Thank god. No Nadal in the final so I can enjoy it.
Hoping Anderson to win it but if he doesn't it's fine.

Hasn't got a prayer I dont think given the 100 game marathon. But he has more chance than against nadal who would just retrieve every ball and pepper backhand.

Nadal and his fans dreaming of beating roger's record... it's the whole world to them. Nadal thinking "I'll have that numpty in the final again and another slam i've cruised through virtually unopposed"

Just watched again.
Nadal grimacing during final serve after fall - and going down tunnel grimmaced because a camera was on him.
HE'S ALREADY AT IT. Already got his excuse lined up.
You watch.... he's injured... only to come back betterer than evererer.

Sheesh. They both know that Djokovic is back now. That is not likely to help Nadal’s slam tally. Shame that....

Great from both. Nadal was unlucky it was an indoor match, but that is sport. Nole deserved it. A semi to remember.
Me, a little sad for Rafa.

Already at it - blaming the roof. Like clockwork. You've even got Nada's speaking out of both sides of the mouth to a tee.

Re: Men's semi final
That was ridiculously good from Nadal though, could see more dimensions to his game e.g. slice, drop shot. That forehand down the line was firing and he was attacking earlier than Djokovic most of the time. So many times Djokovic just gave the ball to Nadal's forehand without going for anything. Incredible nerve to keep up intensity after failing to break at 7-7 in the fifth.

I Think Nadal played a great tournament, and he had just won roland garros. Now we know Nole is back, usopen will be huge. For tomorow, whoever wins it will be a nice story.

Good question.
I was surprised to see how many aces he had compared to Nadal.
I suppose the serve was crucial as he kept holding comfortably during the 5th set.
I can't remember last time he was that clutch.
And I def did not expect it today.
But he somehow managed to do it.
If anything, I think it was the fact Nadal played differently than before that made the difference.
For once he was the aggressor...and that must have drained him in the end as he looked breakable and beatable in the 5th.

Re: Men's semi final
And a few final thoughts on the match...
firstly, it was a great one. I never thought I'd say it, but superb tennis from Nadal. Today his sheer grit and quality of focus and precision, variety and quality of craft and shots certainly was a nice surprise.
I am glad there was no gamesmanship or any dodgy calls.
Coming to this match I was as rusty as Nole in the support for him.
But GP was right in predicting a match vs Nadal could raise the dead nitb from the grave.
And it is thanks to GP I am writing this at all.
So if you get sick and tired of me blame him.
What to say of old Nole...so much water under the bridge...so many tough losses in the last 18 months....on all fronts!...poor Nole!
Well, he managed to plug all the holes.
I admire how bravely and calmly he played this match.
With a lighter racquet, his shots lost quite a bit of weight and pace, he looked lightweight compared to Nadal like never before.
Now and then he would pull the trigger. That looked good.
Of course I would've liked him to have done it more often...but the confidence doesn't come on tap...you've got to earn it.
So I think he will have recovered a good chunk of it with this win. I don't think he could have played any better under the circumstances.
So, bravo and welcome back among the living, Nole!

He has served his purpose, and we have nothing to be grateful because he didn’t do it for us. He did it for himself.Tenez wrote:You ungracious peuple. Imagine had nadal won another Wimbledon with only 2 slams behind Federer.
Our satisfaction is a by product, entirely incidental to his personal ambitions, and if it has benefitted him to impose the opposite feelings on us, he would. If fact he often has.
Therefore talk of gratitude is ridiculous.

I was returning from vacation when the pilot announced mid-flight that Nole won. That was nice - saved me from unnecessary stress.
Tomorrow I am happy with whoever wins. I will be rooting for Kev, but if Nole wins I will not begrudge him the victory - his today's victory saved us Fed fans from a big headache.

Re: Men's semi final
So, this Wimbledon is a wash - no gain or loss in the Fed vs Rafa chase. Given that Fed was the favorite, it is a little disappointing but overall, the longer we go without Rafa closing the gap, the smaller the chance he will ever catch up.
If Fed finishes the year three ahead, I will view it as success - Rafa will be no closer than when the year started, and will have one less year to close the gap.
The USO will be - similar to this Wimbledon - very important. The difference is that the pressure is shifting on Rafa.

Re: Men's semi final
He has two titles and three more final appearances here - so obviously can do well. But at the same time, he had failed to reach QF in five attempts prior to this year. None of the other Big 4 members have had a barren patch anywhere near as bad at any of the slams.Emancipator wrote:Didn't some people ridicule the idea that Rafa would ever challenge on grass?
Looks like a solid contender at every slam.

Decima:
It was not grass tennis. It was easy put away finishes at net - and cross court only. Nothing there to write home about. And thanks to baking heat and already dumbed down grass season - it was virtually dirt for him.
And he still lost.

Well Steven Gerrard isn't alone in a slip costing him a title
Glad in some way to see Djokovic nearly back to his best. There still seems to be some complacency now and then in his game and that might well be a vulnerability to his game for the remainder of his career.
Nadal has had a decent tournament given how he hasn't been at the races for a while.

Re: Men's semi final
I remember you once criticised Tenez for being narrow minded in that he would be negative about Nadal regardless of the reality, and you said despite hating Nadal you were not so partisan.Daniel wrote:Decima:

Perhaps you are falling into that trap? If you don't think having 73 out of the 191 points he won as winners, and having 37/50 net points for a baseliner with a poor serve like Nadal is a positive performance against the best defender in the world, then you may as well just criticise Nadal whatever he does. It's so easy to be hyper-partisan.

Amri,
I did not see the match so cannot say if Rafa played well or not. But I know that just the fact he lost makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. So I am happy to enjoy that, and you can enjoy the way he played. I would be ok with the same scenario in future slams.

SBH is the heart of tennis.
Taking the ball early is the pinnacle of tennis talent.
Those are the basics.
Tennis is a lot more than just winning or losing...it can also be art. But then again, not all have the need for fine thing of life...fair enough, but I wouldn’t swap.

Yes still razor thin edge to Federer I would say. However Nadal looks amazingly fit and feisty and better than he has since 2013. Certainly possible that he could be competing for all four slams for another 2 years. If Fed wins the USO I think he's home and dry. If Rafa does, then he becomes the favourite (at least to tie). Unfortunately for Rafa the return of Djokovic couldn't have happened at a more inopportune time.
