Great win for Mexico. Germans didn't have their day, tried but just not to be today.

Sad

Not happy about Germany. Hopefully they advance but they could have a very tough Rd16 if they do not win their group.

Well you are French, you are supposed to be glad smiley

Not sure why I root for Germany.  I am not German, but somehow when I was a kid I started rooting for them and it just stuck.  So much so that if they make the final, I will be watching soccer rather than Wimbledon final - even if the latter featured Fed vs Rafa for the ultimate GOAThood.

My rooting for Germany is a soccer specific thing though - does not extend to other sports.  I was always rooting against Becker when I was a kid, for example.  In fact, in retrospect I suspect it was at least partly because he was German.

I haven’t watched football for ages...it’s changed a lot.

And it’s a bit weird to switch back to that world, because it’s sooooo different from tennis!

When you watch a tennis match you see superb skill every minute or so...with football, you’re lucky if you get 2-3 decent moves...let alone goals.

I also noticed there is a lot of dirty play/tackling now, use of hands and arms is almost a norm...no stone’s kind of left unturned...

Though, the really skilled players are skilled more than in the past, you can see they work    harder  than 20+years ago.

I won’t comment on tattoos and hairstyles

That was probably worse at the time South American players (Brazil in particular) were head and shoulder above Europeans and those latter were constantly hurting the more talented ones as they coudl not get hold of the ball.

Why? Football is so boring compared to tennis, out of the 90 minutes there's probably only 7 minutes of exciting sport. Remaining 83 minutes ball is just in the middle of the park going nowhere.

Yes, now Europeans have caught up “physically”, it was almost sad to watch Switzerland draw vs Brasil yesterday...outmuscle, bully, pull their shirts, armlock around the neck etc...

In a way similar to tennis, it’s tough for talent to shine.

Tjier draw is perfect for Serbia though, as we are the top of the group atm! Big Grin

The standard of refereeing in this tournament has been beyond poor. This lot I wouldn't trust doing an under 5's game let alone a World Cup match.

No clue how to use VAR.

That Tunisian number 13 should’ve been sent off.

I wouldn’t say boring, just different, completely different.

There is something exciting about a well composed body of eleven players all striving for the same thing: the imperfect passes, the misses, the agony of helplesness when you lose, because it was a team loss and the ecstasy of winning if you eg score a big goal.

Its philosophy looks at a different angle of human effort in sport...although all sports boil down the same on paper.

Anyway, I am enjoying both tennis and football atm...bring it ooon! diva

I also hardly ever watch football these days - essentially once every four years.  But my impression (though could be wrong, old memories are fading) is that football was dirtier 30-40 years ago than it is now.  I seem to remember it used to be non-stop fouls, injury faking, etc etc.  There is still fair amount of that, but if anything I would say less than back then.

It's been a farce all tournament. Brazil were kicked out of the game. The penalties awarded and not awarded have been shocking.

Referees look clueless. VAR looks clueless.

Completely pathetic standards for such a grand event.

The reffing has been dire.

Australia/France - Never a penalty. Ball was won first, so irrelevance of follow through contact.

Switzerland/Brazil - Blatant push on the Swiss goal. How it took the ref 70 minutes to book Behrami for kicking lumps out of Neymar.

Argentina/Iceland - Gave a penalty when it wasn't and then didn't give one when it was.

Sweden/South Korea - How long did it take for them to review.

A refereeing shitshow!

Went 2 goals go down and just went into meltdown and started kicking lumps out of Croatia. Otimendi's conduct was disgraceful kicking a player when down.

If i put all options in line (Ronaldo, Ramos, Griezman or Neymar jumping up and down with the cup???) i must say -for crying out loud- let the Germans win it.
Yes, this is coming from a Dutchman.... Blush
But if they win it will be painless, they won't bother anyone because they expect nothing less. Winning is: ein ganz klare sache. They won't rub it in when i'm there. Then the Belgiums...please no! The Dutch won't have a life left if they win. They will mock us forever!

Du sprichst Deutsch?

Maybe Serbs will beat Brazlians (one can dream... ) so you won't have to look at them jump...Brazil looked quite average vs Albania (pardon, Switzerland)

Btw, what is going on with Duch football?

Dutch football is known for the youth academies but nowadays we reap but never sow. Our talents are sold before they turn 19 and then drown and fail in one of the foreign big leagues. They all fall for the money and the sweet talk of their agents.
Even supertalents like Bergkamp or Sneijder played at least 5 seasons for Ajax before they moved. Being a talent alone is not enough, they have to mature in the right environment.
And secondly: after finishing third at the WC of 2014 with Louis van Gaal, we're had consecutively three weak coaches. Hopefully the current coach Koeman will restore some order.

Yes...the pressures are too big outside the "nest" these days.

In England where they have the best league, local talent is kept on benches for the big stars from the rest of the world...which is why national team is dead. They even had to hire foreign "national" managers....

Serbia's been like that for quite some time, too. It's all about money now. Sad

Germans seem to have resisted the sell-out trend.

What's the big deal with Belgians and Dutch?
Is it historical?
The Belgiums look at us like most Dutch look at the Germans: big mouths treading us like a little brother. I guess deep down it's the frustration of the neigbor being a little bit better in most things.

Have to say though, i love being in Belgium, i like 'm a lot. But i will wait going there for a while if they win the WC Whistle

That’s how the Swiss feel about them, too.

It all sounds pretty civilised between you and Belgians...compared to the Balkans!

I like to feel the citizen of the Earth, bit it’s not that easy at tmes....
