The Djokovic Murray Rivalry
An absolutely brilliant article on Djokovic Murray rivalry written by S. Tignor of tennis.com.
He breaks the rivalry down to:
"When Nadal plays Federer, it has always been Rafa who has been able to
stay in his comfort zone and keep his tactics simple—essentially, he
knows he can win by putting his strength, his forehand, against
Federer’s weakness, his backhand. But the tables were turned on Nadal
when he faced Djokovic in 2011. In those matches, it was Djokovic, with
his airtight strokes from both sides, who could sit back and rally,
while Nadal had to be more aggressive than normal. At the start of this season, it seemed that Murray would also need to be more aggressive to beat Djokovic"
"Nobody would mistake Djokovic’s showman’s spirit for Murray’s
square-lipped self-laceration, but they have their similarities in the
personality department as well. Neither hides his negative feelings or
his vulnerability. Djokovic often seems to have to conquer his inner
pessimist, while Murray appears to be berating an imaginary person in
front of him. (When he laughs sarcastically after a poor shot, it can
look as if he’s reacting to what that person just said back to him.)
Muzz was especially animated on Sunday. Maybe Ivan Lendl’s absence gave
him a chance to let it all out."
"Together they turn the modern men’s game, and its traditional weapons,
inside out. Rather than relying on their serves and forehands, they’re
better known for their returns and backhands. They win not by so much by
attacking, but by playing aggressive defense."
"Djokovic, who is chasing the year-end No. 1 ranking, and has been on a
losing streak against Murray and Federer, did raise his game today. And
he did it in his customary fashion—at the last possible second, and with
a little piece of tension-loosening panache. With Murray serving for
the match at 5-4 in the second set, Djokovic won a point by following up
a tweener with a drop shot winner. As he did in his 2011 U.S. Open win
over Federer, Djokovic threw his hand up to the crowd and smiled,
despite the fact that he was hanging on for dear life. It worked"

Re: The Djokovic Murray Rivalry
Yes the first paragraph is spot on...but we have said that for a while now.
Regarding the BHs, I disagree with him. Murrays BH is strong. Djoko's not so.
Djoko's BH is actually better when he is given a pacy ball like when returning a serve for instance, otherwise I think it's not accurate, pacy and risky enough to do much damage. His slice is also pretty poor.
However on the FH side, Djoko certainly has the advantage.

Re: The Djokovic Murray Rivalry
From what this pair of eyes can see, Murray's only advantage over Nole is his physical strength which fortunately does not translate into stamina, just the pace he injects on his cross-court corner hitting forehand as well backhand.
He has developed them into weapons now.
And because it does not translate into stamina, it means it fizzes out over the course of the match turning Murray's aggressive tactics into his more standard defensive one which I think is easier to handle for Novak.

Re: The Djokovic Murray Rivalry
It will be an interesting rivalry to watch if Murray himself can maintain his form under Lendl.
Djokovic and Murray do match up very well. I still think that Djokovic has the better weapons. He certainly has a better serve, FH and drop shot. Murray has the better BH and slice.

What's the big deal with slice?
What does it actually do for Murray's game?
I reckon it's a waste of time and a breath catcher, nothing more. At best, part of his wind-up counter-punching tactics.

Well that is what it is in a nutshell. He uses the BH slice and Squash shot to great effect. It isn't a match winning shot, but one which is massive in the Murray stategy. Hits a lot when tired and out of position on the court.

It may draw an error from the mortals, but I don't think it's that useful any more, players know it and are prepared for it.legendkillar wrote:noleisthebest wrote:What's the big deal with slice?

Shame he can use it for approach shots

He can. It is strange how Djokovic has a wonderful drop shot that he looks un-orthodox on his BH slice. Murray against the likes of Federer and Djokovic will use it to sustain the longer rally. Nadal just eats them up and makes it ineffective.

Re: The Djokovic Murray Rivalry
I didn't notice Murray using it so much against Federer.
And on balance, it's not that effective against Nole, anyway.

Re: The Djokovic Murray Rivalry
The slice played from the height with a right transition to the net, that is traditional routine in Wimbledon. Slices are the most efficient on the grass, on which is really difficult to time pass shots. I see that was one of the main reasons why Fed steamrolled Murray in last Wimbledon. Fed´s slices are the best in tennis ever, it is really nice shot. If he has a chance to win a GS, then just Wimbledon.
If Nole can get the best from him without his flactuations he should steamroll all oponents. Nowadays exception is Fed on grass and fast surfaces, but Fed´s times are slowly going over. But this matchup is the best in tennis. I would like to watch a couple of their matches, hopefully.

Murray never uses slice to attack, that's the problem.

If Murray goes to the net, it is not that he wants to win the point, but he just forgot where is his baseline

Either that, or he has panic attacks of Apache chasing him on fast horses....

Definitely one of these. We had quite popular steeplechase on last weekend in Czech. I am sure Murray knew that and had been startled by ultra speed horses
He should really take the posters down from the wall...

You need to find from Ivan's eldest daughter what posters Murray's keeping on the wall....

Murray is far superior to Djokovic at the net, that's for sure.paulcz wrote:noleisthebest wrote:Murray never uses slice to attack, that's the problem.
