Marion Bartoli Retires!
Surprise and a bit sad news this morning.
One of the most unique and memorable players that has ever played the game, Marion Bartoli announces her retirement at the age of 28; she says she has fulfilled her dream and that her body can't cope with the pain any more.
"It's been a tough decision to take. I don't take this easily. I mean, I've been a tennis player for a long time and I had a chance to make my biggest dream a reality. I felt I really, really pushed through the ultimate limits to make it happen.
But now I just can't do it anymore."
Her tennis was not elegant, her body not athletic, she was not sponors' pretty girl dream, yet she had the heart of a lioness and fought her battles like few before her did.
I enjoyed watching her live in Roland Garros this spring, even though her long match due to her average serving and all the battling she had to do to make up for it meant I only had the time to see one and a half sets of Nole's match that followed, having to leave early to catch my train.
By winning Wimbledon, Marion has fulfilled her dreams and is now ready for connquering new challenges the next phase in her life will bring.
I wish her all the best, many happy years in good health, a nice husband and a few lively children.
P.S.
Thank you for all the crazy pre-serve rituals, I loved every one!

Either that or failed a doping test. I find the timing quite eery. What she says could also be true but looks to me very much a similar case to Henin.

Re: Marion Bartoli Retires!
That's the first thing that went through my mind as well.
I am amazed at how others such as Errani etc haven't "retired" yet....
Anyway, I'll remember Marion the way I have always known her as: quirky, sweet and and incredible fighter.

Yes I like her too....but may have failed a test at the Wimby final....just too bad advertising to publish it.....especially if she can give other names away.

What needs to happen for doping to end?
Athletes dropping dead every week?

Just kill sport as it is. I am not watching any cycling or track racing for instance. The day money goes and amateurism comes back, doping will be much less of a probleme.
But eradicating it is as utopic as erradicating fraud or cheating in human nature. Impossible as it is part of us.

Bottom line is, tennis once was dope-free. So were athletics, cycling etc, and human nature was sinful then same as it is now.Tenez wrote:Just kill sport as it is. Tennis as a game could revert technology and playing conditions and eliminate/minimise the need for doping, after all it originally never was designed to be endurance athletic discipline doping turned it into nowadays.

Unfortunately we cannot even say that. Certainly not since the open era.noleisthebest wrote:Bottom line is, tennis once was dope-free.

Absolutely. I'm sure Lendl wasn't dope free.Tenez wrote:Unfortunately we cannot even say that. Certainly not since the open era.noleisthebest wrote:Bottom line is, tennis once was dope-free.

Lendl was certainly not a very muscular player nor did he last long and lost many finals for not lasting the distance. He is not the obvious case compared to Becker and many others.
I think it is difficult to speculate on many athletes of that era. They still looked so human compared to today's.

Becker? Maybe. Its hard to sight a doper in a S&V game.

Oh Yes. As McEnroe says Nadal was the physical beast equivalent of Becker.
Before EPO steroids were the main drugs. It gave power quite important for strong arms and legs.

Re: Marion Bartoli Retires!
This retirement is very strange timed indeed. All those injuries didn't stop her from winning Wimbledon. The very peak of her career was only a few weeks ago. That win should have made her curious about what's more in the bag for her. But she lost her motivation instead?! It doesn't make any sense.
