Just a thread for interesting and informative news you may want to share with the rest, too hot to ignore - too small for an article!

I'll kick it off with Toni Nadal's latest interview in which he claims that his nephew is NOT better than Federer and that ATP scheduling favours Federer, too.

http://www.tennisworldusa.org/Toni-Nadal-Roger-Federer-is-better-than-Rafael-Nadal-The-ATP-and-favorable-to-the-Swiss-articolo6328.html

Unbelievable, no?

Read it, Toni didn't say anything really shocking except exaggerating the speed of the courts Winking He said Fed is better than his nephew, not what you said (the other way around). The schedule might favor Fed, true, as it doesn't give enough time for cycling down periods, so will favor any non-doping player Winking but the courts do NOT, that was the only shocking bit, does Toni actually believe the HCs of the world today are fast?

OK, at-least it's not just me, you misquote basically everyone.

It's getting to frankly ridiculous levels now.

You're right! It must have been that hard workout I'm still recovering from! Tennis News 563610107
I was beginning to wonder about Toni's sanity....after doing all those freak experiments turning Nadal into a leftie, nothing would surprise me from him...

I don't remember what CP was saying exactly, there was a sea of people, or maybe the same one changing the name all the time on BBC 606, and "they" were all really funny, I loved all the nicknames they had for Fed: General Shanko, Bungler from Basel etc.
the name that stayed with me was Impartial Lion. I don't know whether that was CP or not.

No, CP was kind always CP I believe. He hated Federer but in funny way... He did not like Nadal either cause despite being Spanish he was in no illusion about his "strength". CP had been involved in high competition in his job and had some good knowledge about what was happening behind the curtain.

Ion Tiriac, the blue clay Mastermind has just bought another tournament: the ATP 250 even in Dusseldorf, the week before Roland Garros.

He is partnering it with the newly retired German Rainer Schuttler, and the tournament will be a regular 250 ATP one.
Previously it was the not so popular and well-known "World Team Cup" even, won by Serbia this year, I think.

There you go: I can just begin to imagine what kind of crazy ideas Ion is going to be cooking in his head over the longer than ever off-season break Tennis News 2474333020

Autobiography? You really do twist things as you like don't you?

It's a biography, NITB, it's a biography. (Not an autobiography). Really he doesn't have much control over it, and I'm sure you can find many many biographies of Murray if you tried.

I liked this point though:
"All kids should be treated somewhat differently depending on what you
feel would be best for them. I don’t feel I would’ve succeeded had I
been sent away from home at 12 years of age and made to live down in
Florida. I would’ve quit. My academy believes in something different
where that, god forbid, you could be a well-rounded person and, god
forbid, maybe play other sports as a kid for a while and maybe go to
college and that might actually help you as opposed to hurting you.”

Yes but as he says he simply woudl not have been successful in the current era. He was extremely talented but nowadays it would have been completely useless, especially with his technique. SO either you do like Bolitieri and rely on "special diets" or you are a one century genius who also needs to work very hard with perfect technique. I'd be curious to see who comes out of his academy.

I just believe the next great champion will have his own way of doing things and not come from an academy...

I'm not sure he would not have been successful in this era, he'd have to be a lot fitter, though.
As for "dieats" I'm not sure what you mean: doping in general of gluten-free diet Novak's on.
Finally, about the new champion....it's going to be very hard, but it will have to be a prodigy to start with. They always find their way whether in an academy or not.
Although there are academies and academies....A good and intelligent coach (are there any in those academies?) should be able to pick a prodigy and not try to mould it into DBH and patterns....and they don't come every day...the way children are growing up these days, there will be fewer and fewer anyway, countries that have produced best tennis players are killing their children with the way they are bringing them up.

I am more sure that players like Petzchner or Llodra would have been big names in the 80s than McEnroe being a big name in this era.

Look, as soon as the players became a bit fitter and more powerful, McEnroe went from winning 2 slams in 84 to nothing for the rest of his life.

I am a big fan of McEnroe's talent but I can easily see the limitations in the personality of the player.

Being successful in one era doesn;t mean being successful in all eras. Timing is essential. Woudl have Bill Gates been that successful had he been born in the 30s before computers existed? Maybe but most likely not to the extend he has been.

Tsonga hires a new coach:

"Tsonga has hired Australian Roger Rasheed as his new coach, L’Equipe reports.

Tsonga has been without a coach for about a year and a half, while
Rasheed stopped coaching Tsonga’s countryman Gael Monfils in July of
2011 after three years together. Tsonga, currently ranked No. 7, had
been the only member of the Top 10 without a coach. Tsonga’s last coach

Interesting insight from Tsonga's new coach:

"Roger Rashee says that most of the players behind the Top 4 of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray have all but given up on believing they can beat them.

The culture that I see at the moment on the tour, with players who are not that bad, is playing to finish second, behind the guys in the top four. I don't like that mentality and Jo is not like that. He shows it clearly."

Nice to know:

"Pierre Paganini, the longtime fitness trainer of Roger Federer, tells the New York Times that the 31-year-old has not lost any speed.

“I’m convinced that he has not lost a step,” Paganini said.“You also can’t forget that Roger has a quality of anticipation that isenormous. In tennis, you don’t only need to be fast. You need to run cleanly and use speed intelligently, and Roger is very intelligent in this department. It’s court vision, anticipation, maturity.”

Paginini added that the reason why Federer has never suffered a major injury is because he knows recovery is an important part of the process.

