Really nice to see some new faces in the final stages of tournaments AT LAAAAAST!!!!
I haven't seen the match, just saw the livescore when he was serving for the match at 40:00 and by the time the wretched steam started and all the stupid adds finished, it was all over ATP 1000: Rome - Page 4 1371890812, all I could see was he still had his shirt on, so no ripping tonight.
Apparently the commentator mentioned an incident with a line call that turned the match. Has anyone seen what happened?

Bad loss for Gasquet who I hope remains in top 10 after this week, and who should be winning these matches.
I bet he chose to stand 2m behind the baseline.

Has anyone seen this match?

Yes I saw this match start to end. There were 2 decisions by the umpire that were terrible. One on a BP a clear on-the-line winner from Gasquet was declared out, and even after looking at the mark. It wasn't even marginal, but a clear on the line ball, but umpire completed missed the mark when JJ pointed a wrong mark and circled it.

Even in TB a double bounce return of a drop shot from Gasquet wasn't spotted by the Umpire and it left JJ in smokes.

Thanks Rotla for pointing that out. Amazing how the details can have such an impact on a game. Who was the empire?

Oh, that is so very, very, very baaaad....

I suppose the umpire didn't want another one of the "How many tiiiimes?" moments, the mistake is ultimately his for not watching properly and knowing what mark was the right one.
This case may raise the issue of having hawk-eye on clay courts now.

Terrible way to lose and even more terrible way to win.

9 is still no as late as yesterday when Fed's match was scheduled to start at 9:30 PM.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2013/05/20/Rome-Thursday-Gulbis-Reaction-On-Nadal-Loss.aspx

A good and honest interview from Gulbis.
It's interesting how he can't see that it was him who gave it to Nadal on a plate in that second set by playing that ridiculous service game which included that terrible drop-shot and even more terrible overhead out.

But it's so, so difficult to be focused all the time, and he lost that focus when he needed it most in that match, when he had to close it out and had all the aces in his spiel.

Tactically , he wasted a lot of that positive "pupmed-up" vibe (as he called it in the interview) he brought into the match and won the first set with by getting involved in long and draining Nadal service games, trying to break him.
That lost him the edge a bit and probably made him panic and think more than he should've.
It's all little things, but they all add up.

Tennis is such a very tough game to play, and he is right that you have to beat Nadal, I think Nadal's unweavering focus is one of his greatest strengths and it showed again today.

His tennis is so average, but that ability to play like a robot with no focus blips and get you in that split second when you do lose focus, that is so demoralising, because as Gulbis said, he was a better player but he still lost the match.

I love the way Nole beats Nadal at his own game, letting Nadal "attack" with his forehand, keeps him on edge with his BH and drains him of all energy, probably the only player Nadal panics and loses the confidence against and as a result - misses.

And Rafa strikes back!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veirps-fSvM&feature=player_embedded

I must say I liked this interview, but couldn't help smiling when he said how he "lets" umpire check the mark if he (Nadal) is not sure it's out.

Very good assessment of Gulbis, and good advice given to him: to stay calm, and to pace himself through the match (i.e. don't exhaust himself mentally and physically trying to break and then find himself flat and losing focus when it matters).

I understand Gulbis frustration. It's very annoying to lose due to own mistakes....and more so when so many mistakes are down to panick and that panick is down to knowing that shots have to be good otherwise they come back.

AT my poor level I have had so many similar matches or result. Losing to players I have bagelled a few times.

There is something wrong with Grano's mouvement. I noticed it against Murray actually and here it's even clearer.

I am not a fan of Grano...but he is not as bad as he looks.

I didn't notice anything. I don't watch him so no idea how he plays when he plays "well".

Paire was superb and made Granollers look the way he looked: slow, clueless and talentless.

Yes...it might be due to his parting with IMG (BTW its founder McCormack died yesterday). IMG has all the contacts with sponsors, TDs, etc.....

I have officially given up!

My intuitive choice of the song for this thread gave me the uneasy feeling from the very start, I now know why.
Still, all this will not matter if Nole wins in RG

Yes but this is what already happened in 2011. Federer went on to help Nadal win his 6th FO!!!

Djoko was really standing way back scrapping left and right in that match today. He must have lost his confidence. But it also confirms what some of us have been saying for a while....Unlike Nadal, Djoko's ball rarely trouble his opposition....his strengtth is about bringing teh ball back while forcing some running. Berdych will have much more trouble timing Nadal's ball and hit winners from tomorrow.

Having said all that...with the gulbis match in mind yesterday...is clay/balls gone faster recently?

got back and saw Djokovic lost. Very surprised. I saw the first set and half and Berdy looked to easily lose it especially when he was 2-4 down in 2nd set after losing the first 2-6 and still struggling to hold games.

Good for him.

Gulbis can make every court look fast.

I actually think it's the camera position too: the court seems long from what we see, like a tunnel. The camera is probably high yet close to the court. So they have to adjust the screen a bit.

Yes, Ferrer served for the 2nd set at 5-3 but due to severe choking throw it away. He played well to create a set point on Nadal's serve at 30*-40. And what a point he played to win it 6-4.

Ferrer now do what he should have done man many times. Just don't choke for once.

Having said all that...with the gulbis match in mind yesterday...is clay/balls gone faster recently?

Gulbis can make every court look fast.

I actually think it's the camera position too: the court seems long from what we see, like a tunnel. The camera is probably high yet close to the court. So they have to adjust the screen a bit.

Yes the camera certainly can but Berdych shots were really hurting Djoko too.

Also amazing how even Ferrer has better shots than Nadal. Even when Nadal serves...he ends up retrieving v Ferrer.

Ferrer can win today.

That point was enough to keep you out of a depression for 2 weeks NiTB.
Nadal totally got Nadalized

I saw two Berd-Nole matches live, Berd hits the ball with very little net clearance, they are real bullets, so very hard to retrieve those when he is on a roll.

I thought Nadal had 3 overheads and a dropvolley but Ferrer got it and passed the bully

Mother Nature itself was so gutted that she came to his rescue with a net call to give him a bit of confidence.

Funny thing, Ferrer actually has more chance to beat Nadal than Gulbis, just because he does NOT have as much talent, so is bound to be focused and just hit back until he drops....

If he had half of Gulbis's ability, poor Ferru would've been in the Hall of Fame by now ... Run
