Better for Federer to be away from Djokovic, and glad to see Zverev have a chance to take him out before the final.
We’ll see, but a more balanced look than the last few Slams.

Federer rather than Zverev. It had to be one or the other.
Federer who is now way past his prime and been struggling. I doubt he will even reach the SF.
And he's avoided last big Winner (Zverev) and other big hitters. It's not an opinion - Nadal has the easier draw. It isn't just about Zverev - it's his entire run.

Re: Australian Open - 2019
lol Daniel, Federer played Zverev a few days ago in the Hopman Cup and trashed him 6-4 6-2. Zverev is also an injury doubt to even enter. And lastly, if anyone is unlikely to reach the semi finals of a Slam, it's Zverev who has a terrible Grand Slam Record.
As for Anderson in the quarter finals... can you think of the last time Anderson pulled off a big upset in the QF of a Slam? I can.
I'll admit the earlier rounds Nadal has relative easier opponents, apart from De Minaur who has shown great potential. Btw in Round 4 he could also face Schwartzmann, who has always played great against Nadal on any surface.

On a more sombre note, sad news for Murray, who is retiring potentially after the Aus Open.

Yeah, damn just woke up to read the news
The start of the end of an era now, sad to see him quit but well done for all the results he had in a period of other 3 playing too.
Enjoy life and family now, do engage on BBC at W, he was pretty good last year

Re: Australian Open - 2019
Saw the Murray press conference. Was tough watching seeing a guy realise he can't play the sport he dearly loves so much. The fact he is already talking a second op to give him that better quality of life really does hammer home how severe it really is despite the positive noises coming from his press comments. Sometimes it's really easy to take for granted the injuries any athlete suffers and assume they can bounce back from anything.
Having endured during the fabled Henman years, I had almost written off any hope of seeing a Brit win Wimbeldon in my lifetime. Having seen wildcard after wildcard wasted on the likes of Bogdanovic, it really was a bad place for British tennis. Seeing Andy make his DC debut and feeling this guy could be the real deal and he certainly proved that in the coming years.
He might not be everyone's cup of tea. Regardless how you feel about his style of play, no-one ever wants to see someone walk away from something they love with a whimper. I wish Andy nothing by happiness in life and health for the future. I hope the LTA get a clue, call him and get his expertise in how to develop young players and turn them into genuine prospects.

Re: Australian Open - 2019
Very tough but unfortunately it was a Faustian pact to win at Slam level and to be fair it's one he got paid off on. What he put himself through to reach the level of physicality was immense; part of me wanted him to focus on the type of quirky game that troubled Federer so much early on that he ran off to a 6-2 h2h lead (I think) but it probably wouldn't have led to Slams, more so considering how much the game tilted towards physical endurance.
3 Slams, and especially 2 Wimbledons, is a gigantic career return and I think the smart thing now would be to take the ops needed to get quality of life and chuck it in fast before he degrades things even further.

Re: Australian Open - 2019
Definitely BB. His quirky game in those early years was quite enjoyable to watch purely because he had to think around his opponents. As you say didn't have the levels of physicality to push that game to greater success which he did but now paying the ultimate price. Cracking term with the Fasutian reference.
As you say, look back, enjoy the memories and absolutely get the quality of life.

Re: Australian Open - 2019
Bogbrush - agree with that. It's been an absolutely immense career in an era of three OTT all-time-greats. It's not just the huge heights of 3 slams and the #1, it's the consistency of being losing finalist at 8 slams when it was only Federer or Djokovic left to beat him not to mention 10 slam semis when he was only ever beaten by a former slam winner (Fed/Nadal/Djoko/Roddick/Wawrinka).
Also, from the British point of view he's been an important figure because his character, his background, and his attitude has not been what we'd usually expect in a British sportsman, particularly a tennis player. He's battled through real and unfair unpopularity to make people accept him on his own terms, and the British sports watching public are the better for it.

Re: Australian Open - 2019
Yes, agreed. Sad but frankly if he had to choose between retiring now with a great record or being number 25 all his life (which I think he would have been without that extraordinary fitness , I am sure he would go for the former results.
Game wise, I won't miss him. A B version of Djoko's game and a C version of what lay ahead with guys like Zverev.

He's a defensive bore and has an awful on court attitude. Plus silver spoon hero. Good riddance. I hope Caledonia Craig chokes on the news.

For all the question’s worth, who’s gonna win AO?
What are the chances of a Nole-Fed final?

They are quite possibly higher than chances of any other final. I would guess around 20%.noleisthebest wrote:What are the chances of a Nole-Fed final?

Dan Evans is a much tougher opponent than the flop Nadal got. Easy draw as usual.

Now's the time to tell me how wrong I was. Accept it: You're wrong. You're making excuses.
