Murray v Berankis

Post by Tenez on Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:18 pm

I am really looking forward to that one. Berankis was really impressive yesterday v F Mayer. It may well be the angle of the camera from the side courts contributing to the quality of Ricardas's shots but hardly ever did I see a player take the ball that early and hit it flat and powerfull. He is very short and doesn't look too gracious and stylish but so efficient it was really impressive. The straight sets easy score doesn't actually quite reflect how easier it coudl have been even for the youngster.

Murray will have the huge advantage of having played on big stages before. I believe Berankis has little exposure of huge crowds and big arenas. However I think he really has the tools to expose Murray's defensive and I woudl not be surprised if Berankis was going to create the upset. I am not sure where Berankis had been over the last 2 years but then he was by far the most promising junior.

2013 could be his and confirm his potential.

I think it will be consistency Ten. Playing Mayer and Murray are so different. One doesn't have the endless energy or defence to return heavy groundstrokes. Some would argue look at JJ and Paris. Granted, but Paris is a pudding of a court and given the conditions at the moment I think the courts are playing faster than last year.

I would like to share your optimism and yes I would agree Murray is the more vulnerable of the top 3 to an upset, but with how Murray has played I can't see an upset on the cards. Especially over a BO5.

Re: Murray v Berankis

Yes but it's a question of match ups. I am not sure Murray's game can force the UEs as much. The pushed FH and BH slice will not get him far so he will have to do well. Despite winning his first set v Haase convincingly, Haase created more BPs than Murray and Berankis has quicker hands than JJ and Haase combined.

I am not saying Berankis will win but I certainly expect a very tough match for Murray.

Berankis created 13 BPs versus Stackovski and 10 v Mayer. Hs not lost a set yet.

Did yuo watch the Berankis Mayer match?

I haven't catched much of the matches TBH this week.

You are asking a lot though Tenbo. It is ok creating the BP's, but you have to take them. What is Berankis's BP conversion compared with Murray's? The last time Murray went out in the 3rd round of a Slam? I don't think Berankis has the game to really take out Murray in a BO5.

I think we are looking for a Soderling/Rosol heorics. Murray mentally and physically is looking at his peak (not in the way I would like I might add)

Good luck to him if he can. We have had this when players haven't ha the scarring, though he will be nervous when he walks out on court.

Re: Murray v Berankis

Well Soderling and Rosol are very different players in the sense than one is a very low ranked player while the other prooved himself on the bigger stage a few times.

However I think Berankis is yet another type. He is the former Junior world number 1....so clearly in terms of talent and potential he has what Soderling and Rosol never had. And what's more amazing is that he had that without having an outstanding frame and physique.

Not all former Junior world number 1 succeed in the real world but nearly , if not all, successful players have been great junior champions.

True, true. He has made it through the first 2 rounds and unfortunately for juniors in this day and age it will take longer given the high physical demands of the game nowadays.

The thought that crossed my mind when I saw Berankis play yesterday was how natural and comfortable he was in every part of the court, how fluid & light in movement and excellent in ball-striking esp COMPARED TO FERRER, who is probably even a bit taller.
Tomorrow's match should be very interesting as Berankis appears very confident, as well.

Murray and Berankis in some way are complete opposites.
Personally, I'd love tennis and ATP to go Berankis' way.

In terms of a match-up, it's hard to predict; Berankis' serve is excellent for his size, to me it's just how he'll be able to handle some of Murray's pace/bashing.
Berankis is light-footed and in that way reminded me of Davydenko and Dolgopolov, but his game is a lot more compact and straightforward than theirs.
Also Berankis plays very fast, so long as he doesn't engage in endless pushing rallies with Murray it should be very good!

Berankis looks very cocky and confident, I don't think he'll either choke or have trouble converting BPs. My only concern is how long he can last in hot weather, esp as poor guy had to play through qualifications.

It shouldn't be.
Stilll, it's so hard to imagine how they will play each other, esp how Berankis solves the "pushing enigma"

Their match will show if Murray is able to change his attitude, i.e. if he can take over dominant role on the court. I saw some balls from his match and he looked that a certain change could be there.

It would be foolish to think that Beran could do it. Otherwise BeranĀ“s serve statistics with Mayer look amazing in regard to his height. Mayer reminds me a player who plays rather badminton instead of tennis.

I thought Mayer was actually a hard hitter and in fact had Murray in trouble at teh FO a couple of years ago....until Mayer got out of steam. Versus Mayer, it was Murray doing the scrapping so I can only imagine v Berankis.

I hope everyone is properly prepared and excited about this match. I have had my catch-up sleep and am coming round with some strong coffee.
Great to have two young players play on Laver against top 3 players, one of them being the local hero,
Both talented and eager to prove themselves.
Of the two, I'd say Berankis will show no nerves at all, Tomic is all facade and will choke.
And if all this proves to be wrong, I'll blame it on not having had enough sleep

Still nearly 6 hours to go , (hopefully some other decent matches before.)

YOu might be right but I woudl have said the other way around. Berankis has teh talent to do it and knows he can do it so will more likely choke, especially as he has no experience of the big court, big crowd. Tomic knows that tactics is everything and will use and abuse them to make a name of himself.

Still nearly 6 hours to go , (hopefully some other decent matches before.)
That's courageous!

After 8 minutes, 4 deuces and a 29 shot rally Murray equalises to 1 all.
Berry moves to 2;1 after a very quick service game. He serves impressively for his height. All his misses are very small.

What a truly gorgeous point at the net for Berry! 3:2. Murray smashes his racquet. Foul-mouthing. Ugly.
I think he is realising he's got his work cut out here and Berry's not going to roll out for him.

Berry 9/10 at the net, great feel. He is playing absolutely brilliantly at the moment.

Berry cracks a forehand return winner and breaks!!!!! 4:2

Nooooo. Berry definitely spent. Still manages a first class smash from the base-line
And after several Nadal-style scrappers, manges to convert 4th BP. Murray's box at their fist-pumping worst

Just had a look and saw it was 7:5 in the third.
I am so sad he lost that match, it was absolutely criminal of Murray to have won it.
Berankis played so well in the second, inexperience was the word that crossed my mind more than once.
the only good thing was that Murray's tennis looked more junk than ever, I don't think he has done anything on it during the off-season, if not he looked worse than last year.

He did look he could run a marathon, though.
