis club, he would not be having any regrets playing injured and losing.
When you've got the fire for the game roaring inside you, only being carried away on stretchers can stop you, or in Nadal's case...fear of losing.

Re: ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
And we can, just as Fed, only be clever and comment with hindsight.
Having lost early in Wimbledon and looking for ways to get some more matches under his belt and try out the new racquet, playing in Gstaad probably did not look such a bad idea at the time.
I remember he said he was literally thinking of pulling out until the very last minute before the match, but chose not to.
That gives you an idea that he thought he could play even through a probably acute backache flare-up which at the time was almost certainly numbed with painkillers.
And he probably chose to do it because he got away with it in the past.
This time, he had that booming serving Brands on the other side and things just did not work out.
Not a big deal for anyone else, but when you are Roger Federer, the world breaths with him and watches his every move, and because of impatience, often blows things out of proportion.

Re: ATP 500: Basel, Valencia (The Draw Is Out)
Tomic successfully continues his beaten-in-the-first-round streak.
After three Frenchmen in a row: Chardy, Benneteau & Gasqauet, Jack Sock last week, it's Dr Misha that does the job this week (Tomic won the first set and retired being 1:4 behind in the 3rd).
What a guy....

Lots of slice from Fed's BH. A sign of lack of confidence for sure here. Maybe rotla convinced me.
Not convinced by what I saw but not terrible either. Only saw the last set.

Istomin blew his chances in the second game of third set (BPs 0/4). Federer showed atrocious play (missed OH smash). Lots of errors. The second set was better from Federer (Istomin was 0/0 in BPs in second set).

Thanks LF. That's a lot of RPM for a BH slice. I also noticed Fed's wrist band...does he usually wear one? I usually play lots of BH slice when my elbow hurts or lack of confidence.

He throws one into the crowd every time he wins a match. . The slice and the return are the most visibly different shots that that show his confidence or lack thereof.Tenez wrote:I also noticed Fed's wrist band...does he usually wear one? I thought Fed looked fine, all things considered.
A few more matches under his belt, a bit more fine-tuning and he should be on his way.
Pospisil having another good run, beat Karlovic in two easy sets.
I hope Dolgo beats Dimitrov.
I don't know who gets on my nerves more: him (being overhyped) or his girlfriend, what a pair!

I find it hard to believe that Bruguera put as much spin as Nadal without those new luxilon typr strings.

Where do I start...
Why oh why... (and once more just for good measure) OH WHY do people measure substance and future with money
Dolgo is priceless, a complete treasure of a player. What he does with a ball and the way he approaches it is nothing short of spectacular.
He is one of the very few players that makes tennis worth watching these days. Dimis - there are shoveloads of...
Do you really think Dolgo can't play like Dimitrov and scramble left, right and centre...of course he can, he is far more talented than Dimitrov. But for him tennis is first joy and thrill and then money. He's probably made enough to keep him in fast cars and an odd download from Itunes (and whatever else takes his fancy).
Dimitrov is so fake and calculating, right down to the choice of women he hangs around with, everything about him is "success".
He can't even walk properly. His gait is just so unappealingly backward for an athlete, on a par with Murray.
His tennis is boring, and so is he, not much of persona, wit or anything to distinguish him from the sea of others in the ATP pond.
To me, he is just a little more interesting than Granollers. The only thing I like about Dimitrov is that he kept his SBH (but unfortunately his game does not reflect it at all) and his resilient belief.
A good and smart coach may transform him and hone a decent game, but not Rasheed.
And the most unforgivable...the baby fed tag....what an insult, there is more Fed in the tip of Dolgo's little finger then in 5 Dimis put together.....

So disappointing though. it wasn't even close. Dolgo had no control of the ball and made too many ufes. Maybe just one of those off-days......Dolgo is priceless, a complete treasure of a player. What he does with a ball and the way he approaches it is nothing short of spectacular.
