Post by Tenez Mon Jun 24, 2013 7:57 pm

Today I was watching Gulbis v Roger Vasselin from very close by, first row actually. Maria the referee (the one who did the FO final) was sitting next to me and discussing in French to a relative of Roger Vasselin. He was saying where he lodged in London, what kind of travel expenses he was allowed, type hotels etc...It was quite interesting and funny and I beleive he did not suspect being understood. I found it weird that as a referee he was there sitting as a spectator and looked like he was indeed supporting Roger Vasselin.

I also saw the old Bolitieri on his own....in front of the score board for 10mn at least folllowing the score. (I have pictures of both Maria and Bolitieri). It seemed nobody knew or recognosed the old man whose school is behind all those great chanpions.

I saw Paire walk by, Stan training v Norman, Llodra walking by me who I encouraged too....and many others.

Oh and finally when I first arrived to pick up my ticket, there was Judie Murray right in front of me. She glanced at me but did not recognise me. Sad I wanted to say "I am Tenez...you know the famous tennis commentator? Laugh"

Oh and final story....As soon as I arrive I go to court 17th and there was 2 guys playing but suddenly I hear a HHIII  Hannnn.....pretty loud ....so I quickly thought that was Errani as it's the typical sound she makes after her shots....so go to next court (16th) and it was also 2 males (can't remember)...SO I thought I confused her for someone else.....until i went 2 more courts up (14th?) and there I saw the final score showing she had just played there and lost. So I did heard her well...from 4 courts away.....That's how loud they shout nowadays.

On clay when Nadal can essentially play his shots without having to stop or plant down the left leg. Just before the shots he can be still sliding as he makes contact with the ball, this puts much less pressure on his knees.
Of course on clay his movement can be hampered as well, but his knee's deterioration would have to be at a much worse level.

Watch him on clay, he slides as he hits the ball.
There are no jolts, and not sudden twists as he changes direction.

But surely 6 months of intensive clay including long rallies for 5 sets v Djoko is more damaging than a set versus Darcis on grass? Don't you agree?

You cannot hit any backhand without the left leg clay or not. Maybe you should watch him, rather than copy and paste fiction from various ignoramuses around other forums.

This clips highlight exactly what I'm saying. He slides into the backhand just before his shot, the slides the foot out again.
You can't do that on grass unless it has turned into mud.

Obviously you still need your left leg on any surface, I'm not trying to suggest Nadal lifts his leg up like a ballerina/

I said Nadal on clay slides into the shot with his feet rather than having to jolt and twist and turn like on grass, and you posted Utube clips in slow motion which demonstrated that perfectly.

I should be thanking you really.

On the playing conds....it really confirms what I saw yesterday....terribly slow conds. It was very disappointing. It's very clear it;s the balls. Once the grass has gone, the second week, it will be slower than the FO this year.

Yes, the conditions are very disappointing, I really don't know what needs to happen for them to do something about it.
Both Halle and Queens were so,so much better. Wimbledon - almost green clay!

Forgot to post the link confirming what I saw:
Q. Novak yesterday talked about how much slower the courts here had got compared to, say, a decade ago. Have you noticed a significant difference? Do you regret it in terms of the style of your play?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, I regret it more across the board at many tournaments. It's not just here. It's happened all around. I also believe playing styles have changed in the process. But they were, anyway, about to change.

There was more and more baseliners in the game 10 or 15 years ago I thought than ever before.

And then the tournaments started slowing down conditions, as well, significantly. Then that really doesn't give you a big incentive to move forward anymore. It becomes a bit more predictable.

I think it's a bit of a pity, yes, because I think it would be nice to see more players out of their comfort zone more often, as well.

Now you can just play the same game on clay, on grass, on hard courts. That was not really the idea about having different surfaces in the first place

Yes still worst is when even the commentators keep talking about how well some of the player have adapted to playing on grass which required such specialists before. They even said yesterday that none more than Nadal has adapted to this change any better. From Clay -> Grass transition.

Darcis played well, but it wasn't even close to the level Rosol was playing that day last year. He didn't blew off Nadal off the court, just played solid and kept the errors low. Darcis didn't panic and held his nerve especially in the 2nd set when after having 4 set points, he himself was having to defend a set point.

Yes laughable.

As we saw even at the French Open's first rounds, Nadal is never far from being beaten by lower players (Brands, Klizan) and even tere rely on his physique to over basic talents. Yesterday Darcis in his interview stressed the fact he had to win in 3 cause he was getting tired.

Nadal to me is just the most useless "great" tennis ever had, not because I hate him, I don't hate him, but because we clearly see how useless he is without being 120% fit. Most players play with niggles but they still manage to play close matches and get through a few rounds. Nadal has no plan B once his ridiculous fitness become "normal"..

And for those who are talking about his "mental strength" it was so obvious again how panicked he looked in those key points. He lost 2 TBs against player 139. He even served for teh second set.

So who wants to argue again that for fitness players they mental strength is as good as fitness?

II would say Rosol played hard more than well. The hard ball is what panicked Nadal and gave Rosol a second easy shot to put away making him look good, certainly better than he is.

If an opponent cannot cope with pace then he makes you look very good.

Just a quick glance on v2 tells me that BB and Lydian think grass is playing fast this year!!!!

Ridiculous sorry. It was dead slow...observed by most commentators including Nole and Federer.

When you have 10 aces between 2 great servers like Fed and Hanescu on grass one knows grass is dead slow.

Even Rosol's shot look normal yesterday and I was very close to the players.

I thought Darcis played a great match. His serving was excellent, he went for his shots on both wings and his SBH held really, really well.
He was able to create a lot of fantastic angles with it and get Nadal off the court that way.

His volleying was superb and he spent a lot of time at the net, I am pretty sure he hit loads of winners, too.

I never thought Nadal could be beaten by a 5 11" SBH, but it happened, and it was a great watch. Darcis never panicked and that was the key, I was so impressed, I suppose that was the only similarity with Rosol.

Nadal was not THAT bad, he would have won that match had he had say, Lopez on the other side, or any other Spaniard, and you would have never heard about the knees.
His serving was pretty bad, that was the most obvious, and at times he just put on the show as if he didn't want to play, same as Murray used to do, showing openly how the leg bothered him.

That is not Nadal, and I am convinced it was gamesmanship. If he knew he wasn't ready, he definitely would not have entered Wimbledon. He saw the draw and must have thought: easy till the quarters, I'll sail through and then the courts will play into my hands, but NOBODY could have predicted a Darcis win.

So, very strange scenario with Wimbledon again for Nadal.
