Robin Soderling...the End? Empty Robin Soderling...the End?

Robin Soderling says that he doesn’t know if he will ever play professionally again. He has been battling mononucleosis since the summer of 2011.

“The hope, the hopelessness, then the hope again, then the hopelessness
- that really kills me,” Soderling said. “I feel really good, then I
start to practise, and then I think maybe in a couple of months I can
come back and I really believe it. Then I do a bit too much and wake up
one morning not feeling well again.”

One medical test on Soderling revealed that his thyroid wasn’t
functioning properly, leading to extreme fatigue. The Swede said he
began to feel very sick in last summer, and may have overexerted
himself.

“Wimbledon was not good at all,” said Soderling, who was upset by
Bernard Tomic there last year. “I was vomiting in the morning and I had a
fever. I don’t know why I played. But then it’s Wimbledon and you want
to play, and that’s what you’ve done your whole life. You’ve pushed away
your feelings of tiredness and tried harder
.”

Soderling added that three weeks later, after winning the title in
Bastad for the first time, he “got really, really sick.” His longtime
partner, Jenni Mostrom, recently gave birth to their daughter, Olivia.

“I don’t want my career to be finished yet,” he said. “I feel I have at least five more years in me.” Robin Soderling...the End? 4052418255

I hope that whether he returns to tennis or not, Soderling finds peace within himself and that God grants him full recovery and a long and healthy life.

For old time's sake.....

Just seeing this clip got me all excited about the next season, and some more of those brilliant battles on clay.

I doubt Soderling will ever be able to play at even near his top level or play at all. We saw how much effort Mario Ancic put in and tried to make his comeback but he just couldn't. How many years can an athlete live in hope of being able to play again? The situation often gets the better of him and he just has to accept it.

The main thing is the tour moves on and if you don't evolve with it, it's really tough to comeback....especially after such long periods. This is why I am a bit sceptical about Rafa's form next year....though for him it's slightly different as he doesn't need to retrieve an edge, his tennis is not about edge, it's about fitness...in that respect he might do better than I expect...but still 6 months is a long time off.
