Tough ones you've got for us today, rotla! Aren't early rounds of a slam meant to be easy?
OK then, what must be done - will be done!
Berdych, Robson, Gasquet, Berlocq, Nieminen.
aaaand: vamos Feliiiiiiiii

If Feli wins, my terrible day with of prediction goes worse. I just somehow manage to make the worst picks. Maybe next time after posting my choices, I should edit it and put the exact opposite.

You are a sentimental fan. You go for your preferred players. One has to have a stoned heart to play these games....like Sphair!

OMG, I think king of clay is seeing Rosol across the net. Brand eerily has a Rosol aura. nadal just double faulted his game away.

Yes Nadal will always be scared by hard hitters. That is essentially the only that beats him when one doesn;t have Djoko's stamina.
This is why I was saying that if he plays Rosol, he may not have it easy either.
What a scrapper Nadal is though!

Brands has had a great run in the last few tournaments and beat some very good players in Munich (lost to Kholi in the semis there), I was expecting decent resistance from him.

What Brands does is even more impressive that he has DHBH....but we all know that Nadal is going to win over the distance still, don't we?
The strange thing is that the greatest clay courter of all time may have had one of the worse clay game ever...but the best stamina ever for sure.

Nadal will most likely recover to win. He's a slow starter. But the point is, has he EVER lost his very first game in RG before? Someone in Vs called Brand "Rosol's twin".

Is he also serving better than Rosol, 5 aces so far to nadal's 1. He's making nadal look really silly.

Folks, gimme a bit more about the Brands-Nadal match, thnx!
Not watching but I'm very surprised by the score so far.
Did Brands had chances to take the third or is Nadal clearly turning things around? (read: Brands is getting tired)

Yup, GP, you guess it. Same story as with Gulbuis, Dimi. Brands tiring and consistency level drops but nadal can still run 10 times more, faster and hit accurately with perfect focus and consistency. He won't have stood a chance without this type of fitness.
But I don't know how he can beat Djoko having such a hard time vs Brands.

Re: Roland Garros 2013: MOTD : Day 2 27/05/2013
Yes Brand hit simply very hard. FH, BH and seemed to find the time to compose himself and play teh right shot at the reight time. He was 3/0 up in that 2nd set TB and made a couple of easy mistakes with Nadal being a bit lucky with a net call. 2 sets to love could have had a different outcome...yet you knew that it woudl be difficult for Brand to keep that kind of tennis. The shots were simply too hard for Nadal and once again he had trouble handling that pace.
Real shame even if we expected it. I don't think Nadal was playing badly at all. SImply that teh shots are too hard for him to control the game...despite his high margins, spinny balls.

The problem is: matches like this only make Nadal stronger. It confirms he can outlast good tennis

Well yes...that's one of the problem. It shows that once again....when moments get tight the riskless player wins 95 % of the time.
This is why I have been saying for years that we should not compare mental strength between an attacking player and a defender. Nadal played gutlessly and in a panick mode for 2 sets while Brands played a gutsy courageous tennis for nearly 2 sets but it's teh gutless player who wins...on clay that is.
It also tells us that Nadal on grass might struggle again.

Berdy-Monf is going good. Monf a set a a Break up. Could this be end of RG13 for Berdych? Hi draw is mighty tough one.
Berdych is hitting some great shots, but on longer run Monfs is making him misfire.

I'd go further to say that he can outlast guys actually playing better tennis than him in the 1st - 2nd set(s). In my mind Gulbuis, Dimi and Brands play better than him even on his turf, shot for shot, when they are equally fresh.

Do you think the outcome would've been different if nadal's match vs Brands today was played on grass?

It's difficult to say for certain but Brands shots on fresh grass would have been extremely tough for Nadal. He most likely woudl have own his serve even more easily, woudl have lost less energy running around and woudl have had easier balls to put away with more UEs from Nadal.
I think we can be certain he woudl have been a 2 sets to love to Brands and then the pressure woudl really have been on Nadal...even more. Let's not forget that on fresh grass, Nadal struggled v Querrey, Petchner, Haase, Youzhny, Rosol and a young Gulbis. None of those guys have particularly done well on grass when not meeting Nadal.
This is going to make this FO and W more interesting than I thought.

Monfils
Berdych gone! Many fed fans see him as Fed's most dangerous opponent on his side of the draw. Excellent effort from 2 sets down but Monfils got the job done with the overwhelming home-crowd support.

Glad Monfils won and he showed why he once was world junior champion. He played aggressive tennis when it really mattered. He was unlucky to have to play it over 5 sets. He was so close to win it in 3 or 4.
Berdych not very friendly at the net.

Not me. Fed's most dangerous opponent is his back. I think Fed has been unlucky of late to play Berdych while under par....including in that last USO where he could not serve properly.SR wrote:Monfils

Berd out!
I am and am not surprised, Monf is one very tough cookie and has just come from Nice final, I knew he'd be good.
I haven't seen the match but am glad to hear he played attacking tennis, I have always remembered him as an acrobatic counter-puncher...
I loved his and Simon's match I think it was either last AO or USO.
He will be a handful even for Fed.

Watching Monf Berd match highlights, didn't realise it was THAT close, 4 TBs!
Happy for Monf, he was in some dark places during the injury, great he's back, this win in front of his crowd will mean the world to him!
Berd seems to have burnt out and overplayed in the last few months.

Hats off to the French, they deserve all the talented players at the top, there is so much love and passion for their players here, esp the way they cover their matches on TV.
LTA should pay attention and not be in love with their Big boys club mentality....

That's unfair, rotla! I did not get the stuff in time. Can I please have this round as a bye (+0)? I'll make sure it does not happen again, but I'm in a different location and if the stuff is sent in too late, I cannot give my predictions before the matches start... Thanks in advance. If anybody (nitb ) objects, then I'll accept this terrible punishment, but IMHO, I missed already some points by not playing (-0 is conservative )

I understand you might have missed it due to late submission of the matches. We on ocassion relax our rules, so perhaps for you too, unless nitb or Tenez object. With me its toatally fine.