“So for him it’s natural to recover after a series of tournaments and then he’s even more motivated to start training again,” he said. “What Ifind interesting is that he is just as motivated now as he was as a junior. I’d say even more so for the physical training. When he was young, he was an artist who wanted to be an artist. Now he’s an artist who knows exactly what he needs to do to express his virtuosity.”

Yes interesting. He has lost some explosiveness but that may be tactical.

My brother was telling me about an interview in l'equipe where Federer actually says the opposite of Paganini in that Fed wants to cut on training physycally as he is bored with it and wants to do a kind of McEnroe training which consisted roughly of hitting the ball a couple hours a day.

I was surprised to hear that ....will have to look for the interview.

I posted a thread on this quote by Rasheed on another site. It is interesting he calls the players outside the top 4 soft for not having the right attitude and he excludes Tsonga. Tsonga is probably the guy who fits the criticim of not doing the right things to win in terms of his weight or going without a coach for almost two years. So apparently, the guys outside the top 4 don't have the right attitude and have concede to the top 4 but not Tsonga who is paying him each month. Tsonga according to him doesn't have that attitude of concession.

World Tour Finals to remain in London through 2015
The ATP says its season-ending finals will stay in London for an extra two years to 2015.The ATP Tour finale for the top eight players is in the fourth year of a five-year deal to play at the O2 Arena in the British capital.

ATP President Brad Drewett says "the excitement created by our season-ending tournament in London has been fantastic, with fans, players, media, and commercial partners all supporting the event in an unprecedented manner."

The ATP finals came to London in 2009 after four years in Shanghai. Previously, the tournament was staged in cities including Houston,Frankfurt and New York.

Not the sort of news some here would like to hear, however, moi on the other hand... Tennis News 4006036031 :

"World No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic discusses countryman and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the ATP World Tour Finals.

“Last year was something special,” Tipsarevic told reporters when asked
about his close friend Djokovic. “I’m not going to say it’s never going
to happen because this sport is full of surprises. But, to be honest
with you, I was expecting him to stay No. 1, because just talking to
this guy -- this is maybe a little bit too personal -- but in my opinion
on his mind is only one thing: To be the best and No. 1 in the world
forever and ever and ever. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays the
No. 1 all throughout next year and win whatever goal he has in his mind,
like more Grand Slams, French Open, all four.”

Robin Soderling has been out of competition since July 2011.
He has become a father in the meantime, but still struggling with mono both physically and mentally.

He wants to come back but finds it hard and says he'll give it his best shot next year.
It is also quite possible that he may never return.
Very sad for the big Sod.
Swede recently said: "I haven't made a definitive decision yet. I’ll
try to come back in 2013, but I don't know if I can. I will try my
best.

Soderling also spoke about his mono: "Now I can train more, but
sometimes it's tough. I feel frustrated and powerlessness, it’s really
annoying. I talked to a sport psychologist and I learned to accept this
situation with the passing of time, even if it is rough.”

Old news really, but I just saw this

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1424367-novak-djokovic-goes-topless-for-wonderful-massage-provided-by-brazilian-model

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GAYfQUluUY

"Novak Djokovic will be at center court getting a rubdown from some hotties if you need him.
This here video, spotted by The Big Lead, is pretty much the only reason to lace up the tennis shoes and work on your backhand until you are a world-renowned star.
It's not just good to be the Djoker, it's fan-freaking-tastic.
According to the report, this moment of hilarious relaxation came during an exhibition match against Gustavo Kuerten in Brazil about a week ago.
Four Brazilian beauties—the report refers to them as either models or just beautiful ball girls—came over and give Djokovic a massage.
Never one to do anything simply, the Serbian, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, takes off his shirt to hollers from the crowd.
He is just slipping into something a little more comfortable, ladies.
The
four lovelies continue to give him a massage before he decides to take a
little nap. Once the whole joke has dissolved into mere chuckles he
gets a group hug.
After the hug you can see some young men looking at Djokovic with the same reverence that I do from across the world in my office.
I am extremely jealous of this man who slays opponents on the court and gets epic massages in between matches.
You should be too."

Frivolous time calls for frivolous indulgence. Tennis News 83870220

Tennis News 2033450363 Djoko is such a clown. He makes me laugh. What would Fed, Nadal and Murray have done in the same situation with the adoring models?

It takes a lot of humility and courage to be a clown, deep down it's the need to please others. Easy to be "classy" and gentlemanly....doesn't cost you anything!

So a big Tennis News 4052418255 for Nole...and may enjoy "singledom" as much as he can, life is for living Tennis News 83870220

Oh..

Who is your top favourite for AO?

As We saw from another thread, there hasn't been any single player who has dominated the field. Its all shared between players and no single stand out performer. So there is actually no favourite in my opinion. Its all open to form of the day and luck.

Bernard Tomic has been axed from Aus' Davis cup team. His commitment and behaviour is questioned

Surprising? Not to me. He looked that kind.

That was weird watching Fed and Bellucci just now.
You could see it was not quite a regular match (Fed lost), but wasn't "fun"enough to be an exo, either.
Still, beggars can't be choosers Tennis News 364988687

Was this match in Brazil where Bellucci is the local boy? Not surprising he lost then. He'll beat Tsonga at least once but both times I'm not sure. He'll also most likely beat Haas as he lost to him in Halle so he'll seek revenge. Versus Del Po there are two matches and Del Po is the local boy in Argentina so Fed will have to lose one, I don't see him lose both tho, so I'd say 1-1, almost surely (unless Del Po is on a tear).
