Re: Roland Garros - 2019
So Thiem splits the first two sets with Rafa. That is better than anyone else could do. Do we have a match?
Odd match so far. Thiem looked very very good early on, I would say better than Rafa for most of the first set, yet he lost it relatively easily in the end. He looked quite poor most of this set, yet he is now at one set all.
Also, that was a very poor game from Rafa. Thiem did not have to do much more than just hang in there, avoid unforced errors, and Rafa kind of imploded. Quite unusual sight.

Why are we allowing Nadal to take so much time?

Oh no not like this. This is another one of the lapses like he also had in SF. It cost him in the first set. Given how dominant Rafa has been on serve of late, this is brutal.

Simon Reed, who has been a Nadal sycophant for years, is solidly fed up with his time wasting now.

Horrible start to the set. But I suppose it is still better to chuck in a stinker of a service game at 0:0 in the third than at 5:5 in the second.

Yeah but he's doing it twice just to make sure.

Wondering if the umpire is actually aware of the shot clock. Petchey stating he saw the clock tick down and ignored it virtually.
I am hoping this like VAR in football will start weeding out emotionally weak officials if they are not going to enforce rules.

You don't know what a good volley is. Nadal is not a good volleyer.
That's why even on slow grass he gets trounced.

Rafa's no Roger when it comes to volleying, but he ain't that bad at all. Mind you, he doesn't volley he just puts the ball away when he has to.Daniel2 wrote:DEC1M7 wrote:Nadals volleying in this match, wow

Still, much better than in the early days when it was all about baseline moonballing. I find him watchable these days.

He's part of generation worthless so what do you expect? Doesn't help that the schedule and draw have favoured doper totally again. - and the officials are letting doper cheat with time too.

Thiem's spent.
Plus moonballing his FH.
Another RG to forget. This one is the worst I can remember.

Well, we have to remember again that the schedule and draw have totally favoured Nadal... AGAIN.
But yeah - it's sad to see that there is no decent clay courter around to challenge Nadal. Djok isn't a clay courter. NAdal has no competition at all on this shit surface.
Thiem has it all to do now.

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
It will be hard now. Even without off games from Thiem, Nadal has been distinctly the better player the last two sets. In a way, Thiem is lucky this is not over yet. I still do not quite understand why Rafa got broken in the second set.

I read somewhere that Nadal played two days last week, Thiem 4. That says everything.Daniel2 wrote:AceofDeath wrote:Imagine being in your prime on your best surface and then being smacked around by an old, balding, brat

Santoro commentating the match in France says that Nadal only had legs and a Whipping FH when arrived in 2005 but no volley and a weak BH.... But he has constantly improved with a BH better than ever...AceofDeath wrote:Imagine being in your prime on your best surface and then being smacked around by an old, balding, brat

He's not better than ever. We know that because we can see cracks appearing in his clay domination. This year he's not had it all his own way.

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
It's like the tournament organisers have adopted Nadal as their own. Truly ridiculous to play today after the weather affected Thiem, not Nadal.noleisthebest wrote:I read somewhere that Nadal played two days last week, Thiem 4. Nadal at RG. A relatively easy 4-setter (though obviously hopefully not today - Thiem will win in five ) is about as tight as his matches usually get. Sad but true.luvsports! wrote:A closer final than in previous years.

Re: Roland Garros - 2019
Problem is that Djoko is the only player who can make Nadal run. This is exactly why I wanted Djoko to win yesterday. Like all shbh you are at a big disadvantage on clay. Fed without wind is the only shbh player who could have beaten Nadal but the conds were atrocious for a player being able to play with such thin margins.
Djoko with his fitness and DHBH was our best bet.
Beating Nadal on clay is hard work but when the draw and the conds are on his side it's impossible.
