ATP 1000: Rome Empty ATP 1000: Rome

Post by noleisthebest Sun May 12, 2013 7:03 pm

They say that all roads lead to Rome.
Let's hope so, because the tour looks a bit lost in the space and time at the moment: with Nadal winning another Masters 1000 event playing the way he is, somebody's bound to notice and do something about it.
I can think of at least one player that looks forward to the opportunity Winking .

Last year's Rome brings memories of the re-rise of Andres Seppi and his heroic matches in Foro Italica, the glorious drama-packed wins over Isner and Wawrinka and the red-hot home atmosphere! I still have a vivid picture in my mind of a guy sitting on some wall dangling his legs with joy and excitement, obviously without a ticket, oh for the beautiful bygone era where there was no health and safety....

ATP 1000: Rome Seppi-img4094-300x198

ATP ROME 1000, clay

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia features the best players at the Foro Italico in Rome as one of the three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 contested on clay, but the event is more than just tennis - it is a total entertainment experience. High fashion, fine food, fabulous shopping and celebrity musical performances have made it one of the most glamorous stops on the ATP World Tour.

Players: Full house!

The Draw:
http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2013/416/mds.pdf

Order of Play:
http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2013/416/op.pdf

The draw this time has Nadal in Novak's half, and again for the third time in a row, in Ferrer's quarter. I suppose that was to be expected.
According to our statistician, Nadal needs to win the tournament in order to secure his 4th seeding in Roland Garros.

Personally, I don't think it makes any difference as Nadal keeps being drawn in Ferrer's quarter, his draw has been as good, if not much better than number One's during the entire clay season. Where there is a will....

Who is going to win Rome 2013?

That is pity that Rosol did not play with Nadal as a qualifier, which was quite often mentioned as a high probability. Rosol replaced Almagro due to his retirement. Having seen today final Rosol would stand a higher chance with his game to bother Nadal than Stan did today. Rosol plays in another half of the draw ATP 1000: Rome 1198964535

I must say that if that happen, Rosol would have a good chance to succeed with Nadal at Wimbledon if they meet in 1st or 2nd round. Rosol has played his best tennis recently and he seems to be a better player, especially in a tactical way. That is my wish for sure ATP 1000: Rome 478237397

Gulbis played well and looked very hungry against Nieminen today.

Local boy Starace beat Stepanek

Also through: Cilic, Ramos, Kuznetsov.

Fognini-Seppi locked in in the 1st round local thriller atm.

Very close match between Raonc and Kholi. Kholi won the first set in the TB. Serving for the match at 5:4, I'd better have a look before it ends Run

Great play from Kholi, and the W is his Applause

Hopefully Grigor and Fed are going to move to the next round and meet themselves. Their match is my one of really wishful matches. That will tell us really a lot not only about their current shapes, but about their futures. So, let's hope we can see them. My bet is on Grigor, but Fed is not going to lose it. Very tough match for both.

And before this day officially ends for me, I just wanted to mark the end of Rome 2013 for Andreas Seppi.

In a complete contrast to last year's inspired run that saw him win some brilliant matches as an underdog and knock out a few seeds on the way, all that in the couldron of fire that only Italian fans can create in Foro Italica, today, Seppi exited almost inaudiably, losing to his Davis Cup teammate Fognini in two easy sets. There was no atmosphere, no heroics, no fire.

A cruel, yet truthful picture of life and its law of bitter sweetness, or in Seppi's case today sweet bitterness Rose

Arrivederci Andreas, all'anno prossimo...

I have just realised that the two "baby Federers' - Gasquet and Dimotrov will be playing against each other today in order to earn the right to play Federer, the Daddy in the next round, how poetic!
Hopefully, Fed is not going to lose to Starace to disappoint them, especially after seeing how eager Starace seems to be these days (featuring in yesterday's hotshot) Winking

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nyTzS5zphzA

Another equally poetic development:

Rosol, who lost his qualifying match, is now a lucky loser (Tipsarevic withdrew from the tournament due to flu) and is on schedule to play Nadal in the 3rd round!

Dr Misha a set and a break up against Haas.
On paper, I should have loved to see this match, but for some reason, I don't like watching Haas, there is something cold an off-putting about him and the way he plays.
There's a bit of woman's reasoning for you Winking

Verdasco in the driving seat against Zeballos (3rd set)
Chardy trying to break Lopez and take the match to the 3rd.
Simon starting against Vollandri.

And what am I doing?
Waching a USO 2007 replay between Djokovic and Federer, resuffering again those 3 consecutive set points Novak managed to blow in the first set Wah

Well it's two very easy UEs from Fed that gave Djoko the break in that first set.

Pretty gusty conds and I agree with Fed now that this final was not of a great level. And I also agree with GP now that already back then Djoko was retriever. Hewitt won on those fast conds so winning on fast conds does not prove a player is agressive....unfortunately.

Federer takes teh ball earlier, has better timing and better hands....whihc you woudl expect after an extra 10 years of hitting the ball anyway. There is certainly some craftmanship learnt in those many extra years.

According to Borg, Nadal is the man to beat in RG:

"He's incredible - he's the best player that there has ever been on clay. On clay though, he's still the man to beat - and that will always be the case for as long as he is playing. We saw that at Monte Carlo and that's not going to change at Roland Garros, where it's best-of-five sets out on Centre Court. He's only ever lost there once, remember.
There's no-one better than him on this surface. People don't realise this - maybe the public has been spoilt to a certain extent. Rafa's quite simply an artist when it comes to clay.
I'm not surprised that Nadal has managed a comeback like this. If he didn't have the motivation, he wouldn't have bothered coming back. He still wants to win and I reckon that he can win a few more grand slams - fingers crossed, health and fitness permitting.
But he's a clever man and he's been on the circuit for long enough now to know what he can and can't do. I repeat, he's the man to beat in Paris, and I'm really looking forward to watching him there. You can still see his hunger for victory. He's still enjoying it and having fun."

No wonder Borg was never asked to be a tennis commentator. How many times did he get his pronostics wrong?

An artist? Of course it's all finess and effortless. I must pay more attention next time around. ATP 1000: Rome 2033450363

And "A clever man" of course. he follows the ball and chases it down wherever it goes. That's very clever indeed. He could run away from the ball if he wasn't that smart.

Italy has actually a few entertaining players: Foggy, Seppi, Starace, Bolleli, but they have no chance to do something big.

I wonder how Fed lost his match last week when he can play like today. Beautiful timing from both wings so far.

What i was thinking. Maybe he spent more than 2 hours on practice courts for this tournament ATP 1000: Rome 1071211947

I have good memories of this tournament. I had a pass partout in 2008 and spent 5 days in the wrong seat, without even knowing. I thought i had "Tribuna Monte Mario" ticket, but it was Distinti Monte Mario, which is above the Tribuna. Amazing it lasted 5 days before a guard told me i was in the wrong seat. ATP 1000: Rome 364988687.

Indeed. The talent is still there but it's lower down the ranking. They play a great match then they lose to Granollers out of exhaustion. Sometimes they can take a set of the top players ...but no cigar.

Those new strings...have been bad news for talented people.

And I think it was windy and may have less patience nowadays...especially if he experienced a few bad bounces (there were plenty in Madrid).

I love Italy but I have not been for a long time....Imagine...15 years ago I used to squeeze in WImby centre court without a ticket....those were the days ...Impossible to imagine that now.
