No one can play this type of tennis like Delpo can, it's simply great.
But i do see a danger here, Delpo is already going for a little too much. And that's where NAdal wants him..

New balls and Delpo knows how to use 'm: 3 aces in that last game
6-2
I think it's kinda Delpo's advantage that Nadal starts serving in the second.

Really nice play there from Del P, even as a Nadal fan I must admit that the Argentinian thoroughly deserved that set.

Where’s the miraculous and unbeatable Nadal from USO and pre-USO? You’re running as well as ever so you can’t lie about any knee issues. VAMOS RAFAAAAAA........, prove me wrong that you can do it without your PEDs.

Absolutely, Delpo fires like nobody else. There is no chance for Nadal to outplay him from BL. Nadal is going to attract Delpo to the net and just make him run. Hopefully Delpo`s serve will still work well.gallery play wrote:No one can play this type of tennis like Delpo can, it's simply great.

SR, he played really well yesterday against Wawrinka.
I think credit should be given to Del Potro, he's hitting the ball so hard and so well.

It's funny to see how stressed out is the tournament director to see Nadal possibly going out. He really is teh ticket seller.

Oh, THAT!Typical Nadal gamesmanship. So expected. At least he hasn't yet called a fake MTO, not that any dirty tricks would help the way Delpo is playing.gallery play wrote:So you really think there was something in Nadals eye?SR wrote:I don't understand this. could you elaborate? Well deserved win for Del P
Nadal did not play badly, but he did not take his chances (I think 0 out of 7 BPs or something). Del Potro took his chances better meanwhile.

Fantastic from Delpo. How he can hit the shots he hits and still look like he is playing well within himself I do not know. It would be good to see him getting closer to the top guys; especially now with Fed likely dropping out some fresh(er) blood is needed up there.
Really happy with the result. Such a nice start to my morning.
Hopefully Delpo can take care of Novak tomorrow too.

If not for injury I think Del Potro would have had a great chance of winning the USO this year.

He would have had a chance, but he still needs to show he can win again at the very biggest stage. He came up short against a not-so-great-playing Nole at Wimbledon. But I certainly hope he can win some more slams.Julia Santamaria wrote:If not for injury I think Del Potro would have had a great chance of winning the USO this year.

It's not so much the big stage that concerns me for Delpo.....it's the 5 setters. Not easy for such a tall man....sure he did it once in the USO final but again an even more tired man.
One felt today that had Nadal converted those BPs...he would have won that 3rd set convingly....on lungs' # alone.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Shanghai
Delpo could significantly reduce the size factor if he spent more time inside the court, rather than carry all that weight running/pacing the baseline.
He also needs to try and improve his serve first and utilise that height of his.
If only Paire had Delpo's forehand, aaaaaah......
As things stand, just like Murray, Delpo will need a set of very favourable circumstances in order to win another slam.
It's great to have him "back".

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Shanghai
I actually thought his first serve was great today. Not too many aces but solid enough to dominate from the second shot.noleisthebest wrote:Delpo could significantly reduce the size factor if he spent more time inside the court, rather than carry all that weight running/pacing the baseline.

About his court positioning: you have to take his height into account and his big swing technique too. I don't think you can ask for more than the way he played today.

Delpo played a great match today. What striked me most of the match was Delpo's great return. He practically returned everything, but gradually he lost his body swiftness.gallery play wrote:I actually thought his first serve was great today. It was obvious that Nadal panicked on his serve, amount of DF was quite high and that was a decisive factor in their match.

If Nole is off his serve tomorrow, it may even work against him, though for me Nole is a favourite.
In my opinion, improved serve could raise Delpo's game significantly, I noticed his toss is too high for some reason.
Someone of his height could turn a serve into a real weapon, like Raonic for example who is really 1D compared to Delpo.
Maybe Delpo just doesn't have it in him to move forward, like so many other players, but if I was his coach I'd try to improve his serve.
It will be very interesting to see how Nole handles it tomorrow.
It certainly worked against today's Nadal in the best of 3.noleisthebest wrote: I actually thought his first serve was great today. Not too many aces but solid enough to dominate from the second shot.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Shanghai
@ paul: Yeah, that return was really good. Often straight and pacey to Nadal's FH and NAdal doesn't like that. He opens up his FH side after his serve so he can take the second shot with the FH. But Delpo dumped it too fast there for his liking

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Shanghai
@nitb: he screwed his wrist before so he serves at 85% i guess
For his height he plays reasonable close to the baseline, besides: he has the power to put the ball away from 2 yards behind the baseline.
Sure, he covers many miles, but then again: who doens't these days?

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Shanghai
Mostly agree. That is sort of what I meant but since BO5 and big stage go mostly hand-in-hand these days I was not very careful with my wording. But agree, it is not really the big stage in the sense of the "big occasion" - I think Delpo can handle that pretty well. It is really having to play seven BO5 matches where I am less certain.Tenez wrote:It's not so much the big stage that concerns me for Delpo.....it's the 5 setters.
The only additional caveat is that in the slams, the other players are also more determined to bring the goods, so they may be harder to beat. In that sense, the big stage may matter irrespective of whether BO5 or BO3.
I was also wondering about it, the second set had a bit of a feel of Delpo trying to drag himself across the finish line. In some sense it would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Rafa broken him. But in another sense, I am happy it never got to thatTenez wrote:One felt today that had Nadal converted those BPs...he would have won that 3rd set convingly....

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Shanghai
So sad Delpo lost.
Djoko fans need to understand that Nole's wins over Delpo are quite Nadal-esque.
I'm not automatically rooting for the underdog but from a neutral view i can only say that it's Delpo doing the heroics and Djoko absorbing it till there's nothing left in.
