London Olympics 2012 - Tennis: The Draw Empty London Olympics 2012 - Tennis: The Draw

Post by noleisthebest Wed Jul 25, 2012 10:42 pm

With the little help of great weather we have had since the weekend, these few weeks of waiting seem to have finally come to an end!
For the Olympics Opening ceremony is on Friday and tennis draw is TOMORROW !!! (12 BST) Cheers

So far, we do not need to worry about the fact that Rosol has not qualified for the Czech Republic team, because Nadal, the gold medalist from Beijing, has pulled out of the Olympics due to not being ready for competition.

We have a draw of 64 players, 6 rounds of elimination.

All matches are the best of three sets except for the men's singles final which are the best of five sets. The tie break will operate in every set except the fifth set in the men's singles
final and the third set in the other matches ,
when an advantage set will be played.

Men's seeds:
1 Federer 9 Monaco
2 Djokovic 10 Isner
3 Murray 11 Almagro
4 Ferrer 12 Simon
5 Tsonga 13 Cilic
6 Berdych 14 Verdasco
7 Tipsarevic 15 Nishiori
8 Del Potro 16 Verdasco

Wild card entries: Hewitt, Bellucci, Posipisil, Devvarman, Ungur, Kavcic, Jaziri, Strakhovski.

The tournament starts on Saturday, 28th of July at 11.30. The final is on Sunday, last match of the day.

Ranking points for The Olympics:

750 Gold medal
450 Silver medal
340 Bronze medal
270 Fourth place
135 Quarterfinals
70 Third round
35 Second round
5 First round

Official ITF website for the Olympic tennis tournament:

The Draw:

There is only one question remaining now, whose half will Murray be in after tomorrow's draw Winking ? (after all, Nole had Fed all the time while they were ranked as number one and number three.....)

Looks similar to what was in wimbledon 2012, with minor differences of course. Murray in Djokovic's half. Ferrer in Fed's. Murray faces Wawrinka in R1, I'm not sure this is what most people in Britain wanted if they were serious about Murray's olympic win.

Some important matches for R1:

1. Fed v Falla : Well interesting considering how close Fed was to equaling another Wimbledon record ( sharing with Hewitt ). It may be closer than it looks on paper.

2. Tomic v Nishikori : Anyone's pick, very likely to go to a 3 setter. Don't know who has an upper hand, but match will be entertaining unless Tomic starts on with his slices.

3. Gasquet v Haase : Good match, very good in fact on paper.

4. Murray v Wawrinka : What an R1 match, this 16 seeding make some very interesting R1 matches indeed.

5. Cilic v Melzer : Youth and form vs Experience.

6. Fognini v Djokovic : Well naah.. easy one for Djokovic.

Gasquet vs Haas definitely the most exciting 1st round match

Just had a look at the draw, its wide open for Fed all the way to the final
Murray and Djokovic to meet in the semi finals,so Fed only has to beat one of them

I can't believe how bad a draw Nole has got. Utter shamelessness.
The victory will be even sweeter, just as it has all of them so far.

Gotta agree the bottom half of the draw is brutal!!
I guess if Nadal was playing he would have been on course to meet Roger on the semi finals

I reckon Nadal would've been in Nole's half in that case.

Still, can't wait for it to start!

I noticed the common mistake people make when they look at the draw: they look at eg. Murray and see Wawrinka, and think, wow, that's difficult draw, let's be honest, what's Stan ever done on grass?
I always look at semis and sometimes quarters, that's where yo see the draws being rigged/tough.
Djokovic has got to beat 3 best players in the draw(apart from himself) in order to win order to win. Plus, he's got Raonic on top.

I first always look at the top and bottom player in each quarter, then obviously the semi finals falls into place, then I look at the earlier rounds
Stan is a tough player,I remember him giving Murray quite a lot of trouble at Wimbledon a few years back, the match went to a tight 5th set,I remember it was one of the very first matches ever played under the roof
Theres more threats to be upset in the bottom half for the favourites then there is in the top half

Stan is good, I agree, and I remember that match, but it was more that Murray made a hash of it than anything Stan did.
Stan is that kind of a player, he'll always push you and make you earn your wins, but his H2H against top guys is poor.
Murray will naturally have to play well and Stan has his chance only if Murray stuffs it colossally, which I don't expect to happen.

I still can't get over how bad a draw Novak got.

Stan is a tough first round match for Murray (or vice versa),in a grand slam they would usually be on course to meet in the 3 round or maybe even fourth

Karlovic pulls out due to injury.

I wonder if that's his silent protest against those 11 foot faults about everyone seems to have gone eerily quiet.... Sad

You said that of late, when Fed’s most expected to win, he loses (e.g., Miami, Halle) and when he’s most expected to
lose, he wins (e.g., IW, Wimby, the 17th). Now I’m afraid to expect too much. All eyes are on him now and he’s the favourite, not dissimilar to his last AO when he failed, even riding the momentum of a victorious WTF. So although on paper his draw looks good,
I'm still nervous. For some reason I felt so much better about his chances in W when he wasn't the favorite.

In a BO3 format Falla and Benneteau could pull an upset. I think even Roddick could
also upset Djoko if they meet (sorry Noley) if Andy plays like he did in Miami beating Roger. :?:
